GENERAL OBJECTIVE THE COURSE AIMS TO ACQUIRE METHODOLOGIES OF LITERARY CRITICISM AND LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS FROM A COMPARATIVE PERSPECTIVE. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING SKILLS THE STUDENT: - WILL KNOW THE METHODS OF LITERARY CRITICISM; - WILL KNOW THE TECHNIQUES OF LITERARY, METRIC-VERSIFICATORY AND LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS; - WILL KNOW THE HISTORY OF ROMANCE LANGUAGES. ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO: - ANALYZE LINGUISTIC DATA FROM SYNCHRONIC AND DIACHRONIC PERSPECTIVES; - TRANSLATE MEDIEVAL ROMANCE TEXTS FOLLOWING PHILOLOGICAL TECHNIQUES AND METHODOLOGIES; - COMPARE THE PHONETIC AND MORPHOLOGICAL PHENOMENA OF DIFFERENT LANGUAGES COMPARATIVELY; - COMPARE AND ANALYZE MEDIEVAL LITERARY TEXTS ON THE BASIS OF THE UNITY OF MEDIEVAL LITERATURE; - INDEPENDENTLY TRANSLATE ANCIENT-FRENCH, OCCITAN OR CASTILIAN TEXTS. AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO - USE PHILOLOGICAL TOOLS TO FORMULATE HYPOTHESES, RECOGNIZE LOGICAL CONNECTIONS, ARGUE ABOUT CONTENT AND LANGUAGE OF TEXTS; - COMPARE AND EVALUATE DIFFERENT INTERPRETATIONS DRAWN FROM READING LITERARY TEXTS AND DRAW APPROPRIATE CONCLUSIONS. COMMUNICATION SKILLS THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO: - EXPRESS LITERARY CONTENT IN A NARRATIVE OR SYNTHETIC MANNER IN CRITICAL OR TRANSLATION VERSIONS LEARNING SKILLS THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO: THE STUDENT WILL HAVE ACQUIRED: - METHODOLOGICAL SKILLS OF LINGUISTIC AND LITERARY ANALYSIS OF TEXTS. |

THE COURSE IS STRUCTURED IN TWO TRACKS: PHILOLOGICAL-LITERARY AND HISTORICAL-LINGUISTIC. THROUGH THE READING, TRANSLATION AND PHILOLOGICAL, LINGUISTIC AND LITERARY COMMENTARY OF SOME PARTICULARLY RELEVANT TEXTS IN THE VARIOUS ROMANCE LANGUAGES, THE AIM IS TO INTRODUCE STUDENTS - TO THE SALIENT PHENOMENA OF THE FORMATION OF THE NEO-LATIN LANGUAGES WITH LINGUISTIC EXERCISES ON THE TEXTS READ AND TRANSLATED IN CLASS TO ILLUSTRATE THE INTERACTION OF THE MAIN LINGUISTIC PHENOMENA IN THE EVOLUTION OF WORDS FROM LATIN TO THE ROMANCE LANGUAGES, FOR A TOTAL OF 24 HOURS INCLUDING EXERCISES: - HISTORICAL INTRODUCTION TO THE BIRTH OF THE ROMANCE LANGUAGES: 4H - ANALYSIS OF THE MAIN PHONETIC PHENOMENA + EXERCISES: 10H -ANALYSIS OF THE MAIN MORPHOLOGICAL PHENOMENA: 6H - THE LEXICON AND SYNTAX: 4H -ANALYSIS OF THE FIRST VERNACULAR TEXTS AND THE MAIN LITERARY GENRES OF MEDIEVAL ROMANCE LITERATURE, THROUGH TRANSLATION INTO ITALIAN AND LITERARY COMMENTARY IN A COMPARATIVE KEY OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT TEXTS FROM THE VARIOUS ROMANCE AREAS: - HISTORICAL-LITERARY INTRODUCTION = 6H - INTRODUCTION TO THE EPIC GENRE = 6H - INTRODUCTION TO THE LYRIC GENRE = 6H - INTRODUCTION TO THE NOVEL GENRE = 6H - INTRODUCTION TO THE SHORT STORY GENRE = 6H |

THE COURSE TAKES PLACE IN THE FIRST SEMESTER AND COMPRISES THEORETICAL LECTURES AND CLASSROOM EXERCISES. THE EXERCISES IN HISTORICAL LINGUISTICS CONSIST, GIVEN THE LATIN ETYMON OF A WORD AND ITS VARIOUS ROMANCE EXISTENCES, IN THE IDENTIFICATION OF THE LINGUISTIC PHENOMENA THAT DETERMINED ITS EVOLUTION. STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE LECTURES AND EXERCISES WITH THE NECESSARY DILIGENCE AND ATTENTION. THE COURSE PROVIDES TWO SIMILAR BUT DISTINCT SYLLABUSES OF STUDY: FOR FREQUENT AND NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS. A STUDENT CAN BE DEFINED AS AN ATTENDING STUDENT IF HE/SHE ATTENDS AT LEAST 22 HOURS OF HISTORICAL LINGUISTICS LECTURES AND 24 HOURS OF LITERATURE LECTURES AND HAS ACCESS TO THE END-OF-COURSE TESTS. NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS, ON THE OTHER HAND, WILL NOT HAVE ACCESS TO THE END-OF-COURSE TESTS. |

THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE TEACHING OBJECTIVES IS CERTIFIED BY PASSING AN EXAMINATION WITH A GRADE IN THIRTIETHS. AT THE END OF THE COURSE, ATTENDING STUDENTS, I.E. STUDENTS WHO HAVE ATTENDED AT LEAST 22 HOURS OF HISTORICAL LINGUISTICS LESSONS AND 24 HOURS OF LITERATURE LESSONS, ARE GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE WRITTEN TESTS AS A PARTIAL OR TOTAL REPLACEMENT FOR THE ORAL EXAMINATION. THESE TESTS, TWO IN TOTAL, EACH CONSIST OF TEN OPEN-ENDED QUESTIONS ON THE VARIOUS PARTS OF THE SYLLABUS. THE FIRST TEST (2H), ON A LITERARY TOPIC, ALSO INCLUDES SHORT PASSAGES FROM TEXTS READ IN CLASS THAT THE STUDENT MUST TRANSLATE INTO ITALIAN AND COMMENT ON FROM A LITERARY AND METRICAL POINT OF VIEW. THE SECOND TEST (2H), ON A PURELY LINGUISTIC TOPIC, CONTAINS 4 THEORETICAL QUESTIONS ON SOME OF THE MORPHOLOGICAL PHENOMENA IMPORTANT IN THE TRANSITION FROM LATIN TO THE ROMANCE LANGUAGES, AND 6 EXERCISES ON A PHONETIC TOPIC (STARTING FROM THE LATIN ETYMON OF A LEMMA, THE STUDENT MUST EXPLAIN AND COMMENT ON THE VARIOUS PHONETIC PHENOMENA THAT HAVE OCCURRED OVER TIME, TRANSFORMING, IN THE VARIOUS ROMANCE LANGUAGES, THE SOUND AND SPELLING OF THAT PARTICULAR WORD). IN BOTH WRITTEN TESTS, EACH QUESTION IS WORTH 3 POINTS FOR A TOTAL OF 30 POINTS. IF THE OVERALL MARK FOR THE TWO TESTS IS EQUAL TO OR HIGHER THAN 18/30, THE STUDENT MAY CONSIDER HIMSELF EXEMPT FROM THE ORAL TEST. THE FINAL MARK WILL RESULT FROM THE AVERAGE OF THE MARKS OBTAINED IN THE TWO TESTS. A STUDENT WHO FAILS ONE OR BOTH TESTS, OR WHO IS NOT SATISFIED WITH THE FINAL MARK, MAY SIT THE ORAL EXAMINATION. FOR NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS AND FOR ATTENDING STUDENTS WHO DID NOT TAKE THE TWO WRITTEN TESTS, OR WHO ARE NOT SATISFIED WITH THE FINAL RESULT OF THE WRITTEN TESTS, THE FINAL EXAMINATION IS ORAL, WITH A GRADE IN THIRTIETHS, AND INVOLVES THE READING, TRANSLATION AND LINGUISTIC, VERSIFYING AND LITERARY COMMENTARY OF ONE OR MORE PASSAGES ANALYSED IN CLASS AND CHOSEN BY THE TEACHER. IT STARTS FROM THE TEXTUAL AND LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS OF A PASSAGE AND THEN BROADENS THE DISCOURSE IN A COMPARATIVE KEY, CONSIDERING OTHER TEXTS, LITERARY GENRES AND COEVAL LINGUISTIC EXPRESSIONS. THE EXAMINATION IS PASSED IF THE STUDENT DEMONSTRATES A THOROUGH KNOWLEDGE OF THE HISTORICAL-LINGUISTIC AND LITERARY TOPICS COVERED IN THE COURSE PROGRAMME. IN ASSESSING THE WRITTEN AND/OR ORAL EXAMINATION, ACCOUNT WILL BE TAKEN OF: -KNOWLEDGE OF THE SUBJECT MATTER -ABILITY TO SYNTHESISE AND CLARITY OF EXPOSITION -ABILITY TO ANALYSE TEXTS FROM A PHILOLOGICAL POINT OF VIEW BY PLACING THEM IN A PRECISE HISTORICAL-LINGUISTIC AND LITERARY FRAMEWORK. |
