Objectives
IN THE FIRST PART THE COURSE INTRODUCES THE STUDENTS TO THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF KINEMATICS AND STATICS OF STRUCTURES COMPOSED OF RIGID BODIES. THE EQUILIBRIUM AND THE ARTICULATION OF SUCH STRUCTURES IS STUDIED. THE SECOND PART IS CONCERNED WITH THE STUDY OF CONTINUOUS 3D SOLIDS. THE CONSTITUTIVE BEHAVIOR OF THE MOST COMMON STRUCTURAL MATERIALS IS EXAMINED. IN PARTICULAR, HOMOGENEOUS ISOTROPIC LINEAR ELASTIC MATERIALS ARE ANALYZED IN DEEP.
THE SKILLS ACQUIRED IN THIS FIRST PHASE OF THE STUDY, ALLOW TO FACE, IN A SECOND PHASE OF THE COURSE, THE STUDY OF ONE-DIMENSIONAL PLANE STRUCTURES: STATICALLY DETERMINATE AND STATICALLY INDETERMINATE. THE ANALYSIS OF STATICALLY INDETERMINATE STRUCTURES IS DEVELOPED BY USING BOTH THE METHOD OF FORCES AND DISPLACEMENTS. IN THIS CONTEXT, THE STUDENT ACQUIRES THE SKILLS RELATED TO THE DETERMINATION OF CONSTRAIN REACTIONS, AS WELL AS TO THE EVALUATION OF THE STATE OF STRESS AND DEFORMATION IN LINERA ELASTIC STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS. FINALLY, THE COURSE PROVIDES THE ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE FOR THE VERIFICATION OF THE STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS WITH RESPEC TO THE ULTIMATE LIMITE STATES. IN PARTICULAR, THE ELASTIC BUCKLING OF AXIALLY LOADED BEAMS IS INVESTIGATED.

THE SUCCESSFUL ACHIEVEMENT OF THE OBJECTIVES ABOVE REQUIRES BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF MATHEMATICS AND PHYSICS, RATIONAL MECHANICS: STATICS AND DYNAMICS.

ELASTIC SOLIDS: ANALYSIS OF STRAIN, ANALYSIS OF STRESS (MOHR CIRCLE), CONSTITUTIVE LAWS, ISOTROPIC LINEAR ELASTIC MATERIAL, BOUNDARY VALUE PROBLEM FOR LINEAR ELASTIC BODIES. STATICALLY DETERMINATE BEAM SYSTEMS. TECHNICAL THEORY OF BEAMS: DEFORMATION OF ELASTIC BEAM STRUCTURES. STATICALLY INDETERMINATE BEAM SYSTEMS: METHODS OF FORCES AND DISPLACEMENTS. LOCAL STRESSES IN BEAMS: CENTERED AXIAL FORCE, FLEXURE, ECCENTRIC AXIAL FORCE AND BIAXAL FLEXURE, TORSION, SHEAR. INSTABILITY OF ELASTIC EQUILIBRIUM. SAFETY ASSESSMENT.

Verification of learning
THE FINAL EXAM CONSISTS IN A WRITTEN TEST AND IN A ORAL EXAM. IN THE ORAL TEST THE STUDENT IS REQUIRED TO SOLVE EXERCICES THAT ARE SIMPLE APPLICATIONS OF THE THEORY.
