Objectives
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THIS COURSE IS AN INTRODUCTION ON MICROECONOMIC THEORY. THE STUDENT WILL ACQUIRE THE FUNDAMENTAL METHODOLOGICAL AND THEORETICAL TOOLS OF MICROECONOMICS, RELATING TO INDIVIDUAL DECISIONS OF HOUSEHOLD AND BUSINESSES AND TO THE FUNCTIONING OF THE MARKET, UNDERSTOOD AS A MECHANISM FOR COORDINATING CHOICES.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERTSANDING
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO USE BASIC MICROECONOMIC MODELS TO EXPLAIN CASES AND ECONOMIC PHENOMENA RELATED TO HOUSEHOLDS AND BUSINESSES IN DIFFERENT, COMPETITIVE AND NON-COMPETITIVE CONTEXTS, BOTH IN THE SHORT AND LONG TERM. IN ADDITION THE STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY AND UNDERSTAND EXAMPLES AND DETERMINANTS OF MARKET FAILURES.
Prerequisites
KNOWLEDGE OF ITALIAN LANGUAGE (PREREQUISITE). STUDENT MUSTPASS THE EXAM OF MATHEMATICS FOR ECONOMICS (MANDATORY).

INTRODUCTION TO MICROECONOMICS (2 HOURS). DEMAND. SUPPLY. PRICE. ELASTICITY (8 HOURS). THE THEORY OF INDIVIDUAL CHOICES: PREFERENCES, UTILITY, CONSUMPTION, WORK AND SAVINGS (16 HOURS). THE THEORY OF PRODUCTION AND THE COSTS OF THE FIRM; SHORT AND LONG RUN (10 HOURS). PERFECT COMPETITION: THEORY AND APPLICATIONS (8 HOURS). MONOPOLY. PRICE DISCRIMINATION AND ADVERTISING (6 HOURS). OLIGOPOLY AND MONOPOLISTIC COMPETITION. GAME THEORY AND STRATEGIC BEHAVIOUR (6 HOURS). OTHER CAUSES OF MARKET FAILURE RISK AND INFORMATION. EXTERNALITY AND PUBLIC GOODS (4 HOURS).
