Objectives
LEARNING OBJECTIVES THE MAIN AIM OF THIS COURSE IS TEACHING OF CHEMICAL ANALYTICAL METHODS USED IN INVESTIGATIONS TO IDENTIFY THOSE RESPONSIBLE FOR CRIMES, AND OF LEGAL ISSUES OF CHEMICAL EXPERTISE. THE COURSE IS FOCUSED ON THE ANALYSIS OF CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES, SPECIFICALLY DRUGS ABUSE. IT PROVIDES ALL OF CONCEPTUAL INFORMATION USED IN ANY FORENSIC CHEMISTRY SECTION OF A MODERN FORENSIC LABORATORY. GENERIC EXAMINATION TECHNIQUES ARE PRESENTED FOLLOWED BY SPECIFIC APPLICATIONS. THE MAIN TOPICS OF THE COURSE ARE: METHODS OF ANALYSIS USED IN THE INVESTIGATION OF THE SCIENTIFIC POLICE IN ANTI-DOPING CONTROLS; POTENTIAL AND LIMITS OF CHEMICAL ANALYSIS IN FORENSIC CHEMISTRY; SAMPLING METHODOLOGIES IN FORENSIC SCIENCES: SIGNIFICANCE AND SPECIFICITY OF THE SAMPLE WITH RESPECT TO THE ENVIRONMENT; SENSITIVITY AND DETECTION LIMIT OF THE DIFFERENT ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES ADOPTED; DETERMINATION OF THE ACCURACY OF AN ANALYTICAL METHOD.
ACQUIRED SKILLS: AT THE END OF THE COURSE THE STUDENT WILL HAVE DEVELOPED THE ANALYTICAL SKILLS NECESSARY TO DEAL SCIENTIFICALLY AND WITH RATIONALITY THE PROBLEMS RELATED TO LEGAL EXPERTISE IN THE CHEMICAL FIELD. STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO TAKE AN CRITICAL TOWARDS THE TOPICS COVERED DURING THE COURSE AND TO DEVELOP A CAPACITY FOR INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT.
Prerequisites
DEEP KNOWLEDGE OF INORGANIC, ORGANIC AND ANALYTIC CHEMISTRY.
Contents
CLASSIFICATION OF METHODS OF ANALYSIS USED IN THE INVESTIGATION OF THE SCIENTIFIC POLICE IN ANTI-DOPING CONTROLS, TO INVESTIGATE ANTI-ADULTERATION. (6 HOUR)
POTENTIAL AND LIMITS OF CHEMICAL ANALYSIS IN FORENSICS. (4 HOUR)
SAMPLING METHODOLOGIES IN FORENSIC SCIENCES: SIGNIFICANCE AND SPECIFICITY OF THE SAMPLE WITH RESPECT TO THE ENVIRONMENT. METHODS OF SAMPLE PRESERVATION. (6 HOUR)
THE FUNCTION OF THE "BLANK TEST". PROCEEDINGS FOR THE QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS OF THE FINDINGS. STRATEGIES OF ANALYSIS. (6 HOUR)
INTERPRETATION OF RESULTS: IDENTIFICATION OF THE MARGIN OF UNCERTAINTY OF ANALYTICAL RESULTS. SENSITIVITY AND DETECTION LIMIT OF THE DIFFERENT ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES ADOPTED USING FORENSICS. DETERMINATION OF THE ACCURACY OF AN ANALYTICAL METHOD. (4 HOUR)
CRITERIA FOR ASSESSING THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE RESULTS IN TERMS OF THEIR USE IN FORENSIC SCIENCE. (4 HOUR)
LEGAL ISSUES IN CHEMICAL EXPERTISE. (2 HOUR)
ANALYTICAL METHODS AND LABORATORY:
APPLICATION EXAMPLES IN THE FORENSIC INVESTIGATION OF RAMAN SPECTROSCOPY, ATOMIC ABSORPTION IN THE ULTRAVIOLET, VISIBLE, NEAR-INFRARED AND MASS SPECTROMETRY; (8 HOUR)
CHARACTERIZATION IN FORENSIC INVESTIGATIONS OF FINDINGS BY LIGHT MICROSCOPY AND SEM (SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPY); (8 HOUR) EXAMPLES OF APPLICATION IN FORENSIC INVESTIGATIONS OF DIFFERENT CHROMATOGRAPHIC SEPARATION TECHNIQUES (LC, GC, GCMS). (8 HOUR).

Teaching Methods
THE COURSE PROVIDES 56 HOURS OF TEACHING. THE COURSE IS ORGANIZED AS FOLLOWS:
CLASSROOM LESSONS (32 HOURS) ON ALL SUBJECTS OF THE PROGRAM;
LESSONS IN THE LABORATORY (24 HOURS) WHICH INCLUDE THE USE OF THE TOOLS USED IN FORENSIC INVESTIGATIONS. IN DETAIL, SIMULATIONS OF:
ANALYSIS OF THE GUNSHOT RESIDUE WITH THE AID OF ELECTRONIC MICROSCOPY (SEM);
DRUG ANALYSIS WITH THE AID OF CHROMATOGRAPHIC AND SPECTROSCOPIC TECHNIQUES;
ANALYSIS OF TRACES OF PAINT FOUND ON PLACES WHERE ROAD ACCIDENTS OCCURRED;
ANALYSIS OF INKS USED IN DOCUMENTS THAT MUST BE AUTHENTICATED.
Verification of learning
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE IS CERTIFIED BY AN ORAL EXAM LASTING ABOUT 20 MINUTES. THE TEST CONSISTS OF AN INTERVIEW WITH QUESTIONS AND DISCUSSION ON THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL CONTENT OF THE COURSE. IT IS AIMED TO VERIFY THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING ACQUIRED BY THE STUDENT. EXPOSURE CAPACITY WITH THE USE OF APPROPRIATE TERMINOLOGY WILL BE ALSO EVALUATED.
THE VOTE, EXPRESSED IN THIRTIETHS WITH POSSIBLE HONORS, WILL DEPEND ON THE MATURITY ACQUIRED BY THE STUDENT ON THE CONTENTS OF THE COURSE AND ON ITS EXHIBITION SKILLS. TO GET THE HONORS, THE SCIENTIFIC MATURITY OF THE STUDENT AS WELL AS THE QUALITY OF THE EXPOSURE AND THE AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT ACHIEVED WILL BE REWARDED.
