THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH FURTHER OPPORTUNITIES TO ENRICH THEIR KNOWLEDGE OF ENGLISH LITERATURE AND CULTURE, TO DEVELOP A MORE IN-DEPTH KNOWLEDGE OF THE LITERARY PHENOMENA AND OF THE SOCIOCULTURAL EXPERIENCES RELATED TO THEM, TO REFINE THEIR KNOWLEDGE OF THE DIFFERENT METHODOLOGICAL APPROACHES TO THE ANALYSIS OF LITERARY TEXTS AND TO IMPROVE THEIR CRITICAL AWARENESS. STUDENTS WILL DEVELOP THE ABILITY TO APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED IN VARIOUS PROFESSIONAL CONTEXTS. |

THE COURSE WILL DEAL WITH THE THEME OF THE CIRCUS IN 19TH AND 20TH CENTURY ENGLISH CULTURE AND LITERATURE BY ANALYSING NOVELS AND SHORT NARRATIVES BELONGING TO BOTH THE VICTORIAN PERIOD AND MODERNISM, INCLUDING THE AVANT-GARDE. IT WILL ALSO FOCUS ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE ARTS (THE CIRCUS IS WIDELY PRESENT IN PAINTING AND CINEMA), THE NATURE OF PERFORMANCE AND POPULAR ENTERTAINMENT. |

STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO DISCUSS CRITICALLY THE LITERARY AND CRITICAL TEXTS THAT ARE THE FOCUS OF THE COURSE BOTH IN ENGLISH AND IN ITALIAN; TO MASTER APPROPRIATE METHODOLOGIES FOR THE ANALYSIS OF LITERARY AND CULTURAL TEXTS; TO RE-ELABORATE THEMES OF THE COURSE AUTONOMOUSLY. PART OF THE FINAL EVALUATION WILL BE WRITTEN ESSAYS AND GROUP PRESENTATIONS ON THEMES AGREED UPON WITH THE LECTURER. |
