Objectives
GENERAL OBJECTIVE: THE TEACHING AIMS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH A BASIS FOR CRITICAL UNDERSTANDING OF THE DIFFICULTIES, HISTORICAL AND CURRENT, OF ITALIAN POLITICAL-INSTITUTIONAL LIFE ALONG WITH A COMPARATIVE RANGE OF THE MAIN PUBLIC ORGANIZATIONS OF EUROPE AND THE MAIN COUNTRIES OF THE WESTERN AREA. THE TEACHING EXAMINES: THE HISTORY AND MAIN EVOLUTIONARY STAGES OF EUROPEAN INSTITUTIONS FROM THE MIDDLE AGES TO THE CONTEMPORARY AGE (LAW, MENTALITY, SOCIAL REPRESENTATIONS); ITALIAN DIFFICULTIES IN FULLY ENTERING WESTERN-EUROPEAN MODERNITY (CAUSES, CULTURAL STRUCTURES, SOCIO-ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENTS); THE CONCEPT OF 'INSTITUTION` - DIFFERENCES BETWEEN 'INSTITUTIONS' AND 'INSTITUTES' -; THE DIFFICULTY OF HARMONIZING LEGAL VALUES, ECONOMIC VALUES AND MORAL VALUES IN PERPETUAL METAMORPHOSIS; EFFICIENCY OF THE INSTITUTIONAL APPARATUS (FRENCH MODEL) AND EFFICIENCY OF THE MARKET (ANGLO-SAXON MODEL); CIVILISATION ÉTATIQUE AND ECONOMIC CIVILIZATION AS TWO FACES OF THE WESTERN CIVILIZATION PROCESS; THE DIFFICULTIES OF THE ITALIAN CASE; THE STRUCTURAL DELAYS OF THE ITALIAN MEZZOGIORNO AND THEIR CAUSES.

KNOWLEDGE AND CAPACITY TO UNDERSTAND:
THE MAIN TOPICS THAT STUDENTS WILL KNOW AND UNDERSTAND ARE AS FOLLOWS: THE STATE: AN IDEA, A LOGIC; STATE CIVILIZATION; FROM MAGIC TO THE SOCIAL PACT; THE BIRTH OF THE STATE IN FRANCE, ENGLAND AND FREDERICK II'S KINGDOM OF SICILY; THE SPANISH STATE IN THE KINGDOM OF NAPLES AS AN EXAMPLE OF ANTI-MODERN DEVELOPMENT OF INSTITUTIONS; JURISCONSULTS AND “ARCANA JURIS” IN FRANCE AND THE MEZZOGIORNO; THE AGE OF REVOLUTIONS; INSTITUTIONAL EVOLUTION IN THE MODERN AGE; DEMOCRACY, STATEHOOD AND THE SPIRIT OF INSTITUTIONS.


ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
THE EXPOSITION, READING AND ANALYSIS OF DOCUMENTS PRESENTED DURING THE COURSE WILL ENABLE STUDENTS TO UNDERSTAND THE MAIN HISTORICAL-INSTITUTIONAL PHENOMENA COVERED AND TO OBSERVE CONTEMPORARY EVENTS WITH GREATER CRITICAL AWARENESS.

AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT.
THE FUNDAMENTAL PURPOSE OF TEACHING IS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH THE NECESSARY MEANS TO MATURE ADEQUATE CRITICAL CAPACITY AND AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT REGARDING THE ISSUES ANALYZED AND THE INSTITUTIONAL, POLITICAL, AND CULTURAL PHENOMENA OF CURRENT.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS.
STUDENTS WILL BE EXPECTED TO DEMONSTRATE THE ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE CLEARLY, EFFECTIVELY AND COHERENTLY THE TOPICS OF INSTITUTIONAL HISTORY AND STATE CIVILIZATION STUDIED AND LEARNED IN THE COURSE IN APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE.

LEARNING SKILLS:
STUDENTS' LEARNING SKILLS WILL BE FACILITATED BY THE PROJECTION OF SLIDES AND COMPUTER DOCUMENTS FOR THE PURPOSE OF FIXING ALSO VISUALLY AND WITH GREATER IMMEDIACY THE TOPICS COVERED DURING THE COURSE. ADDITIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHIC TOOLS WILL BE PROVIDED TO STUDENTS FOR MORE CONFIDENT AND USEFUL LEARNING.

FINAL ORAL EXAM. THE TEST VERIFIES THE LEVEL OF UNDERSTANDING OF DISCIPLINE AND THE ABILITY TO ARGUE ABOUT THE DEVELOPMENT OF ANCIENT, MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY CONSTITUTIONALISM.
