Objectives
EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES AND COMPETENCE TO BE ACQUIRED:
BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF THE PRINCIPLES, METHODS AND INSTRUMENTS ON WHICH NUMERICAL CARTOGRAPHY AND GIS (GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM) ARE BASED, WITH PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO THE COMPUTATIONAL ASPECTS CONCERNING GEOREFERENCING, EDITING, UPDATING, MANAGEMENT AND INTEGRATION OF GRAPHIC FILES AND ALPHANUMERIC DATABASES.
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING SKILLS:
BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF TOPOGRAPHY AND IN PARTICULAR OF THE MAIN TERRESTRIAL REFERENCE SYSTEMS USED IN ITALY AND THE WORLD AND THE ASSOCIATED CARTOGRAPHIC REPRESENTATIONS.
ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:

THE OBJECTIVE OF THE PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES IS TO MAKE THE STUDENT FAMILIAR WITH THE GIS SOFTWARE
Verification of learning
THE ASSESSMENT OF LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR THE DIGITAL CARTOGRAPHY AND GIS COURSE IS BASED ON A SINGLE FINAL EXAMINATION, AIMED AT VERIFYING THE ACQUISITION OF THE EXPECTED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS. THE EXAM CONSISTS OF TWO COMPONENTS: A PRACTICAL ASSIGNMENT AND A WRITTEN TEST.
THE PRACTICAL ASSIGNMENT INVOLVES THE EXECUTION AND DOCUMENTATION OF SPECIFIC GIS OPERATIONS, SELECTED FROM THOSE COVERED DURING THE COURSE. IN PARTICULAR, STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO PRESENT THE SETUP AND IMPLEMENTATION OF ONE OR MORE TYPICAL TASKS, SUCH AS: GEOREFERENCING OF CARTOGRAPHIC RASTER FILES, EDITING AND MANAGING VECTOR LAYERS, PERFORMING SPATIAL QUERIES ON GEOREFERENCED DATA, CONDUCTING THEMATIC AND/OR SPATIAL ANALYSES USING GIS TOOLS, AND PRODUCING FINAL MAP LAYOUTS. THE ASSIGNMENT MUST DEMONSTRATE TECHNICAL ACCURACY, A SOUND UNDERSTANDING OF THE UNDERLYING CONCEPTS, AND AN INFORMED USE OF THE SOFTWARE TOOLS EMPLOYED.
THE WRITTEN TEST INCLUDES MULTIPLE-CHOICE QUESTIONS AND OPEN-ENDED QUESTIONS, COVERING THE ENTIRE COURSE CONTENT. EACH QUESTION IS ASSOCIATED WITH A SPECIFIC SCORE, WHICH IS COMMUNICATED BEFORE THE START OF THE EXAM. THE TEST MUST BE COMPLETED WITHIN THE GIVEN TIME FRAME, GENERALLY NO LONGER THAN 60 MINUTES.
THE FINAL GRADE IS EXPRESSED ON A 30-POINT SCALE. HONORS (CUM LAUDE) MAY BE AWARDED BASED ON:
ACHIEVEMENT OF THE MAXIMUM SCORE IN THE WRITTEN TEST;
COMPLETENESS, ACCURACY, AND DEPTH OF THE PRACTICAL ASSIGNMENT.
