THE MODULE AIMS TO MAKE STUDENTS ACQUIRE CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE OF THE MAIN CLASSICAL AUTHORS AND CONTEMPORARY OF SOCIOLOGICAL THOUGHT AND THEIR INTERPRETIVE APPROACHES AIMED AT EXPLAINING CONTEMPORARY SOCIETIES AND SOCIAL CHANGE. THE MODULE AIMS, IN ADDITION, TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH ANALYTICAL CATEGORIES FOR THE ANALYSIS AND UNDERSTANDING OF SOCIAL PHENOMENA THAT CHARACTERIZE EVERYDAY LIFE. BY THE END OF THE MODULE, STUDENTS WILL HAVE DEVELOPED A BROAD UNDERSTANDING OF THE MAIN SOCIOLOGICAL THEORIES (POSITIVISM, MARXISM, STRUCTURALISM AND POSTSTRUCTURALISM, POSTCOLONIALISM, FEMINISM, ETC.) AND THE CONCEPTS THAT HAVE CHARACTERIZED THE HISTORY OF SOCIOLOGICAL THOUGHT. THE MAIN SOCIOLOGICAL SCHOOLS AND THE HISTORICAL AND SOCIAL CONTEXT IN WHICH THEY DEVELOPED WILL, THEREFORE, BE ADDRESSED, AND HOW THE CONCEPTS THAT HAVE CHARACTERIZED SOCIOLOGY INTERPRET CONTEMPORARY SOCIETIES SKILLS: THE MODULE PROVIDES THE TOOLS TO: - CRITICALLY EXAMINE THE MAIN SOCIOLOGICAL THEORIES FROM THE ORIGINS OF THE DISCIPLINE TO THE PRESENT DAY; - APPLY THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE TO A RANGE OF ISSUES RELATED TO CONTEMPORARY SOCIETIES AND SOCIAL CHANGE; - IDENTIFY THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SOCIAL, POLITICAL AND CULTURAL TRENDS AND PATTERNS IN THE CONTEMPORARY AGE AND THE EMERGENCE OF SOCIOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVES; - DEVELOP ONE'S OWN CRITICAL VIEWPOINT ON SOCIOLOGICAL THEORIES; - DEVELOP ONE'S OWN CRITICAL VIEWPOINT ON SOCIAL PHENOMENA. |

THROUGH THIS TEACHING, MALE AND FEMALE STUDENTS WILL DEVELOP A BROAD UNDERSTANDING OF MAJOR SOCIOLOGICAL THEORIES, FROM THEIR ORIGINS-COMTE, SPENCER, MARX-TO CONTEMPORARY DEVELOPMENTS-GIDDENS, BOURDIEU, FEMINISM. THEY WILL, THEREFORE, ADDRESS THE MAIN SOCIOLOGICAL SCHOOLS AND THE CONTEXT IN WHICH THEY DEVELOPED AND HOW THE CONCEPTS THAT HAVE CHARACTERIZED SOCIOLOGY INTERPRET CONTEMPORARY SOCIETIES. MORE PRECISELY, THE FOLLOWING SCHOLARS AND SOCIOLOGICAL SCHOOLS WILL BE ADDRESSED: POSITIVISM KARL MARX ÉMILE DURKHEIM GEORG SIMMEL MAX WEBER THE ORIGINS OF AMERICAN SOCIOLOGY AND THE CHICAGO SCHOOL SOCIOLOGY IN ITALY IN THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY: PARETO, MOSCOW AND GRAMSCI THE FRANKFURT SCHOOL: HORKEIMER, ADORNO, BENJAMIN AMERICAN SOCIOLOGY IN THE YEARS OF STRUCTURAL-FUNCTIONALISM EVERYDAY LIFE AND THE SOCIAL CONSTRUCTION OF REALITY IN AMERICAN SOCIOLOGY TOWARDS CONTEMPORARY SOCIOLOGY: GIDDENS, BOURDIEU, CULTURAL STUDIES AND POSTCOLONIAL STUDIES |

LECTURES AND SEMINARS. THE TEACHING OF THE HISTORY OF SOCIOLOGICAL THOUGHT INVOLVES A TOTAL OF 60 HOURS OF CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION. PRESENTATION OF THE AUTHORS AND TOPICS COVERED WILL BE FOLLOWED BY STUDENT PRESENTATIONS AND CLASS DISCUSSION. |

AN ORAL EXAMINATION DURING WHICH THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED DURING THE COURSE, THE ABILITY TO CONNECT THEM AND CRITICALLY EVALUATE THEM WILL BE EXPLORED. SPECIFICALLY, THE STUDENT AND FEMALE STUDENTS WHO WISH TO ASPIRE TO THE HIGHEST GRADE WILL NEED TO DEMONSTRATE - HIGH LEVELS OF KNOWLEDGE AND CRITICAL UNDERSTANDING OF THE CONCEPTS AND THEORETICAL PERSPECTIVES WITHIN THE HISTORY OF SOCIOLOGICAL THOUGHT PROPOSED NOT ONLY IN THE LECTURES AND BUT ALSO IN THE REFERENCE TEXTS; - ORIGINALITY OF THINKING ABOUT SOCIOLOGICAL THEORIES - ABILITY TO BUILD CONNECTIONS BETWEEN THE VARIOUS THEORIES AND BETWEEN THEORIES AND THE SOCIO-HISTORICAL CONTEXTS FROM WHICH THEY ORIGINATE - CAPACITY FOR INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT AND A CRITICAL SENSE IN THE USE OF THE CATEGORIES AND THEORETICAL APPROACHES STUDIED; - THE ABILITY TO EMPLOY, COMPARE AND EVALUATE DIFFERENT THEORETICAL APPROACHES AND PLACE THEM WITHIN THE SOCIOLOGICAL DEBATE; - THE ABILITY TO PRESENT THE CATEGORIES AND APPROACHES STUDIED CLEARLY AND WITH AN APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE AND VOCABULARY . |
