THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE KNOWLEDGE OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT LITERARY AND CULTURAL PHENOMENA OF NINETEENTH-CENTURY ENGLAND. IT WILL INTRODUCE TO THE ANALYSIS OF LITERARY TEXTS, AND PROVIDE BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF CONTEMPORARY METHODOLOGICAL APPROACHES TO TEXTS. BY THE END OF THE COURSE STUDENTS WILL IMPROVE THEIR UNDERSTANDING OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TEXTS AND CONTEXTS, AND WILL BE ABLE AUTONOMOUSLY TO RE-ELABORATE THE MATERIAL THEY HAVE STUDIED. THEY WILL ALSO BE ABLE TO TALK ABOUT THE THEMES OF THE COURSE IN ITALIAN, AND BE CONFIDENT ABOUT THEIR USE OF CRITICAL APPROACHES TO TEXTS. ADDITIONALLY, THEY WILL DEVELOP THE ABILITY TO APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED TO OTHER SUBJECTS, AND WILL BE ABLE TO USE ENGLISH TO COMMUNICATE BASIC CONCEPTS RELATED TO THE COURSE. |

THE COURSE CONCENTRATES UPON SOME OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT LITERARY AND CULTURAL PHENOMENA OF NINETEENTH-CENTURY ENGLAND, WHICH WILL BE ANALYZED THROUGH THE LENSES OF CULTURAL STUDIES. ITS READING LIST INCLUDES ESSAYS AND NOVELS WHICH FOCUS ON THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION, AND WHICH WILL ALLOW TO RECONSTRUCT THE DEBATE ABOUT THIS PHENOMENON. SPECIFIC ATTENTION WILL ALSO BE PAID TO QUESTIONS OF GENDER WHICH EMERGE IN THE PERIOD. THE COURSE WILL ALSO FOCUS ON THE IMPACT OF DARWIN’S EVOLUTIONISM ON THE VICTORIAN WORLD VIEW. |
