KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: THE SCOPE OF THIS COURSE IS TO TEACH THE BASIC ORGANIC CHEMISTRY IN ORDER TO ALLOW THE STUDENTS TO CLASSIFY AND GRAPHICALLY REPRESENT THE ORGANIC COMPOUNDS RATIONALISING AND PREDICTING THE REACTIVITY ON THE BASIS OF THE FUNCTIONAL GROUPS. THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE WILL ALLOW THE PREDICTION OF THE REACTIVITY OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS ON THE BASIS OF THEIR STRUCTURE. APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING – ENGINEERING ANALYSIS: THE OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE IS TO DEVELOP AND APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE GAINED BY THE STUDENTS IN ORDER TO SOLVE THE PROBLEMS OF ORGANIC CHEMISTRY ESPECIALLY ON AN INDUSTRIAL SCALE. APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING – ENGINEERING DESIGN: THE STUDENTS WILL LEARN THE BASIS OF ORGANIC CHEMISTRY IN CONNECTION WITH THE MOST IMPORTANT REACTIONS USED AT THE INDUSTRIAL LEVEL. IN THIS WAY THE ABILITY TO DESIGN NEW CHEMICAL REACTORS WILL BE IMPROVED MAKING JUDGMENTS - ENGINEERING PRACTICE: EXAMPLES OF COMMON ORGANIC REACTIONS USED IN THE INDUSTRY WILL BE OFTEN REPORTED DURING THE CLASS HOURS. THIS WILL HELP THE STUDENTS TO HAVE A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE ORGANIC CHEMISTRY IMPACT ON THE INDUSTRIAL LEVEL COMMUNICATION SKILLS – TRANSVERSAL SKILLS: THE STUDENTS WILL LEARN HOW TO INTERACT WITH EACH OTHERS FOR THE SOLUTION OF THE CHEMICAL PROBLEMS AND HOW TO COMMUNICATE THE INFORMATION IN A PROPER WAY FOR THEIR FUTURE TEAM WORK LEARNING SKILLS – TRANSVERSAL SKILLS: THE STUDENTS WILL CONTINUOUSLY BE ENCOURAGED TO DISCUSS WITH THE TEACHER ABOUT THE MOST DIFFICULT TOPICS. THEY WILL BE ALSO BE ENCOURAGED TO STUDY SUBJECTS BEYOND THE PROGRAM IN ORDER TO ENLARGE THEIR KNOWLEDGE ABOUT ORGANIC CHEMISTRY. INVESTIGATION SKILLS – TRANSVERSAL SKILLS: THE STUDENTS WILL CONSTANTLY BE ENCOURAGED TO STUDY THE CURRENT CHEMICAL LITERATURE AND THE INDUSTRIAL PATENTS REPORTED FOR THE MAIN CHEMICAL PROCESSES INVOLVING ORGANIC REACTIONS. IN THIS WAY THEY WILL RELATE THE BASIC ORGANIC CHEMISTRY TO THE MAIN TECHNOLOGICAL/INDUSTRIAL CONTEXT. |

Teaching Methods | |

ALL THE LECTURES (50 HOURS, 5 CFU) WILL BE HELD IN THE CLASSROOM USING THE BOARD. THERE WILL ALSO BE 10 HOURS (1 CFU) COMPLETELY DEDICATED TO THE SOLUTION OF THE PROBLEMS GIVEN DURING THE THEORY LECTURES. ATTENDANCE AT THE LECTURES IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED. |

DURING THE COURSE THERE WILL BE PARTIAL ASSESSMENTS TESTS IN ORDER TO EVALUATE THE KNOWLEDGE LEVEL GAINED BY THE STUDENTS. THERE WILL BE TWO WRITTEN TESTS DURING THE COURSE. THE WRITTEN TESTS WILL DEAL ABOUT THE NOMENCLATURE, THE REACTIVITY AND SYNTHESIS OF ORGANIC MOLECULES. THE FINAL GRADE WILL BE THE AVERAGE OF THE TWO TESTS. FOR THE STUDENTS WHO DIDN'T PASS THE TESTS, A FINAL WRITTEN EXAM IS REQUIRED. TO PASS THE EXAM A MINIMUM LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE IS REQUESTED ABOUT THE MOST IMPORTANT TOPICS STUDIED DURING THE CLASSES AND MARKS EQUAL OR HIGHER THAN 18/30. THE EXCELLENCE IS GAINED WHEN THE STUDENTS KNOW THE STUDIED SUBJECTS IN A DEEP AND CRITICAL WAY. |
