Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO ACHIEVE AT LEAST A B1+ LEVEL OF LINGUISTIC AND COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE ACCORDING TO THE COMMON EUROPEAN FRAMEWORK OF REFERENCE. STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
-UNDERSTAND EVERYDAY EXPRESSIONS AND SEMI-SPECIALISED TERMS RELATED TO SOCIAL SCIENCES;
-GAIN AWARENESS OF APPROACHES AND INSIGHTS RELATED TO INFORMATIVE AND SEMI-SPECIALISED TEXTS;
-COMPREHEND INFORMATIVE AND SEMI-SPECIALISED TEXTS CONCERNING ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LINGUISTICS, AS WELL AS MEDIA AND POLITICAL LANGUAGE;
-APPLY TOOLS OF PRAGMATICS, SOCIOLINGUISTICS, AND DISCOURSE ANALYSIS FOR A CRITICAL APPROACH TO LANGUAGES, THEMES, AND SEMI-SPECIALISED TEXTS, PARTICULARLY IN RELATION TO MEDIA AND POLITICAL LANGUAGE;
-DEMONSTRATE KNOWLEDGE OF THE PHONOLOGICAL, MORPHOLOGICAL, SYNTACTIC, AND SEMANTIC FEATURES OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE;
-USE EVERYDAY EXPRESSIONS AND SEMI-SPECIALISED TERMS RELATED TO SOCIAL SCIENCES WITH EASE. STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO SELECT AND USE RELIABLE SOURCES OF INFORMATION IN ENGLISH AND EVALUATE THE STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES OF THEIR OWN PRODUCTS (WRITTEN AND ORAL). STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO COMMUNICATE IN ENGLISH AT A B1+ LEVEL. STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO ENHANCE THEIR LANGUAGE SKILLS, INCLUDING THROUGH SELF-LEARNING.

THE COURSE WILL COVER THE FOLLOWING TOPICS:
-INTRODUCTION TO LINGUISTICS (2H)
-SEMANTICS AND PRAGMATICS (4H)
-PERSUASIVE COMMUNICATION (4H)
-INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION (4H)
-INTRODUCTION TO DISCOURSE ANALYSIS (6H)

DURING THE COURSE, PARTICULAR ATTENTION WILL BE PAID TO THE LINGUISTIC, TEXTUAL, AND SOCIOCULTURAL ELEMENTS OF SEMI-SPECIALISED COMMUNICATION.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE WILL BE IN ENGLISH AND CONSISTS OF LECTURES AND DEBATES WITH ACTIVE STUDENT PARTICIPATION, AIMED AT PROMOTING THE USE OF ENGLISH AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF CRITICAL ANALYSIS SKILLS. THE COURSE INCLUDES SESSIONS OF COLLECTIVE BRAINSTORMING, AS WELL AS PRACTICAL EXERCISES AND ACTIVITIES, BOTH WRITTEN AND ORAL, BASED ON THE ANALYSIS OF AUTHENTIC TEXTS OF A SEMI-SPECIALISED NATURE. STUDENTS WILL INDEED BE ENCOURAGED TO ANALYSE TEXTS APPLYING THE CONCEPTS LEARNED DURING THE COURSE. ATTENDANCE IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Verification of learning
THE FINAL EXAM CONSISTS OF A WRITTEN AND AN ORAL COMPONENT. THE WRITTEN TEST IS PREPARATORY TO THE ORAL TEST. THE WRITTEN TEST, LASTING ONE HOUR, CONSISTS OF MULTIPLE-CHOICE QUESTIONS, OPEN-ENDED QUESTIONS, AND TEXT COMPLETION AND TRANSFORMATION EXERCISES. THE ORAL TEST, LASTING 15-20 MINUTES, INVOLVES A GENERAL CONVERSATION IN ENGLISH AND A DISCUSSION (ALSO IN ENGLISH) OF THE COURSE CONTENT.
