His main research activities concern the fifteenth century painting in Italy and Europe, with particular reference to the context of the Angevin and Aragonese kingdom of Naples in its relations with the rest of the Peninsula, with Flanders and with the countries of the Mediterranean basin. He has recently published (2011) a monograph on the Quattrocento painter Melozzo da Forlì.
