Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO LEARN THE CHARACTERISTICS OF INDUSTRIAL WASTEWATERS, TREATMENT OF EFFLUENTS FROM PROCESS INDUSTRIES, PARTICULARLY FROM FOOD INDUSTRY, THE RECOVERY AND VALORIZATION TECHNIQUES, THE POLLUTANT EMISSIONS REGULATIONS. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: UNDERSTANDING THE TERMINOLOGY USED IN THE TREATMENT OF EMISSIONS FROM INDUSTRIAL PROCESSES, COMPREHENSION OF THE ARRENGMENT OF WATER TREATMENT UNITS AND OF WASTEWATER TREATMENT, CAPACITY TO IDENTIFY KEY PARAMETERS IN THE DEFINITION OF TREATMENT PROCESSES. APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: UNDERSTANDING THE PROCESSES FOR TREATING EFFLUENT, UNDERSTANDING THE DESIGN OF TREATMENT OF EFFLUENTS FROM FOOD INDUSTRY IN RELATION TO THE SIZE AND LOCATION OF PRODUCTION, KNOWLEDGE OF ASPECTS OF MANAGEMENT OF TREATMENT PLANTS EFFLUENTS. MAKING JUDGMENTS: BEING ABLE TO IDENTIFY THE MOST APPROPRIATE METHODS TO DEFINE A PROCESS FOR THE REMOVAL OF POLLUTANTS IN AN EFFLUENT COMMUNICATION SKILLS: TO PRESENT ORAL ARGUMENT RELATING TO THE TREATMENT OF EFFLUENTS. LEARNING SKILLS: KNOWING HOW TO APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE TO DIFFERENT CONTEXTS FROM THOSE PRESENTED DURING THE COURSE.

PREREQUISITES FOR THE SUCCESSFUL ACHIEVEMENT OF THE OBJECTIVES ARE KINETICS, CHEMICAL REACTORS, PLANT ENGINEERING, PROCESS CONTROL, INDUSTRIAL CHEMISTRY AND CATALYSIS.

LIQUID EFFLUENT CONVENTIONAL TREATMENTS(2 H THEORY): MECHANICAL(2 H THEORY), CHEMICAL(3 H THEORY, 3H EXERCISES), BIOLOGICAL TREATMENTS(6 H THEORY, 3H EXERCISES).
INNOVATIVE TREATMENT TECHNOLOGIES: MBR (2 H THEORY)
DISINFECTION AND PURIFICATION OF WASTE WATER TREATMENT BY INTEGRATED AND ADVANCED OXIDATION (2 H THEORY, 3H LAB)
CHARACTERIZATION OF POLLUTANTS IN INDUSTRIAL AND FOOD WASTEWATER (1 H THEORY)
CASE STUDIES: EFFLUENT TREATMENT FROM THE CANNING INDUSTRY, FROM DAIRY INDUSTRY (1 H THEORY, 3H EXERCISES).
Teaching Methods
TEACHING METHODS: THE COURSE INCLUDES LECTURES (45H), CLASSROOM EXERCISES (9H) AND PRACTICAL LABORATORY AND/OR IN FIELD VISITS (6H). THE EXERCISES IN THE CLASSROOM INCLUDE THE RESOLUTION OF NUMERICAL EXERCISES. THE LABORATORY EXERCISES ARE RELATED TO ANALYTICAL METHODS FOR THE DETERMINATION OF POLLUTANT PARAMETERS. IN FIELD VISITS ON THE STUDENTS EXAMINE ISSUES RELATED TO TECHNOLOGY AND THE MANAGEMENT OF THE TREATMENT OF EFFLUENTS.
LECTURES ARE PROVIDED IN CLASSES IN THE PRESENCE OF STUDENTS.
THE MINIMUM FRACTION OF ATTENDED HOURS OF LECTURES REQUIRED TO TAKE THE EXAM IS 50%.
THE ATTENDANCE WILL BE NO CHECKED.
STUDENTS WHO DO NOT REACH THE SUFFICIENT NUMBER OF ATTENDED HOURS MUST SUBMIT A REQUEST TO THE TEACHING COUNCIL, SPECIFYING THE TOPICS THEY COULD NOT ATTEND AND THE REASONS. THE COUNCIL WILL ESTABLISH THE METHODS OF MAKING UP MISSED LESSONS ON A CASE-BY-CASE BASIS

Verification of learning
THE EVALUATION OF THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE PREFIXED OBJECTIVES WILL BE CARRIED OUT THROUGH A WRITTEN TEST ON THE NUMERICAL EXERCISES DEVELOPED DURING THE COURSE AND AN ORAL EXAMINATION.
THE WRITTEN TEST LASTS TWO HOURS AND CONSISTS OF AN EXERCISE WITH FIVE QUESTIONS. EVERY QUESTION CORRESPONDS TO A SCORING (AVERAGE 6), ASSIGNED IF THE ANSWER IS CORRECTLY DEVELOPED ALSO NUMERICALLY, REDUCED IF THE ANSWER IS INCOMPLETE OR CONCEPTLY WRONG.
THE ORAL TEST IS CONSTITUTED BY A QUESTION ON A TOPIC ANALYZED DURING THE LESSONS. THE AVERAGE DURATION IS ABOUT THIRTY MINUTES (IN THE CASE OF CORRECT EXPOSURE), BUT IT EXTENDS UP TO ONE HOUR IN THE PRESENCE OF EXEMPTIONS. THE EVALUATION DEPENDS ON THE KNOWLEDGE AND MASTERY OF THE TEACHING TOPICS AND OF THE METHODOLOGICAL INSTRUMENTS DESCRIBED IN THE COURSE.
