Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH KNOWLEDGE OF THE FUNDAMENTAL ELEMENTS AND METHODOLOGY OF THE PAPYROLOGICAL DISCIPLINE.

ABILITY TO REPRESENT AND COMMUNICATE, BY MEANS OF TEXTS OR VIRTUAL TOOLS, THE RESULTS OF OWN RESEARCH OR ELABORATIONS CARRIED OUT ACCORDING TO CORRECT INVESTIGATION METHODS.

LEARNING ABILITY
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
1. USE TRADITIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHIC TOOLS AND COMPUTER ANALYSIS AND ARCHIVING RESOURCES;
2. CARRY OUT RESEARCH ACTIVITIES, UNDERSTAND AND INTERPRET COMPLEX TEXTS OF A LITERARY OR PARALITERARY TYPE;
3. PROCEED WITH THE CONTINUOUS UPDATING OF THEIR KNOWLEDGE, USING THE SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE AND LITERARY PRODUCTION OF EACH ERA IN A CONTINUOUS INTERACTIVE DIALOGUE.

KNOWLEDGE OF GREEK LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE IS REQUIRED.

WRITING AND READING IN PTOLEMAIC EGYPT ACCORDING TO PAPYROLOGICAL EVIDENCE.
AFTER RECALLING SOME BASILAR KNOWLEDGE ON GREEK LITERARY PAPYRI (PHYSICAL FEATURES OF BOOKROLLS AND EARLY CODICES; PROVENANCES AND CONTEXTS OF LITERARY PAPYRI; MAIN COLLECTIONS; EDITORIAL CONVENTIONS), THE LESSONS WILL SURVEY THE PAPYROLOGICAL EVIDENCE FROM PTOLEMAIC EGYPT, FOCUSING BOTH ON SOME WELL-KNOWN 'ARCHIVES' (AS THE ZENON ARCHIVE) BOTH ON THE LITERARY FINDINGS FROM TOWNS AND VILLAGES EXPLORED BY ARCHAEOLOGISTS DURING THE PREVIOUS DECADES, ESPECIALLY IN THE FAYYUM DISTRICT AND IN THE HERAKLEOPOLITES (AS TEBTYNIS, GUROB, AL-HIBAH...).
THE STUDY OF PAPYROLOGICAL EVIDENCE WILL BE AIMED TO SHOW AN OVERALL PICTURE OF THE DOCUMENTARY PRACTICES, AND OF THE DIFFUSION OF GREEK LITERARY CULTURE IN HELLENISTIC EGYPT,
Teaching Methods
FRONTAL LESSONS, WITH STUDY OF (PRINTED AND DIGITAL) IMAGES OF BOOKS AND DOCUMENTS. REPRODUCTIONS AND TRANSCRIPTIONS WILL BE DISCUSSED IN A COLLECTIVE DIMENSIONS. MOREOVER, THERE WILL BE VISITS TO SOME MAJOR LIBRARIES (AS THE NATIONAL LIBRARY OF NAPLES AND/OR THE BIBLIOTECA MEDICEA LAURENZIANA AT FLORENCE), BUT ONLY AFTER A SURVEY OF THE ACCESSIBILITY OF THE MANUSCRIPTS AND ACCORDING TO THE ACTUAL POSSIBILITIES OF THE STUDENTS TO COME.
Verification of learning
ORAL EXAMS. THE ORAL EXAM IS AIMED TO CHECK THAT THE STUDENTS CORRECTLY UNDERSTAND THE BASILAR PRINCIPLES AND INFORMATIONS GIVEN DURING THE COURSE; MOREOVER, IT WILL ALLOW THE TEACHER TO JUDGE HOW THE STUDENT IS ABLE TO EXPRESS COMPLEX REASONINGS ON THE PAPYROLOGICAL MATERIALS DISCUSSED, THROUGH HER/HIS PREVIOUS HISTORICAL AND PHILOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGES.
THE EXAM USUALLY IS APPROX. 30 MINUTES LONG, AND CONSISTS OF FIVE QUESTIONS: THREE ON THE MANUSCRIPTS EXAMINED DURING THE LESSONS, TWO ON THE GENERAL PRINCIPLES OF THE DISCIPLINE.
STUDENTS WILL BE EXAMINED FOLLOWING THE ORDER OF THEIR INSCRIPTIONS TO THE EXAMS; THE ORDER, ANYWAY, CAN BE CHANGED ACCORDING TO SPECIFIC REQUESTS AND NECESSITIES.
