THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE IS TO MAKE STUDENTS AWARE OF WHAT A LANGUAGE IS, HOW ITS STRUCTURE IS ORGANISED, THE POINTS OF CONTACT AND DIVERGENCE BETWEEN DIFFERENT LANGUAGES GIVING PRIORITY TO THE HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE OF LINGUISTICS AND TO LANGUAGE CHANGE. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING STUDENTS WILL LEARN THE NOTIONS USEFUL FOR ANALYSING AND DESCRIBING LANGUAGES AT DIFFERENT LEVELS (PHONETIC, PHONOLOGICAL, MORPHOLOGICAL, SYNTACTIC, SEMANTIC) AND FOR UNDERSTANDING THE REASONS FOR AND THE DYNAMICS OF LANGUAGE CHANGE. ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING - ABILITY TO IDENTIFY PHENOMENA RELEVANT TO LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS AND DESCRIPTION - ABILITY TO IDENTIFY DISTINCTIVE FEATURES AND COMMON FACTORS AMONG LANGUAGES - ABILITY TO IDENTIFY RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN LANGUAGES AND CULTURES - ABILITY TO IDENTIFY THE FACTORS THAT DETERMINE THE CHANGE AND CONSERVATION OF LANGUAGES AUTONOMY OF JUDGEMENT THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY AND EVALUATE AUTONOMOUSLY - THE THEORETICAL FOUNDATION OF THE PRINCIPLES OF DESCRIPTIVE GRAMMAR - THE CONSTITUTIVE FEATURES OF LANGUAGES COMPARED TO OTHER COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS - THE FACTORS OF CULTURAL IDENTITY CONVEYED THROUGH LANGUAGES. COMMUNICATIVE SKILLS THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO REPRESENT AND COMMUNICATE, BY MEANS OF TEXTS OR COMPUTER TOOLS, THE MAIN RESULTS OF HISTORICAL AND SYNCHRONIC LINGUISTICS. LEARNING SKILLS THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO - IDENTIFY AND USE TRADITIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHICAL TOOLS AS WELL AS LINGUISTIC ELECTRONIC RESOURCES IN VARIED DIGITAL FORMATS; - UPDATE THEIR KNOWLEDGE BY CONSULTING TEXTS DEDICATED TO THE SCIENTIFIC STUDY OF LANGUAGES. |
Prerequisites | |
---|---|
STUDENTS MUST POSSESS THE GRAMMATICAL SKILLS NORMALLY EXPECTED IN BOTH JUNIOR AND SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL CURRICULA, NAMELY, THE ABILITY TO DISTINGUISH THE DIFFERENT LEXICAL CATEGORIES (NOUNS, VERBS, ADJECTIVES, PREPOSITIONS, ETC.), THE DIFFERENT LOGICAL FUNCTIONS (SUBJECT, PREDICATE, ETC.) AND THE ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND AND DESCRIBE THE SYNTACTIC STRUCTURE OF A PERIOD, HIGHLIGHTING ITS CONSTITUENT ELEMENTS. |
Contents | |

THE EXAMINATION AIMS TO ASSESS THE STUDENT'S PREPARATION WITH REGARD TO BOTH THE THEORETICAL PART OF THE SYLLABUS AND THE ABILITY TO APPLY THE ACQUIRED CONCEPTS TO CONCRETE CASES OF LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS. THE VERIFICATION OF THE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS ACQUIRED BY THE STUDENT IS CARRIED OUT BY MEANS OF A WRITTEN TEST CONSISTING OF ABOUT 20 QUESTIONS, TO BE CARRIED OUT OVER A PERIOD OF 2 HOURS. THE QUESTIONS CONTAINED IN THE TASK ARE OF A DIFFERENT NATURE: SOME ARE OPEN, SOME ARE CLOSED, SOME ARE MULTIPLE-CHOICE; SOME ARE THEORETICAL, SOME ARE MORE PRACTICAL IN NATURE. THE LATTER CONSIST OF ACTUAL ANALYSIS EXERCISES (APPLIED TO DIFFERENT LANGUAGES, PARTICULARLY THE CLASSICAL LANGUAGES - LATIN AND GREEK) AIMED AT TESTING THE STUDENT'S ABILITY TO APPLY THE THEORETICAL NOTIONS ACQUIRED. THE QUESTIONS COVER ALL THE TOPICS THAT ARE PART OF THE PROGRAM, BOTH THOSE COVERED IN DEPTH DURING THE LECTURES AND THOSE LEFT TO THE STUDENT'S PERSONAL STUDY AND REFLECTION, I.E.: BASICS OF GENERAL AND HISTORICAL LINGUISTICS, PHONETICS AND PHONOLOGY, MORPHOLOGY AND LEXICON, SYNTAX, SEMANTICS, PRAGMATICS, LINGUISTIC COMPARISON AND RECONSTRUCTION, LINGUISTIC TYPOLOGY, ETC. THE EVALUATION WILL TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE NUMBER OF CORRECT ANSWERS, WHICH ARE GIVEN A VALUE FROM 1 TO 3 POINTS (NO DEDUCTIONS ARE MADE FOR INCORRECT OR UNFULFILLED ANSWERS). IN ADDITION TO SUBSTANTIVE CORRECTNESS, FORMAL ADEQUACY AND EXPRESSIVE CLARITY OF ANSWERS WILL ALSO BE MATTERS OF EVALUATION. THOSE WHO ACHIEVE AN ORGANIC AND COMPLETE VIEW OF THE TOPICS IN THE EXAMINATION PROGRAM, DEMONSTRATING MASTERY OF EXPRESSION AND KNOWLEDGE OF THE SPECIFIC LANGUAGE OF THE SUBJECT, AS WELL AS THE POSSESSION OF ADEQUATE ANALYTICAL SKILLS, WILL THEREFORE OBTAIN MARKS OF EXCELLENCE. A PARTIAL KNOWLEDGE OF THE TOPICS, CORRECT EXPOSITION BUT WITH UNCERTAINTIES IN THE USE OF THE TERMINOLOGY OF REFERENCE, AS WELL AS LESS PRONOUNCED AND PRECISE ANALYTICAL SKILLS, WILL LEAD TO FAIR OR ACCEPTABLE EVALUATIONS. LIMITED KNOWLEDGE OF THE TOPICS ON THE SYLLABUS, A PROPERTY OF LANGUAGE THAT IS NOT ALWAYS ADEQUATE AND POOR PROPENSITY FOR ANALYSIS WILL LEAD TO SUFFICIENT OR SLIGHTLY ABOVE SUFFICIENT EVALUATIONS. MAJOR EDUCATIONAL GAPS IN BOTH THE THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL PARTS AND INADEQUATE LANGUAGE WILL ONLY LEAD TO NEGATIVE EVALUATIONS. |
