Objectives
THE TEACHING, MADE OF THEORETICAL LECTURES AND LABORATORY EXERCITATIONS, IS A COMPLETION OF THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF INORGANIC CHEMISTRY.

THE MAIN ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE WILL BE:
• FUNDAMENTAL PROPERTIES OF TRANSITION ELEMENTS
• STRUCTURE, BONDING THEORY AND FEATURES OF MAIN CLASSES OF COORDINATION AND ORGANOMETALLIC COMPOUNDS.

THE MAIN ACQUIRED CAPABILITIES WILL BE:
• TO APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE OF INORGANIC CHEMISTRY TO SOLVE PRACTICAL PROBLEMS
• TO OPERATE SYNTHETIC AND ANALYTICAL WORK IN THE LABORATORY.
Prerequisites
THE STUDENT MUST HAVE PASSED THE EXAMS OF GENERAL AND INORGANIC CHEMISTRY AND OF INORGANIC CHEMISTRY 1.
Contents
WERNER COMPLEXES. COORDINATION NUMBER AND GEOMETRY. VALENCE BOND THEORY. CRYSTAL FIELD THEORY. MOLECULAR ORBITAL THEORY. CLASSICAL LIGANDS, -BASIC AND -ACID LIGANDS. ORGANOMETALLIC COMPOUNDS. EXAMPLES OF HOMOGENEOUS CATALYSTS.

GENERAL PROPERTIES OF THE TRANSITION ELEMENTS. MAIN COMPOUNDS AND COMPLEXES OF ELEMENTS OF THE FIRST ROW.

LABORATORY: SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF COORDINATION COMPOUNDS.
Teaching Methods
THE TEACHING INCLUDES LECTURES (40 HOURS) AND LABORATORY PRACTICE (12 HOURS). FOR THE LATTER PART, 75% ATTENDANCE IS COMPULSORY. AT THE END OF THE LABORATORY PRACTICE, THE STUDENT HAS TO PROVIDE A SCIENTIFIC REPORT ON THE SYNTHESES PERFORMED IN THE LABORATORY BEFORE ATTENDING THE EXAM.
Verification of learning
ORAL EXAM, INCLUDING A DISCUSSION OF THE LABORATORY REPORTS.
Texts
HUEHEY, KEITER, KEITER; CHIMICA INORGANICA, ED. PICCIN.
COTTON, WILKINSON; CHIMICA INORGANICA, ED. AMBROSIANA.
