OBJECTIVES: THE TEACHING COURSE PROVIDES THE CRITERIA AND BASIC METHODOLOGIES FOR CORRECTLY DESIGNING AND CONSTRUCTING ROAD INFRASTRUCTURES. RESULTS EXPECTED AND COMPETENCE TO GAIN: TO LEARN, BY MEANS OF STUDYING THE INTERACTION HUMAN BEHAVIOUR-ROAD ENVINONMENT-VEHICLE, THE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES FOR CORRECTLY DESIGNING AND CONSTRUCTING A ROAD; TO BE ABLE TO SHOW THE KNOWLEDGE GAINED GRAPHICALLY IN FORM OF DRAWINGS BY REPRESENTING IN RIGHT WAY THE FEATURES OF ROAD ENGINEERING. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: TO KNOW THE THERMINOLOGY USED IN THE FIELD OF: ROAD DESIGN METHODOLOGIES; BASIC CONCEPTS; DESIGN CRITERIA, AND ROAD DESIGNS UNDERSTANDING. APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: TO BE ABLE OF APPLYING, IN THE FIELD OF NORMATIVE REFERENCES,THE CRITERIA OF ROAD DESIGN AND UNDERSTANDING THE PROFESSIONAL ROAD PROJECTS MADE BY OTHER ENGINEERS. MAKING JUDGEMENTS: TO BE ABLE TO INDIVIDUALIZE THE MOST APPROPRIATE METHODS FOR DESIGNING THE FEATURES OF ROAD ENGINEERING, BY MEANS OF OPTIMIZING THE PROCESS OF REPRESENTING THE ENVIRONMENT CONTAINING THE ROAD. COMMUNICATION SKILLS THE COMMUNICATION SKILL IS DEVELOPED BY MEANS OF ALLOWING THE STUDENTS TO WORK IN DESIGN GROUPS, DISCUSSING BOTH AMONG THEM AND WITH PROFESSOR ABOUT THE MORE APPROPRIATE CHOICES OF THE ROAD, AND DESCRIBING THE DRAWINGS MADE. LEARNING SKILLS: TO BE ABLE TO KEEP THE KNOWLEDGE GAINED AND TO FOLLOW THE PROCESS OF UPDATING OF ROAD KNOWLEDGES AUTONOMOUSLY. |
Prerequisites | |

THE COURSE, AFTER AN INTRODUCTION, TEACHES: CRITERIA AND METHODS FOR THE DESIGN OF HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL ROAD ALIGNMENT (HOURS OF LESSONS 3). TRACTIVE EFFORT, RESISTANCE OF VEHICLES, SIDE FORCE COEFFICIENT, STOPPING AND PASSING SIGHT DISTANCES (HOURS OF LESSONS 3, HOURS OF PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS 2). EQULIBRIUM OF VEHICLE IN A ROAD CURVE. DESIGNING OF HORIZONTAL CURVE RADIUS. (HOURS OF LESSONS 3, HOURS OF PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS 2). DESIGNING OF HORIZONTAL TRANSITION CURVES (HOURS OF LESONS 4, HOURS OF PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS 3). DESIGNING OF A ROAD INCLUDING CURVES, TRANSITION CURVES, AND TANGENTS; AS WELL AS COORDINATING HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL ALIGNMENTS (HOURS OF LESSONS 3, HOURS OF PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS 1). LONGITUDINAL PROFILE OF CROSS SECTION AND CORRECTIONS (HOURS OF LESSONS 3, HOURS OF PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS 2). PLOTS OF CURVATURE, SPEED, STOPPPING AND PASSING SIGHT DISTANCES (HOURS OF LESSONS 3, HOURS OF PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS 2). VERTICAL ALIGNMENT (HOURS OF LESSONS 3, HOURS OF PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS 2). TRAFFIC FLOW PARAMETERS, LEVELS OF SERVICE; SAFETY BARRIERS (HOURS OF LESSONS 3, HOURS OF PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS 2). CONCTRUCTION OF ROAD EMBANKMENTS, TRENCHES AND PAVEMENTS (HOURS OF LESSONS 3); CHARACTERISTICS OF ROAD MATERIALS (HOURS OF LESSONS 3) DESIGNING OF ROAD PAVEMENTS (HOURS OF LESSONS 3, HOURS OF PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS 2) APPROACH TO THE STABILITY OF RETAINING WALLS (HOURS OF LESSONS 3, HOURS OF PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS 2). |
Teaching Methods | |
---|---|
THE COURSE IS BASED ON 60 HOURS OF THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL LESSONS (6 CFU). IN PARTICULAR THE TEACHING COURSE FORESEES 40 HOURS OF THEORETICAL LESSONS WITH 20 HOURS OF PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS; AS WELL AS THE CORRECTION OF ROAD DESIGNS IS ALSO FORESEEN. STUDENTS ARE DIVIDED IN GROUPS OF 2-3 PEOPLE FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF A ROAD PROJECT. THE ATTENDANCE AT THIS COURSE IS COMPULSORY. STUDENTS MUST KEEP AN ATTENDANCE AT LEAST OF 70%. |
Verification of learning | |
---|---|
THE FINAL EXAM IS AT THE END OF TEACHING COURSE AND IS BASED ON A DISCUSSION CONCERNING BOTH THEORETICAL SUBJECTS AND THE DESIGN OF A ROAD. THIS IS BASED ON A SPEECH OF 30-40 MINUTES. THE RESULT OF EXAM FORESEES A VOTE RELATED TO THIRTY. FOR GETTING THE FULL MARKS THE CAPACITY OF TRANSVERSE CORRELATIONS AMONG DIFFERENT SUBJECTS OF THE TEACHING COURSE AND/OR OTHER COURSES WILL BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT. |
