Objectives | |

THE OBJECTIVE OF THE TEACHING COURSE IS TO PROVIDE THE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES FOR CORRECTLY DESIGNING AND CONSTRUCTING A ROAD. THE COURSE PROVIDES KNOWLEDGE IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND A SET OF STANDARD RULES CONCERNING THE ROAD DESIGN, AS WELL AS METHODOLOGICAL APPROACHES FOR CORRECTLY DESIGNING AND CONSTRUCTING A ROAD. THIS KNOWLEDGE IS THEN APPLIED IN THE DESIGN OF A ROAD FOR A SPECIFIC CASE AND THE ALLOWING TO FOLLOW THE CONSTRUCTIVE PHASES. THE ABILITY TO MAKE DECISIONS FOCUSES ON THE ANALYSIS OF DIFFERENT METHODS OF DESIGNING AND CONSTRUCTING OF A ROAD, AS WELL AS ON A COMPARISON BETWEEN ALTERNATIVE HORIZONTAL ALIGNMENTS. THE COMMUNICATION SKILL IS DEVELOPED BY MEANS OF THE ALLOWING STUDENTS TO WORK IN DESIGN GROUPS AND DISCUSSING BOTH AMONG THEM AND WITH PROFESSOR ABOUT THE MORE APPROPRIATE CHOICES. ONLY A SUFFICIENT KNOWLEDGE OF THE FUNDAMENTAL COURSES OF ENGINEERING IS REQUIRED TO UNDERSTAND THE LESSONS CONCERNING THIS SUBJECT. |

THE COURSE TEACHES CRITERIA AND METHODS FOR THE DESIGN OF HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL ROAD ALIGNMENT. ELEMENTS OF CROSS SECTION ARE ALSO EXPLAINED. EMBANKMENTS, TRENCHES, AND ROAD MATERIALS ARE SUBSEQUENTLY STUDIED. PAVEMENT DESIGN AND THE APPROACH TO THE STABILITY OF RETAINING WALLS ARE ALSO TAUGHT. |
