The teaching's basic aim is to offer advanced knowledges on the topics and methods of contemporary philosophy to students which will teach philosophy or will develop research careers in human sciences. Knowledge and ability of understanding: This teaching furnishes clear and analytical knowledges on philosophy as a specific kind of knowledge invented in the Western world, with particular reference to its contemporary evolution. Ability to apply knowledge and undestanding: The second aim - directly connected to the first one - is to furnish a "know-how" and the connected "skills" which can help her/him in a career of teacher. In particular, it will be discussed and experimented how a "didactics" of philosophy can be made and how it can include even contemporary philosophy. Autonomy of judgment: This aim is also connected to the larger goal - regarding the overall formation of single students - of helping students to acquire critical awareness and ability to question the characteristic phenomena of our historical world and the overall views of our times; and furthermore ability to reflect with autonomy of thought, stimulating in her/him also some degree of speculative inventiveness. |
Prerequisites | |
---|---|
A good knowledge of the history of philosophy from Plato onwards, including even the fundamental movements of the XIXth and XXth Century is useful for a full understanding of the contents of this teaching. |
Contents | |
---|---|
The general topic of the lectures is the following: French Theory, Italian Thought: two paradigms of contemporary philosophical thought. Lectures will be divided into three phases: a) in the first phase - the first four weeks - a short sketch of 'history of philosophy' will be proposed, starting from Plato, focusing what kind of "vision of the real" prevailed in the different periods of the history of philosophy and - with a more particular attention - the developments of this issue since Nietzsche to the actual debates. b) in the second phase - the following four weeks - the contemporary French philosophy will be discussed detailedly, through three of its 'key' exponents: Merleau-Ponty, Foucault and Derrida; c) in the third phase - the last four weeks - the contemporary Italian philosophy will be discussed and analysed through two of its main exponents: R. Esposito and G. Agamben. This last part will approach more closely the actual scenario of the philosophical debates, in order to give students an acquaintance of the newest developments in this area of thought (mostly wholly neglected by the scholastic programs). |
Teaching Methods | |
---|---|
Some of the lectures will be centered on the analytical reading of parts of philosophical works, other lectures will discuss their topics inviting students to propose comments and critical insights. Furthermore, beyond the lectures, the teaching will include also: (a) A lectio magistralis held by two contemporary philosophers who will be invited; (b) a particular lecture on the topics concerning "Didactics of Philosophy" held by an invited expert professor. Students who cannot follow the lectures and the other moments of the program have to acquire independently the connected knowledges and competences, through the full reading of the book: L. Vanzago, Merleau-Ponty (Carocci, Rome), on which each non attending student has to compose a written report of no less than 5 pages (and from which the oral proof will be introduced: see the next entry). |
Verification of learning | |
---|---|
Oral proof. Students can agree with the teacher if they want to undergo during the course some progressive verification questions (useful to lighten the study load for the final exam). The final oral proof consists of a discussion of the duration, depending on the case (= greater or lesser preparation of the student), of 15/20 minutes. It takes place in two stages. The first question will always focus on a topic chosen by the student - in order to verify his degree, as well as preparation, maturity and autonomy in the ability to choose and adequately argue, with logical-deductive skills, the theme that has the most interested. The following questions will be aimed at ascertaining a) the level of knowledge reached of the theoretical contents; b) the ability to use the contents learned in the future profession. For those not attending, the test is opened by the verification of the tasks foreseen for the recovery of the skills developed in the class by the attending students. |
