THE COURSE AIMS TO STUDY TWENTIETH CENTURY BRITISH ARTISTIC AND LITERARY AVANT-GARDE THROUGH THE ANALYSIS OF SIGNIFICANT LITERARY TEXTS BELONGING TO DIFFERENT GENRES. IT ALSO AIMS TO OFFER STUDENTS SOME ANALYTICAL TOOLS FOR AN UNDERSTANDING OF MODERNISM AS A COMPOSITE LITERARY AND CULTURAL PHENOMENON. BY THE END OF THE COURSE STUDENTS WILL IMPROVE: - KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: KNOWLEDGE OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT EXPRESSIONS OF BRITISH MODERNISM AND OF THEIR RELATION TO THE EUROPEAN CONTEXT; KNOWLEDGE OF THE CRITICAL TOOLS NECESSARY FOR ANALYZING LITERARY AND CULTURAL TEXTS. - CAPACITY OF APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: CAPACITY OF ANALYSING LITERARY TEXTS IN RELATION TO THEIR GENRE AND TO THE WIDER CULTURAL CONTEXT; AWARENESS OF THE DIFFERENT CRITICAL METHODOLOGIES AND CAPACITY TO APPLY THEM TO DIFFERENT TEXTS. - CAPACITY OF MAKING INFORMED JUDGMENTS AND CHOICES: ABILITY TO GATHER AND INTERPRET RELEVANT DATA AND TO FORMULATE AUTONOMOUS JUDGMENTS ON THE THEMES AND TEXTS STUDIED DURING THE COURSE. - COMMUNICATION SKILLS: STUDENTS MUST BE ABLE TO DISCUSS LITERARY TEXTS AND THEMES FLUENTLY AND CLEARLY IN ITALIAN. THEY MUST ALSO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS LITERARY TEXTS AND THEMES WITH A DEGREE OF FLUENCY AND SPONTANEITY IN ENGLISH. - CAPACITY TO CONTINUE LEARNING: STUDENTS MUST DEVELOP THOSE LEARNING SKILLS THAT ARE NECESSARY FOR THEM TO ENRICH THEIR KNOWLEDGE OF ENGLISH LITERATURE AND TO UNDERTAKE FURTHER STUDY WITH A HIGH DEGREE OF AUTONOMY. |

THE COURSE WILL FOCUS ON SCHOOLS AND LITERARY MOVEMENTS OF EARLY TWENTIETH-CENTURY ENGLAND. THE MOST RECENT CRITICAL APPROACHES WILL BE USED TO READ AND ANALYZE SELECTED TEXTS FROM DIFFERENT LITERARY GENRES (POETRY, NOVEL, SHORT STORY).THE COURSE WILL BE ORGANISED IN TEACHING BLOCKS WITH PARTICULAR ATTENTION BEING GIVEN TO THE FOLLOWING THEMES: A) MODERNISM: PERIODS AND DEFINITIONS. B) THE BRITISH AVANT-GARDE AND THE EUROPEAN CONTEXT. C) LITERARY MODERNISM AND THE VISUAL ARTS. D) THE MODERNIST SHORT STORY: "THE SISTERS" AND "THE DAUGHTERS OF THE LATE COLONEL". E) THE POETRY OF T.S. ELIOT. F) THE MODERNIST NOVEL: "THE GOOD SOLDIER" AND "TO THE LIGHTHOUSE". G) WOMEN’S WRITING. |

LECTURES (54 HOURS). EXTRACTS FROM THE TEXTS INCLUDED IN THE READING LISTS WILL BE ANALYSED AND DISCUSSED IN CLASS. STUDENTS WILL BE ENCOURAGED TO GIVE PRESENTATIONS ON TOPICS OF THEIR OWN CHOICE. |
