Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO OUTLINE THE BASIC LINES OF THE HISTORICAL AND ARTISTIC DEVELOPMENT OF THE ANCIENT GREEK AND ROMAN WORLD, ANALYZING THE MAIN TYPES OF MONUMENTS ON ARCHITECTURAL, URBANISTIC EVIDENCES, PRINCIPAL POTTERY’S CLASSES AND THE TESTIMONY OF PAINTING AND SCULPTURE OF THE GREEK AND ROMAN AGES, IN ORDER TO HIGHLIGHT THE DIACHRONIC DEVELOPMENT OF TECHNIQUES AND STYLES AS WELL AS CULTURAL FORMS UNDERLYING THE CHOICES OF MODELS AND THE ROLE OF ARTISTIC PATRONAGE.THROUGH APPROPRIATE TEXTBOOKS AND USING OF COMPUTER TEACHING AIDS, IT WILL BE ACQUIRED A BASIC UNDERSTANDING OF THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL RECORD OF THE CLASSICAL WORLD, IN GREEK AND ROMAN AGE IN ITS VARIOUS HISTORICAL AND ARTISTIC EXPRESSIONS, ESPECIALLY PAINTING AND CERAMICS, SCULPTURE AND ARCHITECTURE AND THE LEARNING OF APPROPRIATE METHODOLOGICAL TOOLS FOR THEIR READING AND INTERPRETATION CHRONOLOGICALLY AND HISTORICALLY ORIENTED. IT ALSO INTENDS TO REACH, THROUGH THE CORRECT APPLICATION OF METHODOLOGICAL TOOLS, A RANGE OF JUDGMENTS AND THE ABILITY TO ORIENT IN THE INTERPRETATION OF THE DOCUMENT IN ITS ARCHAEOLOGICAL, CHRONOLOGICAL AND CULTURAL FRAMEWORK, AND TO DEVELOP THE ABILITY TO PROPERLY REPORT THEM TO A TOPOGRAPHIC, CHRONOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL AND ARTISTIC CONTEXT. THE FINAL GOAL IS A RELAPSE IN A WORK CONTEXT AS WELL AS A BASE FOR A MORE ADVANCED FORMATION.

A GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF GREEK AND ROMAN HISTORY.

BY ACQUIRING OF ADEQUATE METHODOLOGICAL TOOLS FOR READING OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL DOCUMENTS AS AN INSTRUMENT FOR HISTORICAL INTERPRETATION, IT WILL BE POSSIBLE TO PROVIDE A BASIC UNDERSTANDING OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL RECORDS OF THE CLASSICAL WORLD IN GREEK AND ROMAN AGES CONSIDERED IN ITS VARIOUS MANIFESTATIONS, AND TO DEVELOP THE ABILITY TO IDENTIFY AND FRAME MATERIAL PRODUCTIONS IN THEIR HISTORICAL AND ARTISTIC CONTEXT. THE COURSE IS DIVIDED INTO THREE MODULES OF 20 HOURS EACH: AN INTRODUCTION TO CLASSICAL ARCHAEOLOGY (PART I), GREEK ARCHAEOLOGY AND ART HISTORY (PART II) AND ROMAN ARCHAEOLOGY AND ART HISTORY (PART III). IN THE FIRST PART, IT WILL BE PROVIDED BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF CLASSICAL ARCHAEOLOGY AND METHODOLOGICAL TOOLS; IN THE SECOND AND THIRD PARTS, IT WILL BE EXPLORED THE ARTISTIC, ARCHITECTONICAL AND URBANISTIC PRODUCTIONS AND THE PROBLEMS RELATING TO THE POLIS OF ATHENS IN THE ARCHAIC, CLASSICAL AND ROMAN EMPIRE WITH PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO CONTEXTS.
Teaching Methods
FRONTAL LESSONS, VISIT OF MUSEUMS AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL AREAS. DURING THE LESSONS AND IN THE FINAL EXAMINATION, IT WILL BE CHECKED THE ABILITY OF STUDENTS TO APPLY THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE TO THE CATALOGING AND CHRONOLOGICAL CLASSIFICATION OF ANCIENT ARTIFACTS AS WELL AS TO USE A SCIENTIFIC LANGUAGE TO COMMUNICATE PROPERLY THE GAINED KNOWLEDGE; DURING THE COURSE, IT ALSO WILL BE VERIFIED THE CAPABILITY OF UNDERSTANDING AND SELF-LEARNING MANUALS AND SPECIFIC TEXTS. DURING THE COURSE, BIBLIOGRAPHIC INDICATIONS AND EDUCATIONAL TOOLS WILL BE PROVIDED AND THEY WILL BE AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE PROGRAM.
Verification of learning
TEST IN PROGRESS; ORAL EXAMINATION TO VERIFY THE ABILITY OF STUDENTS TO APPLY THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE TO THE CATALOGING AND CHRONOLOGICAL CLASSIFICATION OF ANCIENT ARTIFACTS AS WELL AS TO USE A SCIENTIFIC LANGUAGE IN ORDER TO COMMUNICATE PROPERLY THE GAINED KNOWLEDGE.
