Objectives
THE OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE IS TO PROMOTE ADVANCED KNOWLEDGE OF THE TOOLS AND CONCEPTS FUNDAMENTAL TO THE STUDY OF PENSION SYSTEMS.
THE COURSE CONTENT PROVIDES STUDENTS WITH KNOWLEDGE AND ANALYTICAL SKILLS TO GRAPPLE WITH BOTH THEORETICAL AND EMPIRICAL ISSUES NECESSARY TO UNDERSTAND THE DEVELOPMENT, CHANGES, AND REFORMS OF PUBLIC AND PRIVATE PENSION SYSTEMS IN THE CONTEXT OF THE MAJOR WESTERN ADVANCED ECONOMIES.
TO THIS END, THE JOINT STUDY OF THEORETICAL MODELS, THE CONDUCT OF EXERCISES, ATTENDANCE AT EXPERT TEACHING SEMINARS, AND RESEARCH ON SPECIFIC CASE STUDIES ENABLE STUDENTS TO GAIN MASTERY OF THE ISSUES CONSIDERED DURING THE COURSE AND THEIR SUBSEQUENT USE IN THE LABOR MARKET AND/OR IN FURTHERING THEIR STUDIES AND RESEARCH.
Prerequisites
IN ORDER TO TAKE THE COURSE EFFECTIVELY, THE FOLLOWING ARE REQUIRED: A. A GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF THE MAIN MACROECONOMIC MODELS OF GROWTH (SOLOW, RAMSEY, AND OLG), B. FUNDAMENTALS OF MATHEMATICS (TREND AND INTERPRETATION OF ELEMENTARY FUNCTIONS, RULES OF DERIVATION), C. BASIC ELEMENTS OF MICROECONOMICS (CONSTRAINED MAXIMIZATION).
THE COURSE INCLUDES GUIDED SOLVING OF MACROECONOMICS EXERCISES APPLIED TO THE PENSION SECTOR, AS WELL AS GRAPHICAL INTERPRETATION OF THE RESULTS. TEACHING IS GIVEN IN ENGLISH, OF WHICH BASIC KNOWLEDGE IS REQUIRED.

Contents
THE COURSE IS DIVIDED INTO THREE MACRO-MODULES: A. FUNDAMENTALS. THE INTRODUCTORY MODULE DISCUSSES AND INTRODUCES THE MAIN OBJECTIVES, OPERATING MECHANISMS, AND ISSUES CONCERNING PENSION AND INSURANCE SYSTEMS, GIVING A GENERAL OVERVIEW; B. MAINSTREAM ANALYSIS. IN THE SECOND MODULE, THE MAIN TOPICS CONCERNING PENSION SYSTEMS WITHIN AN OVERLAPPING GENERATIONS MODELING FRAMEWORK ARE DISCUSSED. IT WILL LOOK IN PARTICULAR AT THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF PENSION SYSTEMS THAT CAN BE USED (FULLY FUNDED VS. PAY-AS-YOU-GO), HOW THE STATE CAN USE THE PENSION SYSTEM FOR ECONOMIC POLICY PURPOSES, AND WHAT ROLE DEMOGRAPHICS PLAY IN DETERMINING VARIOUS MACROECONOMIC DYNAMICS; C. KEYNESIAN ANALYSIS. THE LAST PART OF THE COURSE IS DEVOTED TO INTRODUCING THE KEYNESIAN APPROACH, AND REINTERPRETING THE TOPICS COVERED WITHIN A THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK IN WHICH AGGREGATE DEMAND PLAYS A KEY ROLE IN DETERMINING GROWTH AND EMPLOYMENT.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE INVOLVES 60 HOURS (10 CFU) OF FACE-TO-FACE TEACHING. WITHIN THE COURSE, THERE ARE AT LEAST 10 HOURS DEVOTED TO EXERCISES IN WHICH THEORETICAL CONTENT IS APPLIED TO PROBLEMS TO BE SOLVED WITH THE GUIDANCE OF THE LECTURER. STUDENTS ARE ALSO ENCOURAGED TO ENGAGE WITH CASE STUDIES PROPOSED BY THE LECTURER, WHICH ALLOW THEM TO APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE GAINED TO THE ANALYSIS OF REAL-WORLD PROBLEMS AND PENSION AND INSURANCE SYSTEMS ACTUALLY AT WORK. TEACHING SEMINARS BY EXPERTS IN THE FIELD ARE PROVIDED.
Verification of learning
STUDENT EVALUATION IS BY WRITTEN TEST AT THE END OF THE COURSE. THE TEST CONSISTS OF THREE PARTS TO BE TAKEN IN 120 MINUTES: A. FORMAL EXERCISE, WHICH AIMS TO TEST THE PREPARATION IN TERMS OF SOLVING AN EXERCISE ALONG THE LINES OF THOSE CARRIED OUT DURING THE EXERCISES; B. GRAPHICAL INTERPRETATION, WHICH ALLOWS THE EVALUATION OF THE ABILITY TO CONSTRUCT AND INTERPRET GRAPHS DESIGNED TO DESCRIBE ANALYTICALLY THE MODELS PRESENTED IN CLASS; C. OPEN QUESTION, DESIGNED TO ALLOW THE STUDENT TO ILLUSTRATE EXTENSIVELY HIS KNOWLEDGE AND CONSIDERATIONS ON SOME OF THE TOPICS COVERED DURING THE COURSE OF THE LECTURES.
