THE COURSE AIMS TO EXPLORE SOME ASPECTS AND PROBLEMS IN THE HISTORY OF GREEK WRITING, FROM CLASSICAL ANTIQUITY TO HUMANISM KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING SKILLS AT THE END OF THE COURSE, THE STUDENT WILL HAVE WAYS OF: - KNOW THE MAIN SPELLINGS AND HANDS ATTESTED IN BOTH BOOK AND DOCUMENTARY PRODUCTS OF GREEK WRITING OVER THE BYZANTINE MILLENNIUM AND UP TO HUMANISM; - DEVELOP AN ABILITY TO INTERPRET AND CRITICALLY EVALUATE TYPE AND FUNCTION OF BOOK ARTIFACTS FROM THE ERAS EXAMINED. ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED: - TO THE STUDY OF THE MANUSCRIPT TRADITION OF CLASSICAL AND BYZANTINE AUTHORS; - TO THE ANALYSIS OF THE ROLE OF GREEK WRITTEN CULTURE IN LATE ANTIQUE, BYZANTINE AND EARLY MODERN CIVILIZATION; - TO THE FIELD OF CONSERVATION OF THE GREEK MANUSCRIPT HERITAGE; AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO: - EVALUATE THE ROLE OF THE MANUSCRIPT HERITAGE PRESERVED IN LIBRARIES IN THE AREA; - COMPLETE THE COURSEWORK FOR TEACHING CLASSICAL LANGUAGES. COMMUNICATION SKILLS THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO: - EMPLOY A GOOD LEVEL OF TECHNICAL LANGUAGE; - ACQUIRE SKILLS IN FRAMING THE PHENOMENA EXAMINED IN THE HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL CONTEXT OF WHICH THEY ARE AN EXPRESSION. LEARNING SKILLS THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO: - USE TRADITIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHICAL TOOLS AND COMPUTER RESOURCES FOR ANALYSIS AND ARCHIVING, AS WELL AS METATADATA; - CARRY OUT RESEARCH ACTIVITIES, UNDERSTAND AND INTERPRET COMPLEX TEXTS, SCIENTIFIC OR LITERARY; - PROCEED TO THE CONTINUOUS UPDATING OF THEIR KNOWLEDGE, USING TECHNICAL AND SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE. |

THE COURSE WILL BE DIVIDED IN TWO PARTS. STARTING FROM STUDENT’S PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE AND CONSIDERING IT, THE FIRST LESSONS WILL FOCUS ON SOME BASILAR ELEMENTS OF THE DISCIPLINE (PHYSICAL FEATURES OF GREEK BOOKS AND DOCUMENTS; HOW TO DATE MANUSCRIPTS ON PALAEOGRAPHIC GROUNDS; PALAEOGRAPHIC TERMINOLOGY; LIMITS OF EXTANT EVIDENCE), AND, AFTER THAT, TO A SURVEY OF GREEK HANDWRITINGS FROM THE HELLENISTIC PERIOD TO THE 13TH CENTURY. AFTER THIS GENERAL INTRODUCTION, THE LESSONS WILL FOCUS ON THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN PALEOGRAPHY AND TEXTUAL CRITICISM, ACCORDING TO THE PARADIGM OF THE SO-CALLED ‘FILOLOGIA MATERIALE’. A SELECTION OF RELEVANT CASE STUDIES, FROM DIFFERENT PERIODS, WILL BE DISCUSSED WITH THE STUDENTS. |

FRONTAL LESSONS, WITH STUDY OF (PRINTED AND DIGITAL) IMAGES OF BOOKS AND DOCUMENTS. REPRODUCTIONS AND TRANSCRIPTIONS WILL BE DISCUSSED IN A COLLECTIVE DIMENSIONS. MOREOVER, THERE WILL BE VISITS TO SOME MAJOR LIBRARIES (AS THE NATIONAL LIBRARY OF NAPLES AND/OR THE BIBLIOTECA MEDICEA LAURENZIANA AT FLORENCE), BUT ONLY AFTER A SURVEY OF THE ACCESSIBILITY OF THE MANUSCRIPTS AND ACCORDING TO THE ACTUAL POSSIBILITIES OF THE STUDENTS TO COME. |

ORAL EXAMS. THE ORAL EXAM IS AIMED TO CHECK THAT THE STUDENTS CORRECTLY UNDERSTAND THE BASILAR PRINCIPLES AND INFORMATIONS GIVEN DURING THE COURSE; MOREOVER, IT WILL ALLOW THE TEACHER TO JUDGE HOW THE STUDENT IS ABLE TO EXPRESS COMPLEX REASONINGS ON THE PAPYROLOGICAL MATERIALS DISCUSSED, THROUGH HER/HIS PREVIOUS HISTORICAL AND PHILOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGES. THE EXAM USUALLY IS APPROX. 30 MINUTES LONG, AND CONSISTS OF FIVE QUESTIONS: THREE ON THE MANUSCRIPTS EXAMINED DURING THE LESSONS, TWO ON THE GENERAL PRINCIPLES OF THE DISCIPLINE. STUDENTS WILL BE EXAMINED FOLLOWING THE ORDER OF THEIR INSCRIPTIONS TO THE EXAMS; THE ORDER, ANYWAY, CAN BE CHANGED ACCORDING TO SPECIFIC REQUESTS AND NECESSITIES. |
