Objectives
THROUGH CONTEMPORARY CRIMINOLOGICAL THEORIES AND PERSPECTIVES, THIS MODULE AIMS TO PROVIDE THE TOOLS FOR KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE VARIOUS TYPES OF DIGITAL CRIMES, THEIR IMPACT ON SOCIETY, AND FORMS OF PROTECTION AND SURVEILLANCE.
THE MODULE WILL EXPLORE THE LINK BETWEEN CRIMES ENABLED AND DEPENDENT ON INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY, AS WELL AS THREE TYPES OF DIGITAL CRIMES: PERSONAL DIGITAL CRIMES, POLITICAL DIGITAL CRIMES AND ECONOMIC DIGITAL CRIMES.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
CYBERCRIME IS BECOMING MORE SOPHISTICATED AND WIDESPREAD, AS AN INCREASING NUMBER OF CRIMES ARE COMMITTED ONLINE OR HAVE A LINK TO CYBERSPACE, THE INTERNET, OR SOCIAL MEDIA. THIS TERM REFERS TO A RANGE OF CRIMES RELATED TO THE ABILITY TO USE INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AND MOVE AMONG THE SPACES THAT NEW DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES OFFER.

SKILLS
TEACHING AIMS TO PROVIDE THE SKILLS NECESSARY TO:
- CRITICALLY EXAMINE HOW DEVELOPMENTS IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY CAN CREATE OPPORTUNITIES FOR CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR;
- CRITICALLY APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE GAINED IN THE ANALYSIS OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY-RELATED CRIMES; AND INFORMATION IN ONLINE DISCUSSIONS AND ESSAYS;
- ASSESS THE IMPACT OF CYBERCRIME ON GLOBALIZED SOCIETY;
- IDENTIFY AND ANALYZE THE ELEMENTS OF DIGITAL REALITY THAT CONTRIBUTE TO CHANGES IN THE NATURE OF CRIME, POLICING, AND CYBERSECURITY.

Contents
THE MODULE ADDRESSES SEVERAL TYPES OF CRIME AND DEVIANCE THAT ARE COMMITTED ONLINE OR HAS A CONNECTION TO CYBERSPACE. AMONG THESE WE CAN CONSIDER:
- ECONOMIC AND FINANCIAL CRIME, OFTEN RELATED TO WHITE-COLLAR OR ORGANIZED CRIME, SUCH AS FRAUD AND IDENTITY THEFT, DATA BREACHES, MONEY LAUNDERING THROUGH FINANCIAL MARKETS;
- CRIMES AGAINST THE PERSON SUCH AS SEX CRIMES, ONLINE HATE SPEECH, BULLYING, STALKING AND HARASSMENT, AND THE DARK WEB;
- POLITICAL CYBERCRIME INCLUDING CYBERTERRORISM, HYBRID WARFARE, FAKE NEWS/ DEEP FAKES, AND POLITICAL INTERFERENCE IN ELECTIONS.

THIS MODULE WILL CREATE THE THEORETICAL FOUNDATION FOR UNDERSTANDING THESE DIFFERENT AREAS OF CYBERCRIME THROUGH THE STUDY OF CRIMINOLOGICAL THEORIES IN RELATION TO VARIOUS TYPES OF CYBERCRIMES AND FORMS OF DIGITAL PROTECTION AND SURVEILLANCE.
Teaching Methods
LECTURES AND SEMINARS.
THE MODULE A TOTAL OF 40 HOURS OF IN PERSON TEACHING.
PRESENTATION OF THE AUTHORS AND TOPICS COVERED WILL BE FOLLOWED BY STUDENT PRESENTATIONS AND CLASS DISCUSSION.
Verification of learning
AN ORAL EXAMINATION DURING WHICH THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED DURING THE COURSE, THE ABILITY TO COLLGAMENT AND CRITICALLY EVALUATE IT WILL BE EXPLORED. SPECIFICALLY, THE STUDENT AND FEMALE STUDENTS WHO WISH TO ASPIRE TO THE HIGHEST GRADE WILL NEED TO DEMONSTRATE
- HIGH LEVELS OF KNOWLEDGE AND CRITICAL UNDERSTANDING OF THE CONCEPTS AND THEORETICAL PERSPECTIVES IN THE FIELD OF CRIMINOLOGY PROPOSED NOT ONLY IN THE LECTURES AND BUT ALSO IN THE REFERENCE TEXTS;
- ORIGINALITY OF THOUGHT, OBSERVATION AND INTERPRETATION OF CRIMINAL PHENOMENA; AND
- CAPACITY FOR INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT AND THE CRITICAL SENSE IN THE USE OF CRIMINOLOGICAL CATEGORIES AND APPROACHES STUDIED;
- THE ABILITY TO EMPLOY, COMPARE AND EVALUATE DIFFERENT THEORETICAL APPROACHES;
- THE ABILITY TO PRESENT THE CATEGORIES AND APPROACHES STUDIED CLEARLY AND WITH PROPRIETY OF LANGUAGE.
