Objectives
LEARNING OBJECTIVES: THE MAIN AIMS OF THE COURSE ARE THE SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF ORGANOMETALLIC COMPOUNDS AND THEIR USE IN CATALYTIC PROCESSES OF BOTH ACADEMIC AND INDUSTRIAL INTEREST. THE COURSE AIMS AT PROVIDING PRACTICAL-APPLICATIVE SKILLS IN THE FIELD OF METALLORGANIC SYNTHESIS AS WELL AS A THOROUGH KNOWLEDGE OF ADVANCED LABORATORY TECHNIQUES, SUCH AS THE SCHLENK TECHNIQUES. EACH EXERCISE IN THE LABORATORY WILL BE INTEGRATED WITH LECTURES IN WHICH DETAILED EXPLANATIONS OF THE SYNTHETIC PROCEDURES AND CHARACTERIZATION TECHNIQUES WILL BE PROVIDED.
ACQUIRED SKILLS: AT THE END OF THE LABORATORY COURSE, STUDENTS WILL HAVE ACQUIRED THE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS NECESSARY TO SYNTHESIZE AND MANIPULATE AIR SENSITIVE INORGANIC AND METALLORGANIC COMPOUNDS.

DEEP KNOWLEDGE OF INORGANIC AND ORGANIC CHEMISTRY.
Contents
DURING THE THEORETICAL LESSONS (16 HOURS), GENERAL TOPICS OF METALLORGANIC CHEMISTRY AND HOMOGENEOUS CATALYSIS WILL BE PRESENTED. DETAILED EXPLANATIONS OF THE SYNTHETIC PROCEDURES AND CHARACTERIZATION TECHNIQUES THAT WILL BE USED IN THE COURSE OF LABORATORY WILL BE PROVIDED. IN DETAIL, THE TOPICS CONCERN: INTRODUCTION TO SCHLENK TECHNIQUES, USE OF LABORATORY EQUIPMENT, PURIFICATION OF METALLORGANIC COMPOUNDS, PURIFICATION OF THE MOST COMMON ORGANIC SOLVENTS. FURTHERMORE, ADEQUATE EXPLANATIONS WILL BE PROVIDED ON THE SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF TRANSITION METAL COMPOUNDS AND THEIR USE FOR OLEFIN ISOMERIZATION, FOR THE POLYMERIZATION OF OLEFINS, AS WELL AS FOR METATHESIS REACTIONS.
THE COURSE ALSO INCLUDES 4 PRACTICAL EXPERIENCES IN THE LABORATORY (48 HOURS) CONCERNING:
1. SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF A NICKEL COMPOUND AND ITS USE IN THE ISOMERIZATION REACTION OF OLEFINS (12 HOURS).
2. SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF A METALLOCENE COMPOUND AND ITS USE IN THE POLYMERIZATION REACTION OF OLEFINS (12 HOURS).
3. SYNTHESIS OF A YTTRIUM COMPOUND AND ITS USE IN THE POLYMERIZATION REACTION OF CYCLIC ESTERS (12 HOURS).
4. METATHESIS POLYMERIZATION REACTIONS USING RUTHENIUM COMPOUNDS (12 HOURS).
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE INCLUDES 16 HOURS OF THEORETICAL LESSONS AND 48 HOURS OF LABORATORY LESSONS. DURING THE THEORETICAL LESSONS, ALL THE EXPLANATIONS NECESSARY TO APPROACH WITH COMPETENCE AND SAFETY LABORATORY EXERCISES WILL BE PROVIDED TO THE STUDENT. IN THE LABORATORY, THE STUDENT WILL BE INSTRUCTED TO HAVE A CORRECT APPROACH FOR THE EXECUTION OF THE PROPOSED EXERCISE.
Verification of learning
THE EXAM CONSISTS OF AN ORAL INTERVIEW LASTING ABOUT 30 MINUTES AND IT IS AIMED AT EVALUATING PRACTICAL-APPLICATIVE KNOWLEDGE IN THE FIELD OF METALLORGANIC SYNTHESIS AND ADVANCED LABORATORY TECHNIQUES. THE VOTE, EXPRESSED IN THIRTIETHS WITH POSSIBLE HONORS, WILL DEPEND ON THE MATURITY ACQUIRED BY THE STUDENT ON THE CONTENTS OF THE COURSE AND ON ITS EXHIBITION SKILLS. TO GET THE HONORS, THE SCIENTIFIC MATURITY OF THE STUDENT AS WELL AS THE QUALITY OF THE EXPOSURE AND THE AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT ACHIEVED WILL BE REWARDED.
