Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO
-PROVIDE A SYNCHRONIC DESCRIPTION OF THE ‘COMMON GERMANIC’, THAT IS, THE LINGUISTIC SITUATION THAT CAN BE TAKEN AS A STARTING POINT FOR THE DEVELOPMENTS OF THE INDIVIDUAL GERMANIC LANGUAGES, THROUGH A DISCUSSION OF THE MAIN ASPECTS CHARACTERIZING THE PHONOLOGICAL, MORPHOLOGICAL, SYNTACTIC AND LEXICAL SPECIFICITIES OF THE GERMANIC LANGUAGES;
-PROVIDE THE STUDENTS WITH THE FIRST LITERARY MANIFESTATIONS OF THE ANCIENT GERMANIC LANGUAGES, WITH PARTICULAR REGARD TO ENGLISH AND GERMAN;
-LET THE STUDENTS FAMILIARIZE WITH THE MAIN TOOLS OF STUDY (LEXICONS, GRAMMARS, CRITICAL EDITIONS) OF MEDIEVAL GERMANIC LANGUAGES AND LITERATURES.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE STUDENT WILL KNOW:
-PHILOLOGICAL AND LITERARY METHOD OF ANALYSIS;
-THE MAIN LINGUISTIC (MORPHOLOGICAL AND PHONETIC) CHARACTERISTICS OF MEDIEVAL ENGLISH AND GERMAN IN PASSAGES OF WORKS IN ANGLO-SAXON, OLD SAXON AND OLD HIGH GERMAN STUDIED DURING THE LESSONS AND TO FOLLOW THEIR SUBSEQUENT DEVELOPMENTS;
-THE MAIN TOOLS OF STUDY (LEXICONS, GRAMMARS, CRITICAL EDITIONS) OF MEDIEVAL GERMANIC LANGUAGES AND LITERATURES

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
-APPLY THE PHILOLOGICAL-LITERARY ANALYSIS METHOD TO PAST TEXTS OF ENGLISH AND GERMAN, INCLUDING THEIR FORMS AND STRUCTURES;
-USE THIS KNOWLEDGE TO BETTER UNDERSTAND AND TO CONTROL IN A MORE CONSCIOUS AND RATIONAL WAY TODAY’S ENGLISH AND GERMAN.

MAKING JUDGEMENTS
AT THE END OF THE COURSE STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
-DRAW HYPOTHESIS, RECOGNISE LOGICAL CONNECTIONS, SUPPORT ARGUMENTS, COMPARE AND EVALUATE VARIOUS TEXT TYPES;
-CONTEXTUALISE AND CONSIDER LINGUISTIC AND LITERARY PHENOMENA WITHIN THEIR SOCIO-CULTURAL AND SPATIAL FRAMEWORKS AS WELL AS THEIR EVOLUTION OVER THE TIME.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
ABILITY TO CRITICALLY ILLUSTRATE THE FUNDAMENTAL THEORETICAL PROBLEMS OF THE DISCIPLINE, USING THE LANGUAGE EFFECTIVELY AND PROVIDING DETAILED EXAMPLES.

LEARNING SKILLS
-ABILITY TO AUTONOMOUSLY ANALYSE LITERARY DOCUMENTS AND THEIR RELATIONS FROM A PHILOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL-CULTURAL PERSPECTIVE;
-ABILITY TO HAVE ACQUIRED A PARTICIPATORY ATTITUDE TO STUDY AND TO FEEL THE NEED FOR A PERSONAL STUDY OF THE FUNDAMENTAL THEORETICAL PROBLEMS OF THE DISCIPLINE;
-ABILITY TO LINK THE PHILOLOGICAL SKILLS ACQUIRED WITH THE KNOWLEDGE LEARNT IN THE MOST SIMILAR COURSES (GENERAL LINGUISTICS, MEDIEVAL HISTORY, ROMANCE PHILOLOGY).
Prerequisites
BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF LINGUISTICS AND KNOWLEDGE AT LEAST OF ONE GERMANIC LANGUAGE.

AN INTRODUCTION TO MEDIEVAL GERMANIC CULTURE AND TO THE COMPARATIVE STUDY OF GERMANIC LANGUAGES AND TO MEDIEVAL GERMANIC LITERATURE AND TEXTUAL CRITICISM OF MEDIEVAL GERMANIC TEXTS.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE CONSISTS OF A 45-HOUR SET OF LECTURES.
Verification of learning
THE EXAM CONSISTS OF A SERIES OF QUESTIONS ON THE TOPICS COVERED BY THE PROFESSOR DURING CLASS. DURING THE EXAM THE STUDENT'S LINGUISTIC COMPETENCE AND ANALYTICAL SKILLS IN UNDERSTANDING AND INTERPRETING CERTAIN TEXTS WILL BE TESTED. STUDENTS WILL ALSO BE REQUIRED TO HAVE THE FOLLOWING SKILLS: THE ABILITY TO ARTICULATE CONCEPTS IN A COMPLEX DISCOURSE; TO BE ABLE TO PLACE THE EVENTS OF CULTURAL HISTORY AND LITERARY CIVILISATION IN THE BROADER CONTEXT OF MEDIEVAL EUROPE; TO SELECT DATA CRITICALLY, MEMORISING SIGNIFICANT DATA WITH PRECISION.
