COMPANIES TO MAKE DATA-DRIVEN DECISIONS.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING SKILLS:
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO DEVELOP HIS OR HER KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE COURSE TOPICS BY:
- THE STUDY OF BUSINESS PROCESSES FOR COLLECTING DATA AND ANALYZING STRATEGIC INFORMATION
- LEARNING ABOUT INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AIMED AT SUPPORTING THE PROCESSES OF MEASURING, CONTROLLING AND ANALYZING BUSINESS PERFORMANCE

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
THE STUDENT WILL ACQUIRE THE ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING THROUGH THE APPLICATION OF ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE TO TWO CASE STUDIES OF REAL BUSINESSES. THE FIRST CASE IS A MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY AND THE SECOND IS A SOFTWARE COMPANY. ANALYSIS OF THE CASES WILL ENABLE THE STUDENT TO UNDERSTAND COMPANY PERFORMANCE TRENDS, GENERATE FORECAST ESTIMATES, AND HYPOTHESIZE SCENARIOS AND FUTURE BUSINESS STRATEGIES.

THIS IS AN EXAM THAT CONTRIBUTES TO THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE CROSS-CUTTING OBJECTIVES OF CDS.

INDEPENDENCE OF JUDGMENT
The student will be able to:
- coordinate, direct and motivate;
- solve problems and make decisions;
- evaluate the dynamics of formation, operation and sustainable change of the company;
- formulate reports and assessments based on limited or incomplete information

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
The student will be able to:
- communicate using IT tools;
- transmit ideas, problems and solutions;
- communicate with stakeholders.
LEARNING ABILITY
The student will be able to:
- proceed autonomously in updating knowledge;
- evaluate the continuation of one's education in university and non-university settings.
Prerequisites
SKILLS RELATED TO DATABASE FUNDAMENTALS WITH EMPHASIS ON ENTITY/RELATIONSHIP DIAGRAMS, RELATIONAL DATA MODEL AND SQL LANGUAGE ARE REQUIRED.
Contents
THE COURSE IS DIVIDED INTO THREE PARTS 1) DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS; 2) BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE; 3) POWER BI

1. SYSTEMS FOR DATABASE MANAGEMENT (8 HOURS OF FACE-TO-FACE LECTURES).
INFORMATION AND INFORMATION SYSTEMS. SYSTEMS FOR DATABASE MANAGEMENT. DATA WAREHOUSE AND DATA MART, ETL (EXTRACT/TRANSFORM/LOAD) PROCESS, DATA LAKE. GRAPHICAL REPRESENTATION OF DATA.

2.BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE (12 HOURS OF FACE-TO-FACE LECTURES).
DESCRIPTIVE, PRESCRIPTIVE, PREDICTIVE AND DIAGNOSTIC ANALYSIS. DATA MODELING AND TOOLS TO DEFINE BUSINESS LOGIC AND BUSINESS RULES. DIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS OF DATA HYPERCUBES (OLAP). PIVOT TABLE.

3. POWER BI (10 HOURS OF FACE-TO-FACE LECTURES). DATA, MODELS AND VIEWS IN POWER BI. INTRODUCTION TO THE POWER QUERY EDITOR. IMPORT, LINK AND EDIT DATA SOURCES. CREATE MEASURES AND COLUMNS. FILTER DATA, CREATE TABLES AND CHARTS. VISUALIZING DATA WITH POWER BI. CASE STUDIES.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE IS ORGANIZED IN FACE-TO-FACE LECTURES (30 HOURS). SPECIFICALLY, THE FIRST PART OF THE TEACHING WILL PROVIDE THE FUNDAMENTAL CONCEPTS RELATED TO DATA AND ITS ORGANIZATION AND MANAGEMENT, WHICH WILL THEN BE DEVELOPED INTO MULTIDIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS MODELS OF DATA HYPERCUBES. FOR THE BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE AND POWER BI MODULES, FACE-TO-FACE LECTURES ARE PLANNED TO BE FOLLOWED BY INDIVIDUAL STUDY ACTIVITIES (HOMEWORK) IN WHICH DATA MODELS RELATED TO THE CASE STUDIES PRESENTED IN CLASS ARE TO BE FORMALIZED. STUDENTS WILL BE ORGANIZED INTO GROUPS AND EACH GROUP WILL BE ASSIGNED A PROJECT TO BE DEVELOPED DURING THE COURSE.
STUDENT ATTENDANCE IS REQUIRED FOR AT LEAST 70 PERCENT OF THE LECTURES.
Verification of learning
THE EVALUATION WILL BE DONE IN THREE DISTINCT WAYS: PRESENTATION OF THE PROJECT, ORAL TEST AND PRACTICAL TEST. THE STUDENT'S EVALUATION IS SCHEDULED AT THE END OF THE COURSE.

THE PRESENTATION OF THE PROJECT WILL EVALUATE THE RESULT OBTAINED BY A WORKING GROUP STARTING FROM THE CASE STUDY ASSIGNED BY THE TEACHER; EACH PARTICIPANT IN THE WORKING GROUP WILL HAVE TO PRESENT HIS CONTRIBUTION TO THE REALIZATION OF THE PROJECT AND WILL BE EVALUATED WITH RESPECT TO THE QUALITY OF THE RESULTS OBTAINED AND THE ABILITY TO PRESENT THE RESULTS. EACH PARTICIPANT IN THE WORKING GROUP WILL HAVE 5 MINUTES TO BRIEFLY DESCRIBE THEIR CONTRIBUTION.

THE ORAL TEST WILL EVALUATE THE THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO:
- THE ASSIMILATION OF THE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES THAT UNDERLIE INFORMATION SYSTEMS, DATABASES AND BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE
- THE ABILITY TO REPRODUCE AND DISCUSS THE DATA MODELS PRESENTED DURING THE COURSE
- THE DESCRIPTION OF THE DATA MANIPULATION AND MANAGEMENT PROCESSES
- THE ABILITY TO DISCUSS DESCRIPTIVE, PRESCRIPTIVE, PREDICTIVE AND DIAGNOSTIC ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES
THE STUDENT WILL HAVE 20 MINUTES AVAILABLE FOR THE ORAL TEST.

THE PRACTICAL TEST WILL EVALUATE THE STUDENT'S ABILITY TO USE THE POWER BI SOFTWARE TOOL. AN ELEMENT THAT WILL BE CONSIDERED FOR THE PURPOSE OF ACHIEVING THE MAXIMUM SCORE WILL BE THE ABILITY TO PRACTICALLY USE THE METHODOLOGIES ACQUIRED DURING THE THEORETICAL STUDY BY COMBINING THEM WITH THE POWER BI FUNCTIONALITY. FOR THE PRACTICAL TEST, THE STUDENT WILL HAVE 10 MINUTES AVAILABLE.

THE FINAL GRADE ASSIGNED TO THE STUDENT WILL BE THE SUM OF THE SCORES OBTAINED IN EACH INDIVIDUAL TEST:
A) DISCUSSION OF THE PROJECT (MAX 5 POINTS)
B) ORAL TEST (MAX 15 POINTS)
C) PRACTICAL TEST (MAX 10 POINTS)
