Objectives
The growing pervasiveness of network technologies and the radical nature of the transformations they generate in political power relations and in the system of international relations have given impetus to a new field of study: Digital Geopolitics. The Course, the first in Italy to be activated, intends to provide students with the main theoretical and methodological coordinates of this new field of scientific and academic knowledge, in order to highlight its specificities with respect to neighbouring fields of more consolidated tradition, such as that of International Relations. How is digital geopolitics defined? What are its salient features? What is its peculiar contribution to the understanding of relations between states in an arena marked by acute conflicts and competition for hegemony? These are some of the questions that will be the focus of the teaching.
Prerequisites
None.

It would be desirable to have taken the International Relations course first.
Contents
After a presentation of the genesis of the new discipline, the course will focus mainly on the following topics:

a.The links between the unequal distribution of digital resources and the hierarchisation of geopolitical power relations;
b.The policies that, pursued at the national and/or international level, contribute to the consolidation of current geopolitical arrangements;
c. The mechanisms of reproduction of digital inequalities and real phenomena of digital expulsion.

Special attention will be given to the role of the European Union in these geopolitical dynamics, in order to understand its role as a global player.
Teaching Methods
The course includes lectures and exercises. A methodology aimed at enhancing the conscious and informed acquisition of on-line information will be favoured, especially those from databases set up by study centres and/or international organisations such as the World Bank.
In addition, the elaboration and/or use of maps and/or graphs dedicated to the depiction of specific areas of geopolitical relevance, accompanied by analyses and comments based on secondary sources (books, research reports, policy briefs) will be envisaged. An example is given by TNI (The Transnational Institute) in Amsterdam.
Verification of learning
The final examination consists of an oral examination on the indicated texts and/or a paper/policy brief on a topic dealt with or agreed with the lecturer.
The paper may also be written in English. Examination texts: books, articles, reports, etc. may also be written in English.
Texts
For an initial introduction, it is useful:

Romano, Antonello (2022), La geografia delle piattaforme digitali. Mappe, spazi e dati dell'intermediazione digitale, Firenze University Press.

Other texts will be indicated and provided in the course of the lectures.
More Information
Different texts and programmes can be agreed with the lecturer.
