Objectives
THE TEACHING OBJECTIVES ALIGN WITH THE OVERALL FRAMEWORK OF THE THREE-YEAR DEGREE PROGRAM IN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE, WHICH AIMS TO TRAIN PROFESSIONALS CAPABLE OF WORKING IN THE FIELDS OF MONITORING, ASSESSMENT, AND MANAGEMENT OF NATURAL AND ANTHROPOGENIC HAZARDS, AS WELL AS LAND MANAGEMENT.
THE TEACHING IS PRIMARILY FOCUSED ON ACQUIRING THE COGNITIVE TOOLS OF ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY FOR IDENTIFYING THE MAIN POLLUTANTS IN NATURAL AND ANTHROPIZED ENVIRONMENTS. THE GOAL OF THIS TEACHING IS TO TRAIN PROFESSIONALS WHO CAN IDENTIFY AND ASSESS POLLUTANTS IN WATER, AIR, AND SOILS, AND USE ANALYTICAL TOOLS IN ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYSIS OR QUALITY CONTROL LABORATORIES.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING (DUBLIN DESCRIPTOR NR.1)
TEACHING AIMS TO EMPOWER STUDENTS TO ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGE OF THE BASIC CONCEPTS OF CLASSICAL AND INSTRUMENTAL ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY, WITH THE SUPPORT OF ADVANCED TEXTBOOKS. THE GOAL IS ALSO TO EQUIP STUDENTS WITH THE SKILLS TO DEVELOP AND APPLY INNOVATIVE IDEAS, POTENTIALLY IN RESEARCH AREAS, FOR CONDUCTING PROPER CHEMICAL ANALYSIS USING CLASSICAL, SPECTROSCOPIC, AND CHROMATOGRAPHIC METHODS TO DETERMINE CHEMICAL COMPOUNDS QUALITATIVELY AND QUANTITATIVELY IN ENVIRONMENTAL SAMPLES. ADDITIONALLY, THE TEACHING AIMS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH KNOWLEDGE NECESSARY FOR UNDERSTANDING AND ADDRESSING CUTTING-EDGE ISSUES IN THE FIELD:
- OF THE MAIN SAMPLING TECHNIQUES AND ASSOCIATED ERRORS;
- OF THE OPERATION OF THE MAIN ENVIRONMENTAL LABORATORY INSTRUMENTATION.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING (DUBLIN DESCRIPTOR NR. 2)
THE AIM OF THE TEACHING IS TO ENABLE STUDENTS TO DEVISE AND SUPPORT ARGUMENTS THAT ADDRESS ISSUES RELATED TO CHEMICAL ANALYSIS IN THE ENVIRONMENTAL FIELD, INCLUDING:
- SETTING UP LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS CORRECTLY;
- USING INSTRUMENTATION CORRECTLY.
THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED WILL ENABLE STUDENTS TO SOLVE PROBLEMS IN NEW AND INTERDISCIPLINARY AREAS, SUCH AS:
- PERFORMING QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE INSTRUMENTAL ANALYSES ON VARIOUS ENVIRONMENTAL SAMPLES;
- EVALUATING THE DATA OBTAINED DURING EXPERIMENTS TO ENSURE THE QUALITY OF THE ANALYTICAL RESULTS.

MAKING JUDGEMENTS (DUBLIN DESCRIPTOR NR. 3)
TEACHING AIMS TO EMPOWER STUDENTS TO AUTONOMOUSLY INTERPRET AND EVALUATE EXPERIMENTAL DATA OBTAINED DURING EXERCISES. SPECIFICALLY, STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO INTEGRATE THEIR KNOWLEDGE INDEPENDENTLY IN ORDER TO EFFECTIVELY ADDRESS THE COMPLEXITY OF ISSUES RELATED TO ENVIRONMENTAL CHEMICAL ANALYSIS AND DATA COLLECTION. THEY WILL BE ABLE TO MAKE INFORMED JUDGMENTS, EVEN WITH INCOMPLETE DATA, AND REFLECT CRITICALLY ON SCIENTIFIC MATTERS RELEVANT TO ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS (DUBLIN DESCRIPTOR NR. 4)
TEACHING WILL ENABLE THE STUDENT TO COMMUNICATE CONCEPTS AND CONCLUSIONS, AS WELL AS THE RATIONALE BEHIND THEM, TO SPECIALIST AND NON-SPECIALIST INTERLOCUTORS, RESULTING FROM THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED REGARDING CHEMICAL ANALYSES ON ENVIRONMENTAL MATRICES.

LEARNING SKILLS (DUBLIN DESCRIPTOR NR. 5)
TEACHING WILL PROVIDE THE STUDENT WITH THE SKILLS NECESSARY FOR SELF-DIRECTED AND AUTONOMOUS STUDY, ENABLING THEM TO FIND INDIVIDUAL PATHS TO ADDRESS THE COMPLEX AND MULTIDISCIPLINARY PROBLEMS OF ANALYSIS ON ENVIRONMENTAL MATRICES AND TO DEVELOP THOSE LEARNING SKILLS THAT ARE NECESSARY FOR THEM TO UNDERTAKE SUBSEQUENT STUDIES WITH A HIGH DEGREE OF AUTONOMY.
Prerequisites
GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF INORGANIC, ORGANIC.
Contents
THE TEACHING IS DIVIDED INTO TWO MODULES: A MODULE (ANALYTICAL ENVIRONMENTAL CHEMISTRY) OF THEORETICAL CHARACTER (6 CFU, 48 HOURS) AND A MODULE (LABORATORY OF ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY) OF APPLICATION CHARACTER (6 CFU, 60 HOURS).
IN THE THEORETICAL MODULE THE BASICS OF ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY ARE DEALED WITH, STARTING FROM THE CONCEPTS OF MASS AND VOLUME AND ARRIVING UP TO THE DESCRIPTION OF THE MOST COMMON ANALYTICAL INSTRUMENTS. IN PARTICULAR, THE MODULE WILL BE STRUCTURED AS FOLLOWS:
- CHEMICAL PHYSICAL BASIS (1 CFU, 8 HOURS): UNITS OF MEASUREMENT AND VALUES IN ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY, SIGNIFICANT FIGURES AND MEASUREMENT ERRORS, CONCEPTS OF MASS, VOLUME, MOLE, CONCENTRATIONS, ETC.
- CLASSICAL ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY (2 CFU, 16 HOURS): CHEMICAL ACTIVITY AND CHEMICAL BALANCE, SOLUBILITY AND GRAVIMETRIC ANALYSIS, ACID-BASE TITRATIONS, REDOX TITRATIONS, COMPLEXIMETRIC TITRATIONS, ELECTROCHEMICAL ANALYSIS.
- INSTRUMENTAL ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY (2 CFU, 24 HOURS): CONDUCTIVITY, POTENTIOMETRY, INTRODUCTION TO SPECTROSCOPY, ATOMIC ABSORPTION, UV-VIS SPECTROPHOTOMETRY. INTRODUCTION TO CHROMATOGRAPHIC SEPARATIONS, LIQUID COLUMN CHROMATOGRAPHY AND GAS CHROMATOGRAPHY.
- APPLICATIONS IN THE ENVIRONMENTAL FIELD (1 CFU, 8 HOURS): CHARACTERIZATION AND SELECTION OF ANALYTICAL METHODS, ANALYSIS OF ENVIRONMENTAL MATRICS, ANALYSIS OF THE MOST COMMON ENVIRONMENTAL CONTAMINANTS.
IN THE LABORATORY MODULE EXERCISES WILL BE DONE IN THE CLASSROOM AND IN THE LABORATORY TO ILLUSTRATE THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE CONCEPTS LEARNED IN THE THEORETICAL MODULE. IN PARTICULAR, THE MODULE WILL BE STRUCTURED AS FOLLOWS:
- CLASSROOM EXERCISES (3 CFU, 24 HOURS): ADVANCED STECHIOMETRY, BALANCING OF REDOX REACTIONS, ACID-BASE REACTIONS, MULTIPLE BALANCES IN SOLUTION.
- LABORATORY EXERCISES (3 CFU, 36 HOURS): 8 EXERCISES OF 4 HOURS EACH WITH RELATIVE THEORETICAL EXPLANATIONS IN THE CLASSROOM (2 HOURS): EXERCISES WITH MICROSOFT EXCEL® CALCULATION SHEET, CALCULATION OF A VOLUMETRIC DEVICE, DETERMINATION ACID-BASE WITH INDICATOR (PREPARATION AND STANDARDIZATION OF A NAOH SOLUTION), COMPLEXOMETRIC TITRATION WITH INDICATOR (PREPARATION AND STANDARDIZATION OF AN EDTA SOLUTION - DETERMINATION OF THE HARDNESS OF A WATER SAMPLE), CONDUCTIMETRIC CONDUCTIVITY ANALYSIS (MEASUREMENT OF THE SAMPLES '' WATER, DETERMINATION OF THE CONCENTRATION OF BICARBONATES IN A WATER SAMPLE), POTENTIOMETRIC ANALYSIS (PH MEASUREMENT OF WATER SAMPLES - DETERMINATION OF THE ACIDITY OF A COMMERCIAL VINEGAR THROUGH POTENTIOMETRIC TITRATION / VISPETROMETRIC VISUALIZATION ANALYSIS) OF WASTE WATER - DETERMINATION OF ORTHOPHOSPHATES IN WATER SAMPLES), SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC ANALYSIS HE OF ATOMIC ABSORPTION (DETERMINATION OF METALS IN A SOIL SAMPLE), CHROMATOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS (DETERMINATION OF ANIONS IN A WATER SAMPLE OF A RIVER).
