Objectives
THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE IS TO IMPROVE RUSSIAN LANGUAGE SKILLS ASSOCIATED WITH SOCIAL, TERRITORIAL (DIALECTS) AND ETHNO-NATIONAL VARIETIES (E.G: REGIONAL AND ‘NATIONAL’ VARIETIES OF RUSSIAN TYPICAL OF OTHER COUNTRIES IN THE POST-SOVIET AREA).
SOCIAL AND DIALECTAL VARIETIES OF RUSSIAN WILL ALWAYS BE EXAMINED FROM A BROADER EAST SLAVIC PERSPECTIVE THAT TAKES INTO ACCOUNT THE LINGUISTIC SITUATION IN NEIGHBORING COUNTRIES WHERE RUSSIAN CONTENDS WITH THE LANGUAGES OF THE RESPECTIVE TITULAR NATIONS FOR CERTAIN DOMAINS OF USE (E.G.: UKRAINIAN AND BELARUSIAN).
ON THE SIDELINES WILL WORK ON SOME TRANSLANGUAGING SKILLS WITH EXAMINATION AND TRANSLATION OF TEXTS PERTAINING TO DIFFERENT FUNCTIONAL STYLES.

KNOWLEDGE AND COMPREHENSION SKILLS
THE STUDENT WILL ACQUIRE:
-THE BASIC NOTIONS AND TERMINOLOGY OF SOCIOLINGUISTICS AND DIALECTOLOGY OF THE RUSSIAN LINGUISTIC TRADITION IN ORDER TO COMPARE THEM, AT A LATER STAGE, WITH RELATED ONES OF BELARUSIAN AND UKRAINIAN LINGUISTIC SETTINGS;
-THE DISTINCTIVE FEATURES OF SPOKEN RUSSIAN ALSO IN COMPARISON WITH UKRAINIAN AND BELARUSIAN MIXED-LANGUAGE VARIETIES AS WELL AS SPOKEN AND DIALECTAL ITALIAN;
-THE BASIC FEATURES OF THE MAIN FUNCTIONAL STYLES.

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO
-EXAMINE SOCIO-LINGUISTIC AND DIALECTAL DATA;
-UNDERSTAND AND PRODUCE SPECIALIZED TEXTS OF MEDIUM COMPLEXITY;
-KNOW THE FUNDAMENTALS OF STYLISTICS BOTH IN RELATION TO SOCIOLINGUISTIC REGISTERS AND TO

SOCIAL AND DIALECTAL VARIETIES OF RUSSIAN WILL BE EXAMINED FROM A BROADER EAST SLAVIC PERSPECTIVE THAT TAKES INTO ACCOUNT THE LINGUISTIC SITUATION IN NEIGHBORING COUNTRIES WHERE RUSSIAN COMPETES WITH THE LANGUAGES OF THE RESPECTIVE TITULAR NATIONS FOR CERTAIN DOMAINS OF USE (FOR EXAMPLE: UKRAINE AND BELARUS).

LECTURES AND FRONTAL PRESENTATIONS BUT ALSO STUDENTS' SEMINAR-TYPE PRESENTATIONS WITH CRITICAL DISCUSSIONS.
Verification of learning

FOR ATTENDING STUDENTS, THERE IS ONE OF THE FOLLOWING THREE TESTING OPTIONS (PREVIOUSLY AGREED WITH THE LECTURER):
1. INTERVIEW (ORAL EXAMINATION) ON THE TOPICS OF THE COURSE;
2. WRITTEN PAPER (10-15 PP. + BIBLIOGRAPHY WITH RELEVANT DISCUSSION) ON ONE OF THE TOPICS COVERED IN SOCIOLINGUISTICS AND/OR DIALECTOLOGY OF RUSSIAN AND OTHER EAST SLAVIC LANGUAGES (UKRAINIAN AND BELARUSIAN) AND INTERVIEW ON TWO TOPICS RELATED TO THE COURSE CONTENT;
3.WRITTEN TEST (DURING THE LAST LECTURES), CONSISTING OF A TEST (3 QUESTIONS) WITH RELATED INTERVIEW.
N.B. AT THE TIME OF THE ORAL EXAMINATION, EVALUATIONS OF ANY TERM PAPERS AND/OR TEST WITH WRITTEN QUESTIONS WILL BE CONFIRMED.
FOR NON-ATTENDERS, READING OF SOME PARTS OF THE INDICATED TEXTBOOKS TO BE AGREED WITH THE LECTURER.
