Objectives
GENERAL OBJECTIVE.
THE COURSE AIMS:
- TO PROVIDE A SYNCHRONIC DESCRIPTION OF 'COMMON GERMANIC,' I.E., THE LINGUISTIC SITUATION THAT CAN BE TAKEN AS A STARTING POINT FOR THE DEVELOPMENTS OF THE INDIVIDUAL GERMANIC LANGUAGES, THROUGH A DISCUSSION OF THE POINTS CHARACTERIZING THE PHONOLOGICAL, MORPHOLOGICAL, SYNTACTIC AND LEXICAL SPECIFICITIES OF THE GERMANIC LANGUAGES;
- TO APPROACH STUDENTS TO THE EARLIEST LITERARY MANIFESTATIONS OF ANCIENT GERMANIC LANGUAGES, WITH SPECIAL EMPHASIS ON THE ENGLISH AND GERMANIC AREAS;
- TO FAMILIARIZE STUDENTS WITH THE MAIN STUDY TOOLS (LEXICONS, GRAMMARS, CRITICAL EDITIONS) OF MEDIEVAL GERMANIC LANGUAGES AND LITERATURES.

KNOWLEDGE AND COMPREHENSION SKILLS.
THE STUDENT:
- WILL KNOW THE METHODOLOGIES OF PHILOLOGICAL-LITERARY ANALYSIS;
- WILL KNOW THE MAIN LINGUISTIC FEATURES (MORPHOLOGICAL AND PHONETIC) OF MEDIEVAL ENGLISH AND GERMAN THROUGH EXCERPTS FROM WORKS IN ANGLO-SAXON, OLD SAXON AND OLD HIGH GERMAN;
- WILL KNOW THE MAIN TOOLS FOR STUDYING MEDIEVAL GERMANIC LANGUAGES AND LITERATURES (LEXICONS, GRAMMARS, CRITICAL EDITIONS).

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- APPLY THE PHILOLOGICAL-LITERARY METHOD OF ANALYSIS TO PAST ENGLISH AND GERMAN TEXTS IN THEIR FORMS AND STRUCTURES;
- USE THIS KNOWLEDGE TO BETTER UNDERSTAND AND MORE CONSCIOUSLY AND RATIONALLY MASTER MODERN-DAY ENGLISH AND GERMAN.

AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT.
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- FORMULATE HYPOTHESES, RECOGNIZE LOGICAL CONNECTIONS, ARGUE, COMPARE AND EVALUATE TEXTS STUDIED;
- SITUATE AND CONSIDER LINGUISTIC AND LITERARY PHENOMENA IN RELATION TO THE CULTURAL AND SPATIAL CONTEXTS OF REFERENCE AS WELL AS THEIR TEMPORAL EVOLUTION.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS.
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO CRITICALLY ILLUSTRATE, WITH PROPERTIES OF LANGUAGE AND WITH EXHAUSTIVE EXEMPLIFICATIONS, THE FUNDAMENTAL THEORETICAL PROBLEMS OF THE DISCIPLINE.

LEARNING SKILLS.
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- INDEPENDENTLY ANALYZE LITERARY DOCUMENTS AND THEIR RELATIONS FROM A PHILOLOGICAL AND CULTURAL-HISTORICAL POINT OF VIEW;
- DEMONSTRATE THAT HE/SHE HAS ACQUIRED A PARTICIPATORY ATTITUDE TO STUDY AND FEEL THE NEED FOR PERSONAL INVESTIGATION OF THE FUNDAMENTAL THEORETICAL PROBLEMS OF THE DISCIPLINE;
- CONNECT THE ACQUIRED PHILOLOGICAL SKILLS WITH THE KNOWLEDGE LEARNED IN MORE RELATED COURSES OF STUDY (GENERAL LINGUISTICS, MEDIEVAL HISTORY, ROMANCE PHILOLOGY).

BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF LINGUISTICS AND KNOWLEDGE AT LEAST OF ONE GERMANIC LANGUAGE.

IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE PECULIARITIES PECULIAR TO THE DISCIPLINE, THE COURSE WILL BE DIVIDED INTO TWO PARTS:
(1) INTRODUCTION TO GERMANIC CULTURE AND THE COMPARATIVE STUDY OF GERMANIC LANGUAGES. 24 H.
2) INTRODUCTION TO MEDIEVAL GERMANIC LITERATURES AND THE CRITICISM OF MEDIEVAL GERMANIC TEXTS. 30 H.
THE FIRST PART IS INTENDED FOR KNOWLEDGE OF THE SALIENT POINTS OF GERMANIC CULTURE AND LINGUISTICS:
INDO-EUROPEAN AND THE GERMANIC LANGUAGES.
CONCEPT OF "INDO-EUROPEAN" AND "GERMANIC"/"GERMANIC LANGUAGES".
CLASSIFICATION OF GERMANIC LANGUAGES.
PURPOSES AND MEANS OF LINGUISTIC RECONSTRUCTION.
LINGUISTIC CHARACTERISTICS OF PROTO-GERMANIC.
ELEMENTS OF PHONETICS: VOWELISM, CONSONANTALISM, MAIN PHONETIC LAWS.
ELEMENTS OF MORPHOLOGY: NOUN, ADJECTIVE, VERB. 12 H.
THE GERMANIC CULTURAL UNITY: HISTORICAL AND LITERARY SOURCES; RELIGION; SOCIETY ; MATERIAL CULTURE; RUNIC TRADITION; 12 H
THE BIRTH AND FORMATION OF INDIVIDUAL "NATIONAL" TRADITIONS AND THEIR ESSENTIAL CHARACTERISTICS (HISTORICAL, LINGUISTIC, LITERARY): GOTHIC; ANGLO-SAXON; SAXON; HIGH GERMANIC; OLD NORSE. 10 H.
GERMANS AND ITALY.
GERMANIC BORROWINGS IN THE ITALIAN LANGUAGE.
ADEQUATE EMPHASIS WILL BE GIVEN TO THE MAIN PROBLEMS OF WRITING FORMS RELATED TO THE EARLY LITERARIZATION OF GERMANIC LANGUAGES. IN PARTICULAR, THE FOLLOWING WILL BE ANALYZED: 1) THE ORIGIN, DEVELOPMENT AND FUNCTION OF THE RUNIC ALPHABETS, 2) THE INVENTION OF THE GOTHIC ALPHABET, 3) THE RECEPTION AND ADAPTATION OF THE LATIN ALPHABET IN THE ENGLISH AND GERMAN TRADITIONS. 10 H.
THE SECOND PART IS DEVOTED TO READING SIGNIFICANT PASSAGES IN ANGLO-SAXON, OLD SAXON AND
OLD HIGH GERMAN. THE LECTURES AIM TO INVESTIGATE THE MAIN PHONETIC AND PHONOLOGICAL, MORPHOLOGICAL AND SYNTACTIC PROBLEMS OF ANGLO-SAXON AND OLD SAXON AND OLD HIGH GERMAN. 10 H
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE CONSISTS OF A 54-HOUR SET OF LECTURES.
Verification of learning
THE EXAM CONSISTS OF A SERIES OF QUESTIONS ON THE TOPICS COVERED BY THE PROFESSOR DURING CLASS. DURING THE EXAM THE STUDENT'S LINGUISTIC COMPETENCE AND ANALYTICAL SKILLS IN UNDERSTANDING AND INTERPRETING CERTAIN TEXTS WILL BE TESTED. STUDENTS WILL ALSO BE REQUIRED TO HAVE THE FOLLOWING SKILLS: THE ABILITY TO ARTICULATE CONCEPTS IN A COMPLEX DISCOURSE; TO BE ABLE TO PLACE THE EVENTS OF CULTURAL HISTORY AND LITERARY CIVILISATION IN THE BROADER CONTEXT OF MEDIEVAL EUROPE; TO SELECT DATA CRITICALLY, MEMORISING SIGNIFICANT DATA WITH PRECISION.
