Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO ANALYSE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF ETRUSCAN-ITALIC COMMUNITIES AND GREEK COLONIES IN SOUTHERN ITALY AND SICILY FROM THE IRON AGE TO THE ROMANISATION. THE DEVELOPMENT OF THESE TWO AREAS WILL BE BROUGHT INTO FOCUS THROUGH THE EXAMINATION OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL SOURCES, ALSO WITH THE AIM OF DEEPENING THEIR CULTURAL AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC RELATIONS. STUDENTS WILL IMPROVE THEIR PRACTICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL SKILLS IN IDENTIFYING AND CONTEXTUALISING ARCHAEOLOGICAL PRODUCTIONS IN THEIR HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL FRAMEWORK.

THE COURSE IS ORGANISED IN TWO MODULES:
THE FIRST(30 HOURS) DEALS WITH THE ECONOMIC, POLITICAL, AND INSTITUTIONAL STRUCTURES OF ETRUSCAN SOCIETY.
THE SECOND MODULE (30 HOURS) AIMS TO ANALYZE THE MAIN ARTISTIC AND ARTISAN PRODUCTIONS OF MAGNA GREECE AND SICILY. WE WILL EXPLORE TOPICS RELATED TO MARBLE AND TERRACOTTA SCULPTURE OF THE MAIN COLONIES OF SOUTHERN ITALY, TO FIGURED CERAMICS AND THE MAIN PRODUCTIONS - LUCANA, APULA, CAMPANA, PESTANA, AND SICELIOTA, AND TO FUNERARY PAINTING OF THE GREEK AND INDIGENOUS CENTERS OF THE TYRRHENIAN AND IONIC-ADRIATIC COAST. ARTISTIC AND CRAFTSMANSHIP PRODUCTS WILL BE ANALYZED FROM THE ARCHAIC AGE TO EARLY HELLENISM, PARTICULARLY ANALYZING THE PROBLEMS RELATED TO THE USE AND DESTINATION OF THESE PRODUCTS IN DIFFERENT CONTEXTS (VOTIVE, DOMESTIC, FUNERAL) AND ESPECIALLY THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PRODUCTION AND COMMISSION.
AT THE END OF THE COURSE, STUDENTS WILL IMPROVE THEIR SCIENTIFIC AND PRACTICAL SKILLS AND METHODOLOGICAL ABILITIES, WHICH CAN BE APPLIED IN WORKING CONTEXTS SUCH AS ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXCAVATIONS, MUSEUM EXHIBITIONS, AND DISSEMINATION AND PROMOTION ACTIVITIES OF THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL HERITAGE.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE CONSISTS OF LECTURES (60 HOURS), WHICH WILL BE ACCOMPANIED BY CLASSROOM AND LABORATORY EXERCISES. THE LECTURES WILL ENABLE THE STUDENT TO ACQUIRE THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE AND APPLY IT TO THE RELEVANT CONTEXTS. THE COURSE ALSO INCLUDES THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN INDIVIDUAL/GROUP PAPER AIMED AT ACQUIRING THE ABILITY TO APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE IN WORKING CONTEXTS. THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE PAPER WILL BE DISCUSSED WITH THE CLASS DURING LECTURES AND INDIVIDUALLY WITH THE STUDENTS DURING THE LECTURER'S OFFICE HOURS.
PARTICIPATION IN FACE-TO-FACE TEACHING IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED

Verification of learning
THE STUDENT MUST PASS AN ORAL EXAM; EXAMINATION SESSIONS ARE SET OUT IN THE SCHEDULE PUBLISHED ON THE DEGREE COURSE.
THE ORAL TEST WILL VERIFY THE ABILITY TO AUTONOMOUSLY DEVELOP KNOWLEDGE RELATING TO THE HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF ETRURIA, MAGNA GRAECIA, AND SICILY AND TO RECOGNIZE THE MAIN ARCHAEOLOGICAL INDICATORS. THE SCORE DEPENDS ON THE DEGREE OF DEPTH OF THE TOPICS COVERED AND ON THE STUDENT'S ABILITY TO EFFECTIVELY PRESENT THE CONTENTS AND CRITICALLY DISCUSS THE TOPICS COVERED.
