SPECIFIC LEARNING OBJECTIVES. THIS MODULE AIMS TO INTRODUCE THE STUDENT TO THE MAIN CONCEPTS AND THEORIES RELATED TO GLOBALIZATION AND THE TRANSFORMATIONS OF INSTITUTIONS, RELATIONSHIPS, EXPERIENCES AND IDENTITIES CAUSED BY GLOBALIZATION IN THE RECENT DECADES AND MORE RECENT DE-GLOBALIZATION PROCESSES. THE AIM IS TO EXPLORE THE NATURE AND DYNAMICS OF THESE TRANSFORMATIONS AND THEIR IMPACT ON CONTEMPORARY SOCIETIES FROM A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE. IN ADDITION TO THE STUDY OF KEY AUTHORS AND THEIR REFLECTION ON THESE ISSUES, SOCIAL INSTITUTIONS SUCH AS IDENTITY, MIGRATION PROCESSES, THE STATE AND POLITICAL INSTITUTIONS, SOCIAL MOVEMENTS AND COLLECTIVE ACTION, RELIGION, AND HOW THEY HAVE CHANGED IN RELATION TO GLOBALIZATION PROCESSES WILL BE INVESTIGATED. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS MODULE IS TO PROVIDE AN UNDERSTANDING OF MAKE STUDENTS AWARE OF THE MAIN THEORIES OF GLOBALIZATION AND THE MANY AND DIVERSIFIED PROCESSES THAT HAVE CHARACTERIZED IT IN ORDER TO HAVE A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE WORLD THEY LIVE IN. IN ADDITION TO A NECESSARY ACQUISITION OF THEORETICAL TOOLS, AN ATTEMPT WILL BE MADE TO UNDERSTAND HOW THE PROCESSES OF GLOBALIZATION TAKE PLACE IN EMPIRICAL REALITY AND THEIR IMPACT ON SOCIAL LIFE. ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING THE MODULE AIMS TO PROVIDE THOSE THEORETICAL, CONCEPTUAL AND METHODOLOGICAL TOOLS NECESSARY TO ELABORATE ANALYSES OF GLOBALIZATION PROCESSES AND CRITICALLY EVALUATE THEIR IMPLICATIONS. STUDENTS WILL THEN BE ABLE TO EVALUATE AND APPLY KEY CONCEPTS, THEORIES, AND DEBATES TO A RANGE OF EMPIRICAL ASPECTS OF CONTEMPORARY SOCIETIES IN AN ERA OF GLOBALIZATION. |

THE MODULE HAS THE OBJECTIVE OF ACQUIRING THE THEORETICAL TOOLS TO ANALYZE THE PROCESSES OF GLOBALIZATION AND DE-GLOBALIZATION THAT HAVE CHARACTERIZED THE PAST DECADES. THUS, THE MODULE WILL APPROACH THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SOCIETY AND GLOBALISATION FROM DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES. THE INTRODUCTORY LECTURES TO THEMES WILL BE FOLLOWED A FIRST PART ON THE TRANSITION FROM THE NATION-STATE TO THE GLOBAL AGE. THE SECOND PART WILL FOCUS ON ECONOMY IN THE ERA OF GLOBALIZATION, NEO-LIBERALISM AND ITS ALTERNATIVES AND DISCONTENTS. THE THIRD PART WILL ANALYSE SOCIAL CHANGE IN THE ERA OF GLOBALIZATION WITH LECTURES ON CULTURE, MEDIA, GLOBAL INEQUALITY, MIGRATION, THE ENVIRONMENT, SOCIAL MOVEMENTS AND OTHER SOCIOLOGICAL ISSUES AFFECTING CONTEMPORARY GLOBAL SOCIETIES. FINALLY, THE MODULE WILL FOCUS ON THE RECENT PROCESSES OF DE-GLOBALIZATION, AS MOVEMENT TOWARDS A LESS CONNECTED WORLD, CHARACTERISED BY POWERFUL NATION STATES, LOCAL SOLUTIONS, AND BORDER CONTROLS, RATHER THAN GLOBAL INSTITUTIONS, TREATIES, AND FREE MOVEMENT. |

LECTURES, TUTORIALS, SEMINARS, SHORT PRESENTATIONS. TEACHING INCLUDES TRADITIONAL TEACHING METHODS SUCH AS LECTURES, WHICH WILL BE SUPPLEMENTED WITH CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES, VIDEO VIEWING AND READINGS OF SHORT TEXTS SO AS TO ENCOURAGE CLASSROOM INTERACTION AND AN ACTIVE LEARNING OF THE LECTURE TOPICS. STUDENTS WILL ALSO BE ASKED TO ORGANIZE SHORT PRESENTATIONS USING POWER POINT AND OTHER INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES. |

ASSESSEMENT ORAL EXAMINATION. VERIFICATION OF LEARNING WILL BE THROUGH ORAL INTERVIEW ON THE TOPICS COVERED DURING THE LECTURES. NOT ONLY KNOWLEDGE OF THE TOPICS COVERED DURING THE COURSE BUT ALSO EXPOSITORY ABILITY, LANGUAGE PROPERTY, AND THE ABILITY TO MAKE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN DEFINITIONS, CONCEPTS AND THEORIES WILL BE ASSESSED. THE GRADE WILL BE HIGHER IF THE STUDENT SHOWS REMARKABLE LANGUAGE PROPERTY AND A SIGNIFICANT CAPACITY FOR INDEPENDENT ELABORATION AND CRITICAL REWORKING OF EXAMINATION TOPICS. |
