THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE KNOWLEDGE OF SOME OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT ASPECTS OF ENGLISH LITERATURE AND CULTURE THROUGH THE ANALYSIS OF LITERARY TEXTS BELONGING TO DIFFERENT GENRES. BY THE END OF THE COURSE THE STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO RELATE THE LITERARY TEXTS TO THEIR CULTURAL CONTEXT AND TO APPLY DIFFERENT CRITICAL METHODOLOGIES TO DIFFERENT TEXTS. THEY WILL ALSO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE MATERIAL BOTH IN ITALIAN AND IN ENGLISH. |

THE COURSE AIMS TO STUDY TWENTIETH CENTURY BRITISH ARTISTIC AND LITERARY AVANT-GARDE THROUGH THE ANALYSIS OF LITERARY TEXTS BELONGING TO DIFFERENT GENRES. IN PARTICULAR, MODERNISM'S MOST SIGNIFICANT THEMES AND FORMAL INNOVATIONS WILL BE ILLUSTRATED THROUGH THE CLOSE READING OF VIRGINIA WOOLF'S NOVEL "TO THE LIGHTHOUSE" (1927). CONTENTS: A) MODERNISM: PERIODS AND DEFINITIONS. B) THE BRITISH AVANT-GARDE AND THE EUROPEAN CONTEXT. C) THE SHORTER FORM: POETRY AND THE SHORT STORY D) LITERARY MODERNISM AND THE ARTISTIC AVANT-GARDE. E) THE MODERNIST NOVEL: "THE GOOD SOLDIER" AND "TO THE LIGHTHOUSE". F) WOMEN’S WRITING. |
