COURSE AIM:THE COURSE AIMS TO GIVE KNOWLEDGE OF THE PROPERTIES OF ENZYMES, ON THEIR USE IN ORGANIC SYNTHESIS WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO APPLICATIONS IN ASYMMETRIC SYNTHESIS. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING THE MAIN ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE WILL BE: •KNOWLEDGE OF MAIN STRUCTURAL CHARACTERISTIC OF ENZYMES AND THEIR PROPERTIES •UNDERSTANDING ENZYME'S STRUCTURE-ACTION MODE RELATIONSHIPS •KNOWLEDGE OF MAIN STRATEGIES OF ASYMMETRIC SYNTHESIS EMPLOYED IN BIOCATALYSIS (KINETIC RESOLUTION, DESYMMETRIZATION, ENANTIOSELECTIVE TRANSFORMATION OF PROCHIRAL SUBSTRATES). •KNOWLEDGE OF MAIN METHODS IN ORGANIC SYNTHESIS BASED ON THE USE OF ENZYMES. APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE: •TO SOLVE PROBLEMS OF CHEMO- REGIO- AND ENANTIOSELECTIVE SYNTHESIS OF ORGANIC MOLECULES THROUGH BIOCATALYTIC METHODS. MAKING JUDGMENTS THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE: •TO CRITICALLY EVALUATE SCIENTIFIC ARTICLES THAT REPORT RESULTS OBTAINED USING BIO-ORGANIC CATALYSIS •TO ANALYZE A SYNTHETIC ISSUE AND IDENTIFY THE MOST SUITABLE BIOCATALYTIC SYSTEM FOR THE RESOLUTION •TO DESCRIBE STUDIES OF BIOCATALYSIS USING SUITABLE TERMINOLOGY. COMMUNICATION SKILLS THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE: •TO READ AND CRITICALLY EXAMINE SCIENTIFIC TEXTS AND ARTICLES IN ENGLISH •TO PRESENT THE FINDINGS FROM A RECENT ARTICLE IN THE LITERATURE CONCERNING ENZYME MECHANISM WITH CRITICAL READING AND LANGUAGE PROPERTIES. LEARNING SKILL THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE: •TO USE THE TEACHING MATERIAL PROVIDED BY THE TEACHER INDEPENDENTLY AND CRITICALLY. •TO FIND AND INTERPRET ADDITIONAL INFORMATION RELATED TO THE TOPICS COVERED BY THE COURSE. |
Prerequisites | |
---|---|
FUNDAMENTALS OF ORGANIC CHEMISTRY I AND II. |
Contents | |
---|---|
• BASIC NOTIONS OF STEREOCHEMISTRY (1H). • ENZYMES: CLASSIFICATION, STRUCTURAL CHARACTERISTICS (3H) • GENERAL ASPECTS OF THE ENZYMATIC CATALYSIS. MODES OF ACTION OF ENZYMES (16H). •MECHANISM OF ACTION OF COENZYMES (12H). •APPLICATION OF BIOCATALYSTS IN ASYMMETRIC SYNTHESIS: HYDROLYTIC RACTIONS, REDUCTIONS, OXIDATIONS, TRANSAMINATIONS, SPECIAL TECHNIQUES (12H). • CURRENT STRATEGIES FOR IMPROVING CATALYTIC EFFICIENCY OF ENZYMES (4H) |
Teaching Methods | |
---|---|
THE TEACHING CONSISTS OF 48 HOURS OF CLASSROOM LESSONS SUPPORTED BY PROJECTIONS. THE TEACHING MATERIAL (THE SLIDE-SHOW IN THE FORM OF PDF OR PPT FILE) WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE TO THE ATTENDING STUDENTS, AND TO STUDENTS WHO HAVE REQUESTED IT BY E-MAIL. |
Verification of learning | |
---|---|
THE EXAM CONSISTS OF AN ORAL EXAMINATION IN WHICH THE STUDENT PRESENTS A RESEARCH PAPER OF RECENT LITERATURE ABOUT A SPECIFIC TOPIC OF BIOCATALYSIS, PREVIOUSLY AGREED WITH THE TEACHER. IN ADDITION, BASED ON THE CONTENT OF THE DISCUSSION, THE UNDERSTANDING AND THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE TOPICS TREATED THROUGHOUT THE COURSE IS ASSESSED. THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING ACQUIRED BY THE STUDENT, BASED ON THE DISCUSSION OF THE TOPIC REPORTED IN THE RESEARCH PAPER AND THE SUBJECTS OF THE ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS, IS EVALUATED IN THIRTY. |
