Objectives
THE COURSE INTENDS TO PROVIDE A DEEP KNOWLEDGE REGARDING THE ROMAN WORLD TAKING INTO CONSIDERATIONS DIFFERENT BRANCHES OF THE DOCUMENTATION (MATERIALS, MONUMENTAL CONTEXTS, INSCRIPTIONS, ICONOGRAPHY).
THE ANALYSIS OF DOCUMENTATION WILL INCLUDE HISTORY AND METHODOLOGY OF EXCAVATIONS AS WELL AS INFORMATION RELATED TO THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL CONTEXTS AS PART OF TRANSFORMATIONS ELABORATED BY SUCCESSIVE HISTORICAL PERIODS.
COMPREHENSION OF DATA AND INFORMATION BY STUDENTS WILL BE TURNED INTO AN ABILITY OF EVALUATION OF RELATED SIGNIFICANCE AND OF THE INTERPRETATIONS BY SCHOLARS REGARDING MATERIAL AND MONUMENTAL CONTEXTS.
THE COURSE WILL BE ADDRESSED AS MORE AS POSSIBILE IN ORDER TO PROVIDE INFORMATION AND COMPETENCE IN THE FIELD OF CULTURAL HERITAGE - INCLUDED METHODOLOGY REGARDING MUSEUMS AND EXHIBITIONS - ACCORDING TO THE “FARO CONVENTION ON THE VALUE OF CULTURAL HERITAGE FOR SOCIETY”.
Prerequisites
BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF GREEK AND ROMAN ARCHAEOLOGY AND HISTORY OF ART. BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF ANCIENT HISTORY.

THE COURSE WILL FOCUS ON “SCENOGRAPHY OF POWER IN THE ROMAN WORLD” ACCORDING TO THE FOLLOWING TOPICS:
1.MILITARY VICTORY AS ORIGIN OF THE POWER OF THE HELLENISTIC KINGS AND ROMAN IMPERATORES;
2.HONORS EQUAL TO DEITIES: CULT OF THE HELLENISTIC KING AND IMPERIAL DIVINIZATION AT ROME;
3.PARADES, TRIUMPHS, ADVENTUS: THE CONQUEST OF THE OIKOUMENE;
4.RULING THE NATURE: GARDEN AND POWER AS SYMBOL OF THE GOLDEN AGE;
5.AUGUSTUS’ HOROLOGIUM IN CAMPUS MARTIUS: CALENDARS AND POWER ON TIME;
6.MODERN PARADES OF POWER AND ANCIENT ROOTS: UNIVERSAL EXPOSITIONS; FASCISM AND ROMAN TRADITION; CONTEMPORARY ICONOGRAPHY OF POWER; LANGUAGE OF ADVERTISEMENT.
