Objectives
TTHE COURSE WILL BUILD UPON AND EXPAND ON THE WORK DONE IN THE THREE-YEAR DEGREE COURSE. IT AIMS TO PROVIDE A MORE IN-DEPTH KNOWLEDGE OF THE HISTORY OF LITERATURE THROUGH AN ANALYSIS OF SPECIFIC CULTURAL MATERIAL AND LITERARY TEXT. IT ALSO AIMS TO PROVIDE KNOWLEDGE THAT CAN BE USED IN AREAS OF WORK THAT REQUIRE ENGLISH.

STUDENTS MUST HAVE PASSED THE FORTH-YEAR ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND ENGLISH LITERATURE EXAMS
Contents
THE COURSE WILL ANALYSE THE CULTURAL AND LITERARY PHENOMENON TERMED NEO-VICTORIANISM, WHICH HAS RECENTLY PERMEATED MANY FIELDS, SUCH AS FICTION, ENGLISH STUDIES, CINEMA, TV SERIES, THEME PARKS, MANGA AND VIDEOGAMES, CUTTING ACROSS THE DIVIDE BETWEEN HIGH AND MASS CULTURE. THE COURSE WILL ESPECIALLY CONCENTRATE ON SOME LITERARY AND FILMIC TEXTS, ANALYSING THEM AS REWRITINGS AND ADAPTATIONS WITH THEIR UNDERLYING POLITICAL IMPLICATIONS, AND FOCUSING ON SUCH NOTIONS AS “SPECTRALITY” AND “WRITING AS ILLUSIONISM”, WHICH WILL HELP EXPLAIN “THE AFTERLIFE OF THE 19TH CENTURY IN THE CULTURAL IMAGINARY”.
Teaching Methods
LECTURES. FILMIC MATERIAL WILL BE SHOWN AND DISCUSSED IN CLASS.
Verification of learning
FINAL ORAL EXAM. STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO DISCUSS CRITICALLY THE LITERARY AND CRITICAL TEXTS THAT ARE THE FOCUS OF THE COURSE BOTH IN ENGLISH AND IN ITALIAN; TO MASTER APPROPRIATE METHODOLOGIES FOR THE ANALYSIS OF LITERARY AND CULTURAL TEXTS; TO RE-ELABORATE THEMES OF THE COURSE AUTONOMOUSLY. PART OF THE FINAL EVALUATION WILL BE WRITTEN ESSAYS AND GROUP PRESENTATIONS ON THEMES AGREED UPON WITH THE LECTURER.
