Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO INTRODUCE THE STUDENT TO THE KNOWLEDGE OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS AND THE NEED FOR A "GREEN ECONOMY" THROUGH THE ILLUSTRATION OF PRINCIPLES AND METRICS OF GREEN CHEMISTRY AND EXAMPLES RELATING TO CHEMICAL PROCESSES ON BOTH LABORATORY AND INDUSTRIAL SCALE.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE STUDENT WILL KNOW AND HAVE DEVELOPED UNDERSTANDING REGARDING:
- ISSUES THAT HAVE CAUSED SOME ENVIRONMENTAL DISASTERS;
- CONCEPTS OF GREEN CHEMISTRY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY;
- USE AND LIMITS OF GREEN METRICS;
- RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL SUSTAINABILITY;
- DIFFERENCES BETWEEN REFINERIES AND BIOREFINERIES;
- ENERGY EFFICIENT PROCESSES AND ALTERNATIVE REACTION CONDITIONS.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- IDENTIFY ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS RELATED TO CHEMICAL SYNTHESIS CONDUCTED IN THE LABORATORY OR IN INDUSTRY;
-USE THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED TO USE SAFE AND "BENIGN" CHEMICAL SUBSTANCES FOR THE ENVIRONMENT;
- USE GREEN METRICS APPROPRIATELY;
- APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED IN DISCRIMINATING THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF CHEMICALS FROM RENEWABLE SOURCES;
- DEVELOP CHEMICAL PROCESSES WITH LOW ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT.

MAKING JUDGMENTS
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- CRITICALLY EVALUATE SYNTHETIC PROTOCOLS AND INDUSTRIAL PROCESSES IN TERMS OF ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT AND HEALTH RISKS;
- DISCERN THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF “GREEN” SYNTHESES COMPARED TO SYNTHESES COMMONLY USED IN THE LABORATORY OR IN THE CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES.
- SELECT THE MOST SUITABLE METHODOLOGIES FOR THE ENERGY EFFICIENCY OF CHEMICAL PROCESSES.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- COMMUNICATE THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED ON GREEN PRODUCTS AND PROCESSES USING APPROPRIATE TECHNICAL-SCIENTIFIC LANGUAGE;
-CREATE POWER-POINT PRESENTATIONS ON SPECIFIC COURSE TOPICS.

LEARNING SKILL
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
-CRITICALLY CONSULT THE REFERENCE TEXTS AND THE BIBLIOGRAPHY CONTAINED THEREIN;
- EXPLAIN THE TOPICS COVERED IN THE COURSE THROUGH THE STUDY AND INTERPRETATION OF CURRENT SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE.
Prerequisites
BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF ORGANIC CHEMISTRY

Teaching Methods
THE COURSE IS PRESENTED IN A STANDARD FORMAT OF LECTURES (48 HOURS).
Verification of learning
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF COURSE OBJECTIVES IS VERIFIED BY AN ORAL EXAMINATION IN WHICH SOME QUESTIONS ON THE TOPICS COVERED DURING THE COURSE WILL BE ASKED. DISCUSSION (MAXIMUM OF 40 MINUTES) IS AIMED TO ASSESS:
- THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE OF THE THEORETICAL CONTENT OF THE COURSE
- THE LEVEL OF COMPETENCE ACQUIRED IN SCIENTIFIC LANGUAGE, IN LOGIC CAPACITY AND ABILITY TO SUMMARIZE ALL THE ANSWERS.
EVALUATION IS IN 30/30. MINIMUM SCORE (18/30) WILL BE ATTRIBUTED TO STUDENTS WITH SUPERFICIAL KNOWLEDGE AND LIMITED COMPREHENSION OF BASIC TOPICS AS WELL AS SUFFICIENT CLARITY SKILLS.
MAXIMUM SCORE (30/30) WILL BE ATTRIBUTED TO STUDENTS WITH DEEP KNOWLEDGE AND COMPREHENSION OF TOPICS AS WELL AS RIGOROUS CLARITY SKILLS.
SCORE OF 30/30 CUM LAUDE WILL BE ATTRIBUTED TO STUDENTS WITH EXCELLENT KNOWLEDGE AND COMPREHENSION OF TOPICS AS WELL AS EXCELLENT CLARITY SKILLS.
