THE COURSE AIMS TO ACHIEVE LINGUISTIC AND COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE OF AT LEAST LEVEL B1-B2 ACCORDING TO THE COMMON EUROPEAN FRAMEWORK OF REFERENCE. STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO: - UNDERSTAND SPECIALISED TERMS RELATED TO SOCIAL SCIENCES; - GAIN AWARENESS OF APPROACHES AND INSIGHTS INTO INFORMATIVE AND SPECIALISED TEXTS; - COMPREHEND INFORMATIVE AND SPECIALISED TEXTS CONCERNING ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LINGUISTICS, AND MEDIA AND POLITICAL LANGUAGE; - APPLY TOOLS OF PRAGMATICS, SOCIOLINGUISTICS, AND DISCOURSE ANALYSIS FOR A CRITICAL APPROACH TO LANGUAGES, THEMES, AND SPECIALISTED TEXTS, PARTICULARLY IN MEDIA AND POLITICAL LANGUAGE; - DEMONSTRATE A GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF THE PHONOLOGICAL, MORPHOLOGICAL, SYNTACTIC, AND SEMANTIC FEATURES OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE; - USE EVERYDAY EXPRESSIONS AND SPECIALISTED TERMS RELATED TO SOCIAL SCIENCES COMFORTABLY. STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO SELECT AND USE RELIABLE ENGLISH LANGUAGE INFORMATION SOURCES AND EVALUATE THE STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES OF THEIR OWN PRODUCTS (WRITTEN AND ORAL). STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO COMMUNICATE IN ENGLISH AT B1-B2 LEVEL. STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO ENHANCE THEIR LANGUAGE SKILLS, INCLUDING THROUGH SELF-LEARNING. |

THE COURSE WILL FOCUS ON THE FOLLOWING TOPICS: -BASIC CONCEPTS OF LINGUISTICS (2H) -SEMANTICS AND PRAGMATICS (4H) -ELEMENTS OF SEMIOTICS (4H) -MULTIMODALITY (4H) -CRITICAL DISCOURSE ANALYSIS (6H) DURING THE COURSE, PARTICULAR ATTENTION WILL BE GIVEN TO THE LINGUISTIC, TEXTUAL, AND SOCIOCULTURAL ELEMENTS OF SPECIALISED COMMUNICATION. |

THE COURSE WILL BE IN ENGLISH AND WILL CONSIST OF LECTURES AND DEBATES WITH ACTIVE STUDENT PARTICIPATION AIMED AT ENCOURAGING THE USE OF ENGLISH AND THE ABILITY TO CRITICALLY ANALYSE. THERE WILL BE SESSIONS OF COLLECTIVE BRAINSTORMING, AS WELL AS PRACTICAL EXERCISES AND ACTIVITIES, BOTH WRITTEN AND ORAL, BASED ON THE ANALYSIS OF AUTHENTIC TEXTS OF A SPECIALISED NATURE. STUDENTS WILL INDEED BE ENCOURAGED TO ANALYSE TEXTS BY APPLYING THE CONCEPTS LEARNED DURING THE COURSE. ATTENDANCE IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. |

THE FINAL EXAM CONSISTS OF A WRITTEN AND AN ORAL COMPONENT. THE WRITTEN TEST IS PREPARATORY TO THE ORAL TEST. THE WRITTEN TEST, LASTING ONE HOUR, CONSISTS OF MULTIPLE-CHOICE QUESTIONS, OPEN-ENDED QUESTIONS, AND TEXT COMPLETION AND TRANSFORMATION EXERCISES. THE ORAL TEST, LASTING 15-20 MINUTES, INVOLVES A GENERAL CONVERSATION IN ENGLISH AND A DISCUSSION (ALSO IN ENGLISH) OF THE COURSE CONTENT. |
