THE COURSE AIMS TO TEACH STUDENTS LITERARY CRITICISM AND LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS METHODOLOGIES FROM A COMPARATIVE PERSPECTIVE STUDENTS WILL LEARN ABOUT METHODS OF LITERARY CRITICISM; LEARN ABOUT TECHNIQUES OF LITERARY, METRIC-VERSIFICATION AND LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS; LEARN ABOUT THE HISTORY OF ROMANCE LANGUAGES. WILL LEARN ABOUT THE SOCIO-CULTURAL DYNAMICS THAT INFLUENCE THE DISSEMINATION AND RECEPTION OF LITERARY TEXTS. STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO ANALYSE LINGUISTIC DATA FROM A SYNCHRONIC AND DIACHRONIC PERSPECTIVE; TRANSLATE MEDIEVAL ROMANCE TEXTS USING PHILOLOGICAL TECHNIQUES AND METHODOLOGIES; COMPARE THE PHONETIC AND MORPHOLOGICAL PHENOMENA OF DIFFERENT LANGUAGES IN A COMPARATIVE MANNER; COMPARE AND ANALYSE MEDIEVAL LITERARY TEXTS ON THE BASIS OF THE UNITY OF MEDIEVAL LITERATURE; INDEPENDENTLY TRANSLATE OLD FRENCH, OCCITAN OR CASTILIAN TEXTS; INTERPRET THE SOCIO-CULTURAL DYNAMICS UNDERLYING THE DISSEMINATION AND RECEPTION OF A LITERARY TEXT; COMPARE DIFFERENT VERSIONS OF A LITERARY WORK DIACHRONICALLY. THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO - USE PHILOLOGICAL TOOLS TO FORMULATE HYPOTHESES, RECOGNISE LOGICAL CONNECTIONS, AND ARGUE ABOUT THE CONTENT AND LANGUAGE OF TEXTS; - COMPARING AND EVALUATING DIFFERENT INTERPRETATIONS, DRAWN FROM THE READING OF LITERARY TEXTS, AND DRAWING APPROPRIATE CONCLUSIONS. THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO - EXPRESS LITERARY CONTENT IN A NARRATIVE OR SYNTHETIC MANNER IN A CRITICAL OR TRANSLATED VERSION; STUDENTS WILL HAVE THE METHODOLOGICAL SKILLS FOR LINGUISTIC AND LITERARY ANALYSIS OF TEXTS. |

THE COURSE IS STRUCTURED IN TWO TRACKS: PHILOLOGICAL-LITERARY AND HISTORICAL-LINGUISTIC. THROUGH THE READING, TRANSLATION AND PHILOLOGICAL, LINGUISTIC AND LITERARY COMMENTARY OF SOME PARTICULARLY RELEVANT TEXTS IN THE VARIOUS ROMANCE LANGUAGES, THE AIM IS TO INTRODUCE STUDENTS - TO THE SALIENT PHENOMENA OF THE FORMATION OF THE NEO-LATIN LANGUAGES WITH LINGUISTIC EXERCISES ON THE TEXTS READ AND TRANSLATED IN CLASS TO ILLUSTRATE THE INTERACTION OF THE MAIN LINGUISTIC PHENOMENA IN THE EVOLUTION OF WORDS FROM LATIN TO THE ROMANCE LANGUAGES, FOR A TOTAL OF 30 HOURS INCLUDING EXERCISES: - HISTORICAL INTRODUCTION TO THE BIRTH OF THE ROMANCE LANGUAGES: 6H - ANALYSIS OF THE MAIN PHONETIC PHENOMENA + EXERCISES: 12H -ANALYSIS OF THE MAIN MORPHOLOGICAL PHENOMENA: 8H - LEXICON AND SYNTAX: 4H -ANALYSIS OF THE FIRST VERNACULAR TEXTS AND THE MAIN LITERARY GENRES OF OCCITANIC LITERATURE, THROUGH TRANSLATION INTO ITALIAN AND LITERARY COMMENTARY IN A COMPARATIVE KEY OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT TEXTS OF THIS AREA: - HISTORICAL-LITERARY INTRODUCTION = 6H - INTRODUCTION TO THE EPIC GENRE = 6H - INTRODUCTION TO THE AGIOGRAPHY GENRE = 6H - INTRODUCTION TO THE NOVEL GENRE = 6H - INTRODUCTION TO THE SHORT STORY GENRE = 6H |

THE COURSE TAKES PLACE IN THE FIRST SEMESTER AND COMPRISES THEORETICAL LECTURES AND CLASSROOM EXERCISES. THE EXERCISES IN HISTORICAL LINGUISTICS CONSIST OF: GIVEN THE LATIN ETYMON OF A WORD AND ITS VARIOUS ROMANCES, IDENTIFYING THE LINGUISTIC PHENOMENA THAT DETERMINED ITS EVOLUTION. STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE LECTURES AND EXERCISES WITH THE NECESSARY DILIGENCE AND ATTENTION. THE COURSE PROVIDES TWO SIMILAR BUT DISTINCT SYLLABUSES OF STUDY: FOR FREQUENT AND NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS. A STUDENT CAN BE DEFINED AS AN ATTENDING STUDENT IF HE/SHE ATTENDS AT LEAST 70% OF THE TOTAL NUMBER OF HOURS. |

ACHIEVEMENT OF THE COURSE OBJECTIVES IS CERTIFIED THROUGH THE SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF AN EXAM GRADED ON A THIRTY-POINT SCALE. AT THE END OF THE COURSE, STUDENTS WHO HAVE ATTENDED AT LEAST 70% OF THE CLASSES ARE ELIGIBLE TO TAKE WRITTEN TESTS AS A PARTIAL OR COMPLETE ALTERNATIVE TO THE ORAL EXAM. THESE TESTS, TWO IN TOTAL, EACH CONSIST OF TEN OPEN-ENDED QUESTIONS COVERING DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE SYLLABUS. THE FIRST TEST (2 HOURS), FOCUSED ON LITERARY TOPICS, ALSO INCLUDES BRIEF EXCERPTS FROM THE TEXTS READ IN CLASS, WHICH THE STUDENT IS EXPECTED TO ANALYZE FROM A LITERARY, LINGUISTIC, AND METRICAL PERSPECTIVE. THE SECOND TEST (2 HOURS), FOCUSED EXCLUSIVELY ON LINGUISTIC ASPECTS, INCLUDES THEORETICAL QUESTIONS ON KEY MORPHOLOGICAL CHANGES FROM LATIN TO THE ROMANCE LANGUAGES, AS WELL AS PHONETIC EXERCISES (STARTING FROM THE LATIN ETYMON OF A LEMMA, THE STUDENT MUST EXPLAIN AND COMMENT ON THE PHONETIC PROCESSES THAT HAVE OCCURRED OVER TIME, TRANSFORMING BOTH THE SOUND AND THE SPELLING OF THAT WORD IN DIFFERENT ROMANCE LANGUAGES). EACH WRITTEN TEST WILL BE GRADED ON A 30-POINT SCALE. IF THE AVERAGE SCORE OF THE TWO WRITTEN TESTS IS EQUAL TO OR ABOVE 18/30, THE STUDENT WILL BE EXEMPT FROM THE ORAL EXAM. THE FINAL GRADE WILL BE THE AVERAGE OF THE TWO WRITTEN TEST SCORES. STUDENTS WHO FAIL ONE OR BOTH WRITTEN TESTS, OR WHO ARE NOT SATISFIED WITH THEIR FINAL GRADE, MAY TAKE THE ORAL EXAM. FOR NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS AND ATTENDING STUDENTS WHO DID NOT TAKE THE WRITTEN TESTS OR WHO ARE NOT SATISFIED WITH THEIR RESULTS, THE FINAL EXAM WILL BE ORAL, GRADED ON A 30-POINT SCALE. THE ORAL EXAM INCLUDES THE READING, TRANSLATION, AND LINGUISTIC, METRICAL, AND LITERARY COMMENTARY OF ONE OR MORE PASSAGES ANALYZED IN CLASS AND SELECTED BY THE INSTRUCTOR. THE EXAM WILL BEGIN WITH A TEXTUAL AND LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS OF A PASSAGE, AND THEN EXPAND INTO A COMPARATIVE DISCUSSION, INVOLVING OTHER TEXTS, LITERARY GENRES, AND LINGUISTIC EXPRESSIONS FROM THE SAME HISTORICAL CONTEXT. THE EXAM IS CONSIDERED PASSED IF THE STUDENT DEMONSTRATES AN IN-DEPTH UNDERSTANDING OF THE HISTORICAL-LINGUISTIC AND LITERARY TOPICS COVERED IN THE COURSE SYLLABUS. IN EVALUATING BOTH THE WRITTEN AND/OR ORAL EXAM, THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA WILL BE CONSIDERED: •KNOWLEDGE OF THE SUBJECT MATTER •ABILITY TO SUMMARIZE AND CLARITY OF EXPRESSION •ABILITY TO ANALYZE TEXTS PHILOLOGICALLY, PLACING THEM WITHIN A SPECIFIC HISTORICAL-LINGUISTIC AND LITERARY FRAMEWORK |
