THE COURSE AIMS TO DEEPEN BOTH THE THEORETICAL CONCEPTS AND EMPIRICAL METHODS THAT CHARACTERIZE THE DISCIPLINE IN ORDER TO DEVELOP IN STUDENTS THE ABILITY TO ANALYZE AND CRITICALLY INTERPRET THE DIFFERENT CONFIGURATIONS OF "TERRITORIALITY" IN A GLOBALIZED WORLD. PARTICULAR ATTENTION WILL BE PAID TO THE ROLE OF MAPPING SOCIO ECONOMIC PHENOMENA. EXTENSIVE USE OF CASE STUDIES WILL BE MADE TO HIGHLIGHT THE SPECIFIC CONTRIBUTION THAT GEOGRAPHY CAN OFFER TO THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE TERRITORIES AND IN THE PERSPECTIVE OF ELABORATING PLACE-BASED INTERVENTION POLICIES. AT THE END OF THE COURSE THE STUDENT WILL HAVE TO POSSESS THEORETICAL AND OPERATIONAL KNOWLEDGES, TO BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND AND TO INTERPRET CRITICALLY THE PRINCIPLES, THE LOGIC AND THE EVOLUTIONARY DYNAMICS THAT CONCERN THE ORGANIZATION OF THE TERRITORY AT DIFFERENT GEOGRAPHICAL SCALES, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LOCAL AND GLOBAL LEVEL. IN PARTICULAR THE STUDENT MUST HAVE A GOOD ABILITY TO: -GATHER, INTERPRET AND USE STATISTICAL INFORMATION, PAPERS AND DOCUMENTS FROM DIFFERENT SOURCES; -BECOME FAMILIAR WITH TERRITORIAL DATABASES AND MAPPING METHODS; -READ AND PRODUCE THEMATIC MAPS TO REPRESENT ASPECTS OF SETTLEMENTS, ENVIRONMENTAL, HISTORICAL, CULTURAL, POLITICAL, ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL OF THE TERRITORY; -ELABORATE REPORTS ON DIFFERENT ISSUES AT DIFFERENT GEOGRAPHICAL SCALES, IN AN INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACH. |
Prerequisites | |

Teaching Methods | |
---|---|
THE COURSE CONSISTS OF LECTURES (TWO-THIRDS) AND GROUP ACTIVITIES IN THE LABORATORY (ONE-THIRD) RELATED TO SPECIFIC TOPICS OR CASE STUDIES SELECTED FROM THE CONTENT ABOVE. DUE TO THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE COURSE, CLASS ATTENDANCE, ALTHOUGH NOT MANDATORY, IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. HOWEVER, STUDENTS WHO DECIDE NOT TO ATTEND THE COURSE CAN PREPARE THE EXAM ON THE TEXTBOOK SPECIFICALLY INDICATED FOR NOT ATTENDING STUDENT. |
Verification of learning | |
---|---|
THE EXAMINATION WILL CONSIST IN AN ORAL INTERVIEW AIMED AT VERIFYING THE THEORETICAL AND OPERATIONAL SKILLS ACQUIRED BY THE STUDENT. ATTENDING STUDENTS WILL ALSO BE REQUIRED TO PRESENT AND DISCUSS A PROJECT WORK, DIRECTED TO DEEPEN A TOPIC OR A CASE STUDY (TO BE AGREED WITH THE TEACHER). |
