Objectives
OBJECTIVE OF THIS COURSE IS TEACHING OF CHEMICAL ANALYTICAL METHODS USED IN INVESTIGATIONS TO IDENTIFY THOSE RESPONSIBLE FOR CRIMES, AND OF LEGAL ISSUES OF CHEMICAL EXPERTISE.
THE COURSE IS FOCUSED ON THE ANALYSIS OF CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES, SPECIFICALLY DRUGS ABUSE. IT PROVIDES ALL OF CONCEPTUAL INFORMATION USED IN ANY FORENSIC CHEMISTRY SECTION OF A MODERN FORENSIC LABORATORY.
GENERIC EXAMINATION TECHNIQUES ARE PRESENTED FOLLOWED BY SPECIFIC APPLICATIONS.
Prerequisites
THE MAIN PREREQUISITES TO APPROACH FORENSIC CHEMISTRY COURSE ARE THE BASIC CONCEPTS OF GENERAL, ORGANIC AND ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY.
Contents
CLASSIFICATION OF METHODS OF ANALYSIS USED IN THE INVESTIGATION OF THE SCIENTIFIC POLICE IN ANTI-DOPING CONTROLS, TO INVESTIGATE ANTI-ADULTERATION.
POTENTIAL AND LIMITS OF CHEMICAL ANALYSIS IN FORENSICS.
SAMPLING METHODOLOGIES IN FORENSIC SCIENCES: SIGNIFICANCE AND SPECIFICITY OF THE SAMPLE WITH RESPECT TO THE ENVIRONMENT. METHODS OF SAMPLE PRESERVATION.
THE FUNCTION OF THE "BLANK TEST". PROCEEDINGS FOR THE QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS OF THE FINDINGS. STRATEGIES OF ANALYSIS.
INTERPRETATION OF RESULTS: IDENTIFICATION OF THE MARGIN OF UNCERTAINTY OF ANALYTICAL RESULTS. SENSITIVITY AND DETECTION LIMIT OF THE DIFFERENT ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES ADOPTED USING FORENSICS. DETERMINATION OF THE ACCURACY OF AN ANALYTICAL METHOD.
CRITERIA FOR ASSESSING THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE RESULTS IN TERMS OF THEIR USE IN FORENSIC SCIENCE.
LEGAL ISSUES IN CHEMICAL EXPERTISE.
ANALYTICAL METHODS: APPLICATION EXAMPLES IN THE FORENSIC INVESTIGATION OF RAMAN SPECTROSCOPY, ATOMIC ABSORPTION IN THE ULTRAVIOLET, VISIBLE, NEAR-INFRARED AND MASS SPECTROMETRY;
EXAMPLES OF CHARACTERIZATION IN FORENSIC INVESTIGATIONS OF FINDINGS BY LIGHT MICROSCOPY AND SEM (SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPY); EXAMPLES OF APPLICATION IN FORENSIC INVESTIGATIONS OF DIFFERENT CHROMATOGRAPHIC SEPARATION TECHNIQUES (LC, GC, GCMS).

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE AIM OF THE COURSE IS TO GET THE STUDENT TO DEVELOP A CAPACITY FOR ANALYSIS TO HELP HIM DEAL WITH RATIONALITY AND SCIENTIFIC ISSUES RELATING TO THE LEGAL EXPERTISE IN CHEMISTRY.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
THE APPROACH OF THE COURSE REQUIRES THAT THE STUDENT DEVELOPS THE ABILITY TO PRESENT IN A CLEAR AND COMPREHENSIVE SUBJECT MATTER.
MAKING JUDGEMENTS
STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO TAKE AN CRITICAL TOWARDS THE TOPICS COVERED DURING THE COURSE AND TO DEVELOP A CAPACITY FOR INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT.
