Objectives | |

THE AIM OF THE COURSE IS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH A BASIC UNDERSTANDING OF THE PHYSICS OF SYSTEMS FOR WHICH A DESCRIPTION IN TERMS OF BAND THEORY ALONE PROVES TO BE INADEQUATE. PARTICULAR ATTENTION IS GIVEN TO SYSTEMS WITH LATTICE DISTORTIONS AND STRONG ELECTRONIC CORRELATIONS, SPECIFICALLY TRANSITION METAL AND RARE-EARTH COMPOUNDS, WHICH EXHIBIT PECULIAR PHENOMENA SUCH AS, FOR INSTANCE, THE PEIERLS INSTABILITY AND THE MOTT-HUBBARD TRANSITION. A REVIEW OF THE THEORETICAL MODELS USED FOR THEIR ANALYSIS (SU-SCHRIEFFER-HEEGER MODEL, HUBBARD MODEL, T-J MODEL, ANDERSON MODEL) WILL ALSO BE PRESENTED. |
Prerequisites | |
---|---|
EXTENSIVE KNOWLEDGE OF QUANTUM MECHANICS, SOLID STATE PHYSICS, SECOND QUANTIZATION AND GREEN'S FUNCTIONS, AS ACQUIRED IN THE WHOLE 3+2-YEAR COURSE OF STUDY IN PHYSICS. |
Contents | |
---|---|
INADEQUACY OF BAND THEORY FOR SYSTEMS WITH LATTICE DISTORTIONS AND/OR STRONG ELECTRONIC CORRELATIONS. PEIERLS INSTABILITY. THE MODEL OF SU-SCHRIEFFER-HEEGER. FUNDAMENTAL PROPERTIES OF TRANSITION METAL COMPOUNDS. GENERAL MODEL OF COULOMBIC INTERACTION. DERIVATION OF HUBBARD'S HAMILTONIAN. HUBBARD MODEL: MEAN-FIELD SOLUTION, MAGNETIC SUSCEPTIBILITY, STONER CRITERION, ATOMIC LIMIT, STRONG COUPLING LIMIT AND T-J HAMILTONIAN. FUNDAMENTAL PROPERTIES OF RARE EARTH COMPOUNDS AND ACTINIDES AND ANDERSON MODEL (SINGLE IMPURITY AND LATTICE CASES). |
Teaching Methods | |
