Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO DEVELOP:
- ADVANCED KNOWLEDGE OF PARTICULAR ASPECTS OF ENGLISH LITERATURE AND CULTURE, ALSO CONNECTED TO CONTEMPORANEITY;
- KNOWLEDGE OF ADVANCED AND DIVERSIFIED METHODOLOGICAL TOOLS;
- CRITICAL AWARENESS.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
STUDENTS WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO KNOW IN DEPTH:
- THE CULTURAL CONTEXT AND THE LITERARY WORKS RELATED TO THE COURSE;
- DIFFERENT METHODOLOGIES OF ANALYSIS OF THE LITERARY TEXT;
- THE CONTEMPORARY CRITICAL DEBATE.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
- SELECT AND APPLY APPROPRIATE ANALYTICAL AND CRITICAL TOOLS TO THE LITERARY TEXT;
- UNDERSTAND BRITISH CULTURAL PHENOMENA ALSO RELATED TO CONTEMPORANEITY;
- UNDERTAKE RESEARCH IN THE FIELD OF ENGLISH LITERATURE AND CULTURE.

MAKING JUDGEMENTS
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
- FORMULATE AUTONOMOUS JUDGEMENTS ON ENGLISH LITERATURE AND CULTURE;
- MAKE COMPARISONS BETWEEN DIFFERENT CULTURAL CONTEXTS.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO PRESENT THE CONTENTS OF THE DISCIPLINE AND THE CRITICAL DEBATE WITH FLUENCY BOTH IN ITALIAN AND IN ENGLISH.

LEARNING SKILLS
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
- SELECT THE METHODOLOGICAL TOOLS APPROPRIATE TO UPGRADE THEIR KNOWLEDGE;
- USE SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE APTLY;
- DEVELOP AN APTITUDE FOR RESEARCH.
Prerequisites
GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE, LITERATURE AND CULTURE. STUDENTS MUST HAVE PASSED THE EXAMS OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE OF THE THREE-YEAR DEGREE COURSE.

THE COURSE CONCENTRATES ON THE BLOOMSBURY GROUP AND ITS ROLE IN THE BRITISH CULTURE BETWEEN THE WARS, ESPECIALLY FOCUSING ON ITS RANGE OF ACTIVITIES (PSYCHOANALYSIS, PAINTING, LITERATURE, POLITICS, ECONOMICS) AND THE POWERFUL POSITIONS HELD BY ITS MEMBERS, WHICH ENABLED THEM TO EXERT A SIGNIFICANT INFLUENCE ON THE WAYS OF LIVING, THE IDEAS AND THE ARTISTIC ACHIEVEMENTS OF ENGLAND IN 1920-1940. STARTING FROM A SELECTION OF ESSAYS, MEMOIRS AND NOVELS WRITTEN BY THE MEMBERS THEMSELVES, IT WILL ANALYSE THE SHAPING OF “BLOOMSBURY” AS POWER GROUP AND CULTURAL ICON, ALSO TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THEIR USE OF MEDIA SUCH AS RADIO AND POPULAR MAGAZINES.

Teaching Methods
LECTURES IN ENGLISH. FILMIC MATERIAL WILL BE SHOWN AND DISCUSSED IN CLASS. STUDENTS WILL BE ENCOURAGED TO GIVE PRESENTATIONS ON TOPICS OF THEIR OWN CHOICE RELATED TO THE COURSE. STUDENTS ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND CLASSES.
Verification of learning
FINAL ORAL EXAM. STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO DISCUSS CRITICALLY THE LITERARY AND CRITICAL TEXTS THAT ARE THE FOCUS OF THE COURSE BOTH IN ENGLISH AND IN ITALIAN; TO MASTER APPROPRIATE METHODOLOGIES FOR THE ANALYSIS OF LITERARY AND CULTURAL TEXTS; TO RE-ELABORATE THEMES OF THE COURSE AUTONOMOUSLY. PART OF THE FINAL EVALUATION COULD ALSO BE WRITTEN ESSAYS AND GROUP PRESENTATIONS ON THEMES AGREED UPON WITH THE LECTURER.
