Objectives
THROUGH A DISCUSSION OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT PHONOLOGICAL, MORPHOLOGICAL, SYNTACTIC AND LEXICAL FEATURES OF GERMANIC LANGUAGES, THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE A SYNCHRONIC DESCRIPTION OF ‘COMMON GERMAN’ (I.E., THE STARTING POINT FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF INDIVIDUAL GERMANIC LANGUAGES), AND INTRODUCE THE FIRST LITERARY EXPRESSIONS OF ANCIENT GERMANIC LANGUAGES, PAYING SPECIFIC ATTENTION TO THE ENGLISH AND GERMAN AREAS. THE COURSE ALSO AIMS TO FAMILIARIZE STUDENTS WITH THE MAIN TOOLS (LEXICA, GRAMMARS, CRITICAL EDITIONS) FOR THE STUDY OF MEDIEVAL GERMANIC LANGUAGES AND LITERATURES.
Prerequisites
BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF LINGUISTICS AND KNOWLEDGE AT LEAST OF ONE GERMANIC LANGUAGE.
