EDUCATION, RESEARCH  AND ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES IN ITALY

  • Degree in Chemistry (specialized in Biological and Organic Chemistry) at the University of Naples; the thesis discussed was entitled "Cloning of lignin degradation enzymes isolated from the fungus Pleurotus ostreatus" and was directed by Prof. Giovanni Sannia.
  • Professional Chemist 
  •  Course "Advanced Analytical Methods in Biotechnology", which took place at the Servizio di Spettrometria di Massa, CNR, Naples.
  • Ph. D. in "Chemical sciences" (Dissertation entitled "Phenol oxidase from Pleurotus ostreatus: structure, properties and possible applications in the environmental biotechnologies")

  • 1997-98 Recipient of a grant of  the CIBA Geigy Foundation (Japan) for Promotion of Science - IX -Europe Scientists Exchange Program, at the laboratory of  Prof. Norio Murata at the National Institute for Basic Biology, Okazaki , Japan.
  • 2003 Visiting scientist at the Functional Genomic Center – University of Rochester Medical Center, Rochester, NY, USA


RESEARCH INTERESTS

  • 1989-95 Biodegradation of lignin in white-rot basidiomycetes. Cloning and characterization of a laccase (blue copper phenol oxidase) from Pleurotus ostreatus. Biotechnological applications of ligninolytic enzymes in biopulping processes and in biological treatment of phenol rich waste pollutants.
  • 1995-97 Molecular mechanisms of the differentiation and of the virulence induction in the dimorfic fungus Histoplasma capsulatum. Differential analysis of gene expression and identification of genes turned on during host invasion.
  • 1997-98 Mutational analysis of the heat-shock signal transduction pathway in Saccahromyces cerevisiae.
  • 1998- Biochemistry and molecular bases of acute and sub-clinical effects of nutritional deficiencies of copper and iron.
