Objectives
OBJECTIVES: THE TEACHING COURSE PROVIDES THE CRITERIA AND BASIC METHODOLOGIES FOR CORRECTLY DESIGNING AND CONSTRUCTING INFRASTRUCTURES AS ROADS (INCLUDING INTERSECTIONS), RAILWAYS AND AIRPORTS.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
THIS COURSE PROVIDES A GREATER IN-DEPTH KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF A ROAD. ROAD INTERSECTIONS ARE ALSO STUDIED AND DESIGNED. IN ADDITION THE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES FOR CORRECTLY DESIGNING RAILWAYS, AS WELL AS APRONS AND AIRPORT RUNWAYS ARE ALSO TAUGHT.

FOR THIS AIM, THE COURSE PROVIDES THE TOOLS IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND IN DETAIL THE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF ROAD DESIGN STRATEGY AND INTERSECTIONS, AS WELL AS OF RAILWAYS AND AIRPORT RUNWAYS.
APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
THE AFOREMENTIONED KNOWLEDGE IS THEN APPLIED BOTH TO A ROAD AND INTERSECTIONS INVOLVING THE COMPLETE PROCESS OF DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION.
MAKING JUDGEMENTS:
THE ABILITY TO MAKE DECISIONS IS BASED ON THE CHOICE CRITERIA THAT APPEAR TO BE MORE APPROPRIATE FOR AN ACCURATE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF: ROADS, ROAD INTERSECTIONS, RAILWAYS, AND AIRPORT RUNWAYS.
COOMUNICATION SKILLS:
THE COMMUNICATION SKILL IS STRENGTHENED BY MEANS OF ALLOWING STUDENTS TO WORK IN GROUPS AND DISCUSSING BOTH AMONG THEM AND WITH THE PROFESSOR ABOUT THE CHOICES OF DESIGNING AND CONSTRUCTING.
LEARNING SKILLS:
TO BE ABLE TO KEEP BOTH THE KNOWLEDGE GAINED AND TO DESIGN ROADS AND INTERSECTIONS IN OTHER ENVIRONMENTS THAN THAT INVESTIGATED.
Prerequisites
THE EXAM IN “ROADS, RAILWAYS AND AIRPORTS I” HAS TO HAVE BEEN PASSED.
Contents
THE COURSE INLCLUDES THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL LESSON. THE NUMBER OF THEORETICAL LESSONS IS 40 WITH 20 HOURS OF PRATICAL APPLICATIONS.
THE COURSE PROVIDES:
CRITERIA AND METHODS FOR THE DESIGN OF A ROAD ACCORDING TO THE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF DESIGN STRATEGY, TAKING INTO ACCOUNT ALSO ROAD SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENT (HOURS OF LESSONS 3):
UNSIGNALIZED ROAD INTERSECTIONS (HOURS OF LESSONS 3, HOURS OF PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS 2);
SIGNALIZED INTERSECTIONS (HOURS OF LESSONS 3, HOURS OF PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS 2);
ROUNDABOUTS (HOURS OF LESSONS 3, HOURS OF PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS 2);
WEAVING AREA AND TERMINAL RAMPS (HOURS OF LESSONS 3, HOURS OF PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS 2).
CRITERIA FOR DESIGNING RAILWAYS (HOURS OF LESSONS 3):
ANALYSIS OF RAILWAY LOADS (HOURS OF LESSONS 3, HOURS OF PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS 2);
METHODS AND MODELS FOR DESIGNING RAILWAY (HOURS OF LESSONS 3, HOURS OF PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS 2);
METHODS AND MODELS FOR DESIGNING RAILWAY SUPERSTRUCTURE (HOURS OF LESSONS 3, HOURS OF PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS 2);
CRITERIA FOR DESIGNING AIRPORTS (HOURS OF LESSONS 2);
ANALYSIS OF AIRPLANE LOADS (HOURS OF LESSONS 2);
DESIGN OF CONCRETE SLABS EMPLOYED IN AIRPORTS (HOURS OF LESSONS 3, HOURS OF PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS 2);
DESIGN OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS USED IN AIRPORTS (HOURS OF LESSONS 3, HOURS OF PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS 2).
DESIGN OF RETAINING WALLS FOR CONCENTRATE FORCES (HOURS OF LESSONS 3, HOURS OF PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS 2).
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE IS BASED ON THEORETICAL (40 HOURS) AND PRACTICAL LESSONS (20 HOURS), AS WELL AS ON THE CORRECTION OF THE DESIGN BOTH OF ROAD AND INTERSECTION. THE PRESENCE OF STUDENTS IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED EVEN IF IT IS NOT COMPULSORY.
Verification of learning
THE FINAL EXAM IS BASED ON A DISCUSSION, WHICH IS PLANNED AT THE END OF THE TEACHING COURSE, CONCERNING BOTH THEORETICAL SUBJECTS AND THE DESIGN OF THE ROAD AND INTERSECTIONS.THE EXAM IS AT THE END OF TEACHING COURSE AND IT IS BASED ON A SPEECH OF ABOUT 40-50 MINUTES. THE RESULT OF EXAM FORESEES A VOTE RELATED TO THIRTY. FOR GETTING THE FULL MARKS, THE CAPACITY OF TRANSVERSE CORRELATIONS AMONG THE DIFFERENT SUBJECTS OF THE TEACHING COURSE AND/OR OTHER COURSES WILL BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT.
