1. MASTERY OF WRITTEN AND ORAL ITALIAN (ABILITY TO READ AND UNDERSTAND WRITTEN TEXTS, TO LISTEN AND UNDERSTAND ORAL SPEECHES, TO EXTEMPORISE SUMMARIES OF THEM WITH ADEQUATE LANGUAGE SKILLS, ORALLY AND/OR IN WRITING; ABILITY TO PRODUCE, WITH ADEQUATE LANGUAGE SKILLS, WRITTEN AND ORAL REPORTS ON SPECIFIC TOPICS); 2. 1. DEVELOPMENT AND IMPROVEMENT OF THE PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE OF ANCIENT GREEK LANGUAGE: VOCABULARY, MORPHOLOGY, SYNTAX, METRE (SEE REFERENCE TEXTS, 1.); 2. READING IN THE ORIGINAL LANGUAGE, INTERPRETATION/TRANSLATION INTO ITALIAN, EXEGETICAL AND HISTORICAL-LITERARY COMMENTARY OF THE FOLLOWING TEXTS: A) ARISTOPHANES, ACHARNENSES (SEE REFERENCE TEXTS, 2.); B) A SIGNIFICANT SELECTION OF TEXTS FROM ARCHAIC GREEK POETRY (SEE REFERENCE TEXTS, 3.); C) LUCIAN, MENIPPUS (SEE REFERENCE TEXTS, 4.). N. B. FOR POETIC TEXTS, RHYTHMICAL READING IS REQUIRED; 3. HISTORY OF GREEK LITERATURE IV CENT. B. C.-VI CENT. AD (SEE REFERENCE TEXTS, 5.).
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE IS DIVIDED INTO 15 LECTURES OF 2 HOURS EACH (30 HOURS IN TOTAL); THE LECTURES WILL BE DEVOTED TO READING IN THE ORIGINAL LANGUAGE, TRANSLATION INTO ITALIAN, TEXTUAL AND LITERARY ANALYSIS, EXEGETICAL AND HISTORICAL-LITERARY COMMENTARY OF THE TEXTS INCLUDED IN THE PROGRAMME (SEE “CONTENUTI DEL CORSO, 3.”). DURING THE LECTURES, STUDENTS WILL BE REQUESTED TO TAKE PART IN DISCUSSIONS ON TEXTS AND TEXTUAL PROBLEMS. ATTENDANCE AT THESE LECTURES, THOUGH HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, IS NOT COMPULSORY. THOSE STUDENTS WHO DECIDE NOT TO ATTEND THE LECTURES MUST ANYWAY STUDY THE CONTENTS OF THEM, AS WELL AS THE REFERENCE TEXTS. THE LECTURES WILL BE DELIVERED IN ITALIAN; DURING THEM NUMEROUS TEXTS IN ANCIENT GREEK (AND, ON OCCASION, IN LATIN) WILL BE READ, TRANSLATED INTO ITALIAN AND COMMENTED ON. THE ANALYSIS AND EXPLANATION OF THE METRIC STRUCTURE WILL BE AN INTEGRAL - AND INDISPENSABLE - PART OF THE READING AND INTERPRETATION OF THE POETIC TEXTS. CLARIFICATIONS AND EXPLANATION COULD BE GIVEN, ON REQUEST OF THE STUDENTS, AT THE END OF THE LECTURES; STUDENTS COULD ALSO CONTACT THE PROFESSOR VIA EMAIL: A.MERIANI@UNISA.IT.
Verification of learning
IN ORDER TO CERTIFY THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE TEACHING OBJECTIVES, IT IS REQUIRED TO PASS AN EXAM, WHICH WILL CONSIST IN A DISCUSSION OF ABOUT 30 MINUTES ON THE CONTENTS OF THE COURSE AND ON THE ADOPTED TEXTS (SEE THE SECTION “TESTI ADOTTATI”). METRICAL READING OF THE POETIC TEXTS IS MANDATORY. GRADES ARE EXPRESSED ON A SCALE OF 30: THE MINIMUM SCORE TO PASS THE EXAM IS 18/30. THE DISCUSSION WILL START WITH A TOPIC PROPOSED BY THE CANDIDATE. DURING THE EXAM, THE FOLLOWING WILL BE EVALUATED: 1. CORRECTNESS AND ACCURACY OF INFORMATION; 2. ABILITY TO ANSWER QUESTIONS PERTINENTLY AND ACCURATELY; 3. ABILITY TO RELATE CLEARLY, SHOWING ACCURACY AND ADEQUATE LANGUAGE SKILLS; 4. ABILITY TO ARTICULATE COMPLEX DISCUSSIONS COHERENTLY; 5. ABILITY TO PLACE THE HISTORICAL-LITERARY PHENOMENA IN WIDER HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL CONTEXTS; 6. ABILITY TO SYNTESISE. STUDENTS WHO WON’T HAVE DEMONSTRATED AN ADEQUATE KNOWLEDGE OF THE TOPICS ADDRESSED DURING THE COURSE, WITH REFERENCE TO THE PARAMETERS LISTED ABOVE, WON’T PASS THE EXAM. THOSE WHO WILL HAVE DEMONSTRATED SUCH A KNOWLEDGE, WILL BE AWARDED WITH GRADES FROM 18/30 TO 30/30 CUM LAUDE, DEPENDING ON THE LEVEL OF UNDERSTANDING OF THE TOPICS AND OF PERSONAL CRITICAL DEVELOPMENT; THE ‘CUM LAUDE’ GRADE WILL BE AWARDED TO THOSE WHO WILL HAVE DEMONSTRATED EXCELLENT MASTERY AND GIVEN PERSONAL CONTRIBUTION TO THE TOPICS.
