THE COURSE AIMS TO STIMULATE DISCUSSION ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SOCIOLOGY AND GLOBALIZATION AND TO CRITICALLY ADDRESS THE ISSUE OF GLOBAL CHALLENGES FROM A SOCIOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE. WITH THE FIRST OBJECTIVE (GLOBAL SOCIOLOGY), THE COURSE REFLECTS ON THE CHANGES WITHIN THE SOCIOLOGICAL DISCIPLINE AND ON THE WAY ITS CATEGORIES CAN BE USED AND RESHAPED IN ORDER TO INTERPRET THE GLOBAL CONDITION. WITH THE SECOND OBJECTIVE (SOCIOLOGY OF GLOBALIZATION), THE COURSE OFFERS A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF THE ORIGINS OF GLOBALIZATION, ITS CONSTITUTIVE DIMENSIONS, AND THE IMPACTS IT HAS HAD IN RECONFIGURING SOCIAL RELATIONS FROM THE ECONOMIC, CULTURAL, AND POLITICAL POINTS OF VIEW, AND ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN HUMAN BEINGS AND THE ENVIRONMENT. IN THIS WAY, THE COURSE PROPOSES TO THE STUDENTS THE ROLE PLAYED BY SOCIAL THEORY IN UNDERSTANDING AND INTERPRETING CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY AND THE UNDERLYING PROCESSES OF TRANSFORMATION AS A CONSEQUENCE OF THE EFFECT OF GLOBALIZATION. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING THE COURSE AIMS AT DEVELOPING IN THE STUDENT ADVANCED KNOWLEDGE OF CONTEMPORARY SOCIAL THEORIES APPLIED TO THE UNDERSTANDING OF CONTEMPORARY SOCIETIES AND GLOBALIZATION PROCESSES. ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING THE AIM OF THE COURSE IS TO DEVELOP IN THE STUDENT THE INDISPENSABLE COMPETENCES FOR THE ANALYSIS, THE VERIFICATION AND THE APPLICATION OF THE MAIN SOCIOLOGICAL THEORIES FINALIZED TO THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE CHANGES OF THE CONTEMPORARY SOCIETIES AND OF THEIR SUCCESSION UNDER THE EFFECT OF THE GLOBALIZATION. AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT THE OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE IS TO DEVELOP STUDENTS' ABILITY TO REFLECT PERSONALLY AND TO APPLY REASONABLY THE THEORETICAL ELEMENTS THAT EMERGED DURING THE LESSONS, INCLUDING THROUGH THE ASSIGNMENT OF INDIVIDUAL TASKS AND DISCUSSIONS IN THE CLASSROOM. COMMUNICATION SKILLS THE COURSE AIMS AT TRANSFERRING TO THE STUDENTS SUPERIOR SKILLS REGARDING THE COMMUNICABILITY OF THE SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED, BOTH IN ITALIAN AND IN ENGLISH, THROUGH THE READING OF TEXTS IN BOTH LANGUAGES. |

THE TEACHING COURSE AIMS TO OFFER A REASONED EXPOSITION OF THE HISTORICAL ROOTS AND CURRENT DEVELOPMENTS OF THE PROCESSES OF GLOBALIZATION, WHOSE DIFFERENT FORMS CAN BE GRASPED EVEN BEFORE MODERNITY, IN THE RELATIONS BETWEEN EMPIRES AND CIVILIZATIONS AND IN THE GREAT MONOTHEISTIC RELIGIONS. THE TEACHING OFFERS AN IN-DEPTH ANALYSIS OF THE PROCESSES OF GLOBALIZATION, ITS SYMBOLS, ITS DYNAMICS AND ITS MANY CONFLICTS THROUGH THE SYSTEMATIC EXPOSITION OF THE THOUGHT OF THE AUTHORS WHO HAVE DEALT WITH THE ORIGINS, THE UNEQUAL STRUCTURE AND THE DEVELOPMENTS OF GLOBAL SOCIETY FROM PRE-MODERN TO POST-MODERNITY. A SECTION OF THE TEACHING WILL BE DEDICATED TO THE COSMOPOLITAN PERSPECTIVE AND TO THE THEME OF TRANSNATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION, AS KEYS OF CRITICAL-NORMATIVE READING OF GLOBALIZATION PROCESSES. |

THE COURSE CONSISTS OF FRONTAL LESSONS (60 HOURS). THE TEACHING FOLLOWS TRADITIONAL TEACHING METHODS, THROUGH THE ORAL EXPOSITION OF THE CONTENTS WITH THE HELP OF ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATION TOOLS (PROJECTION OF VIDEOS AND SLIDES). IT ALSO AIMS TO PROMOTE COMMUNICATION IN THE CLASSROOM BY STRONGLY SUPPORTING RECIPROCITY AND THE PUBLIC INTERVENTION OF STUDENTS. FINALLY, THE TEACHING AIMS TO PROMOTE STUDENTS’ ABILITY TO LEARN BY ACTIVATING AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE CHANNELS OF COMMUNICATION CAPABLE OF STRENGTHENING THEIR INVOLVEMENT AND LEVEL OF ATTENTION. |

THE LEARNING ASSESSMENT WILL TAKE PLACE THROUGH THE ORAL EXAMINATION ON THE COURSE CONTENTS. THE GRADE, EXPRESSED IN THIRTIETHS PLUS POSSIBLE LAUDE, IS DETERMINED BY THE LEVEL OF THE ORAL PRESENTATION FOR EACH OF THE FOLLOWING DIMENSIONS: COMMUNICATIVE SKILLS, CRITICAL-DESCRIPTIVE SKILLS, APPROPRIATENESS OF DEFINITIONS AND THEORETICAL REFERENCES, MASTERY OF THE CONTENTS. LAUDE IS AWARDED WHEN THE CANDIDATE DEMONSTRATES SIGNIFICANT MASTERY OF METHODOLOGIES AND TOOLS AND SHOWS REMARKABLE LANGUAGE PROPERTIES AND AUTONOMOUS PROCESSING SKILLS. IT IS POSSIBLE FOR STUDENTS TO PRESENT PAPERS, WHICH WILL BE SUBMITTED TO THE FINAL ASSESSMENT AND WHICH WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE DETERMINATION OF THE FINAL GRADE. |
