EXPECTED LEARNING RESULTS AND COMPETENCE: THE COURSE AIMS AT PROVIDING THE STUDENTS WITH KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS USEFUL TO BOTH (I) THE ENVIRONMENTAL CHARACTERIZATION OF DIFFERENT POLLUTED SITES AND (II) THE SUBSEQUENT PROPOSITION OF TECHNICAL SOLUTIONS FOR THE REMEDIATION. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: IDENTIFICATION OF THE LEGISLATIVE FRAMEWORK. COMPREHENSION OF: I) THE TECHNICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES ASSOCIATED TO SOIL CONTAMINATION PHENOMENA; II) THE TECHNICAL PROCEDURE FOR THE CARACHTERIZATION OF A POTENTIALLY CONTAMINATED SITE; III) THE MAIN REMEDIATION TECHNOLOGIES, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE PROCESS OPERATION AND ITS FEASIBILITY. APPLIED KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: AQUIRE ADEQUATE SKILLS TO: I) IDENTIFY A SITE SPECIFIC CHARACTERISTICS; II) DEVELOP THE CHARACTERIZATION PLAN FOR A POTENTIALLY CONTAMINANTED SITE, SO AS TO DEFINE ITS CONCEPTUAL MODEL; III) DESIGN REMEDIATION INTERVENTION ACCORDING TO THE CONTAMINATED SITE CHARCATERISTICS. MAKING JUDGEMENTS: BE ABLE TO CHOOSE THE MOST APPROPRIATE METHODS FOR THE ENVIRONMENTAL CHARACTERIZATION OF A SITE AS WELL AS THE MOST ADEQUATE TECHNIQUES TO REDUCE THE SANITARY-ENVINROMENTAL RISK ASSOCIATED TO THE CONTAMINATION. COMMUNICATION SKILLS: BE ABLE TO WORK IN GROUPS, ELABORATE AND DISCUSS THE RESULTS OF A CHARACTERIZATION PLAN, IMPROVING THE TECHNICAL LANGUAGE. LEARNING SKILLS: BE ABLE TO APPLY THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND TECHNICAL OPTIONS IN DIFFERENT CONTEXTS WITH RESPECT TO THOSE PRESENTED DURING THE COURSE. |

1. INTRODUCTION (5 HOURS): INTRODUCTION TO SOIL CONTAMINATION AND RELATED ISSUES. ENVIRONMENTAL PRINCIPLES FOR SUSTAINABILITY REMEDIATION OF CONTAMINATED SITES. 2. CHARACTERIZATION OF SOIL POLLUTANTS (5 HOURS): CLASSIFICATION OF THE MAIN CONTAMINANTS AND THEIR PROPERTIES; FUNDAMENTALS ON CHEMICAL REACTIONS; CHEMICAL-PHYSICAL MECHANISMS IN SUB-SOIL AND TRANSPORT MECHANISMS IN GROUNDWATER. 3. ITALIAN REGULATION FRAMEWORK FOR SOIL REMEDIATION (3 HOURS): TITOLO V, SEZIONE IV DEL D.LGS 152/2006. 4. ENVIRONMENTAL CHARACTERIZATION OF POTENTIALLY POLLUTED SITES ACCORDING TO THE ITALIAN REGULATION (12 HOURS): OBJECTIVES, SITE CONCEPTUAL MODEL; SAMPLING AND CHARACTERIZATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL MATRICES; PROCESSING OF RESULTS FROM ANALYTICAL DETERMINATION. 5. RISK ASSESSMENT (10 HOURS): PRINCIPLES, RISK ASSESSMENT STEPS; SITE SPECIFIC RISK ASSESSMENT IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE ITALIAN LEGISLATION; THE MAIN RISK ASSESSMENT SOFTWARES. 6. METHODS AND TECHNIQUES FOR POLLUTION ISOLATION (5 HOURS): CLASSIFICATION OF THE REMEDIATION SYSTEMS IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE ITALIAN LEGISLATION; CLASSIFICATION OF THE TECHNOLOGICAL SYSTEMS; OVERVIEW OF THE MATERIALS USED FOR THE WATERPROOFING; SUPERIFICIAL, PERIMETRAL AND BOTTOM ISOLATION TECHNIQUES. 7. REMEDIATION TECHNIQUES (20 HOURS): INTRODUCTION AND CLASSIFICATION OF REMEDIATION TECHNIQUES; SOIL VAPOUR EXTRACTION, BIOVENTING, AIR SPARGING, BIOSPARGING, BIOFLUSHING, SOILFLUSHING, THERMAL DESORPTION, PUMP AND TREAT, IN SITU OXIDATION, PHYTOREMEDIATION, COMPOSTING, LANDFARMING, MONITORED NATURAL ATTENUATION (MNA), PERMEABLE REACTIVE BARRIERS. CRITERIA FOR THE SELECTION OF THE MOST APPROPRIATE REMEDIATION TECHNOLOGY. |

THE COURSE DEVELOPS THROUGH BOTH LECTURES (48 ORE/4.8 CFU) AND EXERCISES (12 ORE/1.2 CFU). THE LATTER AIM AT PROVIDING THE SKILLS FOR I) THE ESTIMATION OF THE TRANSPORT FACTOR, II) THE RISK ANALYSIS OF POTENTIALLY CONTAMINATED SITES AND III) THE FUNDAMENTALS FOR THE DESIGN OF THE MAIN REMEDIATION SYSTEMS. TECHNICAL VISIT AT SITES CHARACTERIZED BY POSSIBLE CONTAMINATION PHENOMENA ARE ALSO SCHEDULED. THE COURSE FREQUENCY IS NOT REQUIRED TO ACCESS THE EXAM. |

THE ASSESSMENT OF THE LEARNING OBJECTIVES WILL BE CARRIED OUT BY, AT THE END OF THE COURSE, AN ORAL INTERVIEW, DURING WHICH THE STUDENT WILL BE ALSO ASKED TO DEAL WITH CASE STUDIES OF TARGET CONTAMINATION ISSUES. THE EVALUATION WILL TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE FOLLOWING EQUIVALENT CRITERIA: KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY TO SOLVE MAJOR ISSUES REQUIRING THE APPLICATION OF EXPRESSED CONCEPTS; KNOWLEDGE OF THE BASIC ASSUMPTIONS AND LOGIC OF THE DISCIPLINE; ABILITY TO EXTEND THE APPLICATION OF BASIC CONCEPTS TO SOLVE ISSUES IN NEW APPLICATIONS, PROPERTY OF LANGUAGE WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE SPECIFIC TERMINOLOGY OF THE DISCIPLINE. THE MINIMUM LEVEL IN THE EVALUATION (18/30) IS PROPOSED WHEN THE STUDENT SHOWS A FRAGMENTED KNOWLEDGE OF THE THEORICAL CONTENTS OF THE COURSE AS WELL AS A LIMITED APPLICATION CAPABILITY OF THESE THEORIC CONCEPTS TO A STUDY CONTEXT. THE MAXIMUM LEVEL (30/30) IS PROPOSED WHEN THE STUDENT SHOWS COMPREHENSIVE AND EXHAUSTIVE KNOWLEDGE OF THE METHODS AND TOOLS AND IS ABLE TO USE THEM PROPERLY IN A STUDY CONTEXT. FOR THE LAUDE, THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA WILL BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT: -USE OF PROPER TECHNICAL AND SCIENTIFIC LANGUAGE; -HIGH ABILITY OF MAKING INDIVIDUAL JUDGEMENTS; -CAPABILITY OF IDENTIFYING CORRELATION AMONG DIFFERENT TOPICS AND/OR WITH DIFFERENT DISCIPLINES. |
